Exeter To Sydney. Any Ideas?

Fri Sep 02, 2005 8:22 pm

Hello again. Some of you may remember a few months ago I started a thread asking for advice on how to get to New Zealand easily so I can play cricket out there for 5/6 months in 2006/7. That has now changed, as a club in Sydney said I could play for them. Now as I haven't been out of this country since 1988 when I was 2, I would appreciate any help and advice you can give me in my quest to get to Australia as cheaply as possible. Any sponsorship ideas would be greatly appreciated as well.

BA have a deal to SYD from LHR for £650 or thereabouts (check its website) including tax. You should be able to find a cheaper ticket, priced £500-600, via Asia on a different airline. From EXT, I suppose your best option would be to fly to CDG and go from there, but I should think that it'd be cheaper, if less convenient, to travel overland to LHR.

Cool, how about Qantas or Cathay or anyone like that? Has anyone done this kind of thing before?

Yes, many people every day.  Wink

Do a search on Expedia.co.uk, Opodo.co.uk, Unijetflights.co.uk, etc.

If you're going to play for a club in Sydney, they should be able to give you all the details for accommodation etc etc. If you are working in Australia, you will need a Working Holiday Visa from the Australian Embassy in the UK before you go. They are not so expensive and run for 2 years.

You can then work part time in Sydney to keep yourself in the money. Unemployment in Australia is very low, therefore you should have no issues finding a job.

Flight wise, you'll have to check it yourself. However, I believe Korean Airlines has really cheap flights from LHR to SYD, and their Y service is supposed to be quite alright.

A friend of mine always flies QF or BA to London and he took Korean because he was really low on cash, and didn't really want to do it. He said the food and service was exceptional and he said he'd do it again in a heartbeat. He was pleasantly surprised.

Sydney is also extremely easy to get around in, transport is extremely cheap compared to the UK, good train system, bus system... food etc and rent is also very cheap. I used to pay $120 per week for one room in a nice 2 bedroom apartment 10 minutes from the city. This is about £50 per week.

You shouldn't have any problems whatsoever. Just remember that it gets really hot in Australia. They just had the warmest Winter on record, with average temperatures in Sydney of 20c. Cricket = summer, so pack no jackets. At all. Trust me. Short sleeved shirts and jeans should get you through.

I've just heard that BA/Qantas codeshare on the London-Sydney route, is this true? Would that mean I'd hop on a BA747 from Heathrow to wherever, then a Qantas 747 from wherever to Sydney?

I also have just realised I will be out there for the next Ashes series, how much are tickets at the SCG?!

Any other ideas for sponsorship? Local press won't sponsor, but will publicise if I want...

AKL with NZ was a possibility, I was originally going to play in New Zealand, but now it's Australia. The only thing I wouldn't like about going through LAX would be the fact it takes that much longer to get to Sydney. How cheap are internal flights in AUS? BNE may well work, then could fly down to SYD afterwards.

PS I'd be happy in either a 747 or an A340. Hell, the A380 might be up and running by then!!!

Slightly off my own topic, but are there any good spots around Sydney for seeing Great White Sharks? For those of you thinking "What the hell you wanna do that for?!" I just do, I'm fascinated by Great Whites. Anyone help?

Try to get on a carrier that splits the trip up into two similarly lengthed flights. I think if you fly with BA, Qantas, Cathay, the flights are in the region of 11/ 9 hours respectively. I flew via LAX with Air New Zealand in Y 4 years ago. It was unbearable (11 hours and 14 hours). However I flew two years ago via KUL and it was great, having said that I was in Business so that does make just a tad bit of difference. lol

I would advise against Emirates unless in C Class because the second flight from Dubai to SYD or BNE is about 14 hours, and that is a real killer.

I regret to inform you EZYAirbus but Emirates only fly the A345 to SYD- sorry mate! I am also trying to get to Brisbane in April but the equipment is 777-200/300! And the Business on those planes is not worth the premium. However the 777 on Emirates in Y is pretty good, or so I have heard.

Have good flights

Regards

Paul!

Here's another question, for you Aussies out there. How many airfields are there in the Sydney area? While I'm out there, I would like to continue to do some hours building out there before I go on to my commercials.

Your best bet is Bankstown airport. It's a GA field that isn't really far from anywhere. Maybe 30 minutes drive from the city centre.
