Close Calls?

Sat Sep 03, 2005 11:29 am

What's the closest you've ever been (as a pilot or pax) in an accident?

The closest I've been in is during a CO flight from BOS to EWR. We were about to land on a nice, clear day. All of a sudden I heard the engines roar and we were lifting up again as we were already very close to the ground. I was sitting in a window seat and looked down, and saw the tail of the plane ahead of us not having cleared the runway because it got stuck behind another plane that was on the same taxiway, apparently waiting for something. We cleared that without a lot of room -- well, I guess you never clear these things with a lot of room. Way to go ATC!

My friend and I missed a tree by about 5 feet one time in a cub. It was awesome.

Was on a GQ flight into BIL. Coming down all I could see was cloud and fog. I got lucky enough to sit in 1C and was listening in on the radio. We kept decending...still coudn't see crap....then JUST before the gear touched down, I saw the runway. Heard the pilot on the rado... "oh...there it is..." That was the ONLY time I've ever been nervous at all on a flight.
This isn't where I parked my car...

Landing gear hit a tree really hard as we came down to land in Shannon. The aircraft shook violently and we hit the ground very hard. The weather was bad because of a recent hurricane depression moving over Ireland. I was very nervous.

errr........ That would be a go-around. Those are FAR from dangerous and actually fairly common for a frequent flyer.

Not mine, but my mums.
In the 70's my mum, her parents and sis were meant to get on a plane that suppose to get on from the phillipeans got blown up by a bomb. Had to go early as my aunt was ill and they wanted to get back home fast. Forgot to tell there travel agent who thought they were dead till my gran answered the phone
Where does the time go???

I almost crashed while flying a C-172 in FDO.ATC cleared me to descend below 1000 ft with clouds, heading xxx, while they cleared another ac to ascend via the same vector.I violently turned right, making a 40º angle. We missed him for about 60/70 ft. Hell scary. Then I was so pissed off that Turned around, followed that guy, landed behind him, and got in fight. Then he told me that ATC told him to, so we both went to the control Tower. They wouldnt open the doors. So we filled a complaint. And that was it.

Had an aborted take-off at ORD aboard an A340-313X of SK. After maybe 15 seconds of hurtling down the runway, captain engages thrust reversers and slams the brakes. Apparently we'd been cleared for take-off too soon, just after a 747. Pilot sounded very annoyed when he came on the PA and explained.

Cheers

Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.

On arrival into CLT last July, passing about 7,000. We had a US A319 climb out from under us left to right, by about 800ft. I can only assume that they were maintaining the visual sep. As soon as he came out from under us, he continued the climb out and we started our turn to the left. Was pretty sweet to see him pop out from under us and continue the climb.

STL-DTW in 1986.

I was flying a TW D9S to a cousin's wedding and we were delayed at the gate for an hour because of fog. They served breakfast while we waited, at least (but it was biscuits and gravy  vomit  Wink. I wished I had just gone on my own because I was going to take JetAmerica!

After we were given the okay to take off on 12L-30R, we made a turn to the northeast. Somewhere over Alton, the plane made a sudden and violent dive. I thought the masks were going to pop out from overhead, but the didn't. The rest of the flight went off without a hitch, but we were all on edge the rest of the way.

As we landed at DTW, the pilot announced that the in-flight shake-up was due to a private jet which flew in our path close enough for them to read the numbers on the side of it!  Wow!

Needless to say, I bowed down and salamed the floor of DTW. I must've been desperate because the floor of the L.C. Smith Terminal was/is  thumbsdown . Thank goodness they're building a new North Terminal!
