Best Spotting Decks/terraces Out There?

Thu Sep 08, 2005 12:29 am

Hi there,

which airport observation decks/terraces/facilities have you visited and what is your impression in terms of spotting opportunities?

Let me limit the subjects to those facilities accessible easily by foot (within the terminal or its closest surroundings, like nearest sidewalks, parkings, bus stops, etc), or by free-of-charge terminal bus/shuttle at farthest. So, please, refrain from lining up various fences, nearby parks, anything that you would need a car, bicycle or whatever other transport to reach. Just the ones you would visit if you had 2 hours transit time.

For me these come to mind:

  • FRA (T1) - excellent, no further explanation is needed here I hope. I haven't seen the T2 though  Sad, but it got to be less attractive. Takes 3 EUR to enter if I remember well.
  • WAW - the terrace is quite nice, but the amount of action could be better (well, the airport itself is not big). 0.60 USD entry, much of construction work going on currently.
  • SZZ - nice terrace, but no action (no airplanes most of the time). Open only when something arrives (+- 15 minutes).
  • HND (T1) - decent, two story terrace, JAL group only. Free of charge.
  • HND (T2) - IMHO much better than T1, here ANA group only. Free of charge.
  • ITM - really good wide terrace. Free of charge. Used to be even better, but after 9/11 they seem to have closed more "dangerous" (i.e. more interesting) areas.
  • NRT (T1) - not big, but good terrace. Free of charge.
  • NRT (T2) - two decks on opposite ends of the terminal, but not too good for photos if you ask me. Free of charge.
  • KIX - takes a dedicated bus to go to (which costs I believe about 3USD, I would walk actually, but there are no sidewalks), gives an excellent view of the terminal and approach route (if you're lucky; if not, departure). You get also live departures/arrivals information board.
  • AMS - deck is just great. Another example of an excellent facility.
  • CDG (T1) - you get cool, unobstructed view of the action from the outside circular sidewalks. Some people could yell at you though. No terraces in both CDG terminals.

Any input will be appreciated.

Best regards

The one in T2 here at MUC is quite boring. Actually, you get to see things better from inside the building.

DUS is great. They have 2 observation decks. One on the roof of the terminal and the other at the train station just on the threshold of RWY 23L.

Both are open daily and cost 2 Euros for both and all-day. The train station observation deck is easily accessible via the SkyTrain from the terminal and is free of charge. I used to go there every weekend myself.

I've only been to the one at SYD and I think it's quite nice. Although you do need about 300mm of a telephoto lens.

Here is a shot taken from the spotting terrace in the QF international terminal:

the Japanese airports are just about some of the best out there, purpose built parks, decks, toilet areas, the lot! unbeatable to be honest.

Let's not forget lowly IAH. Of IAH's 5 terminals, 3 have parking garages that have rooftop parking, which offer spectuclar views. In addition to those 3 areas are the A/B parking facility situated in between A and B as well as a new facility next to terminal C. Below are some samples.

Actually, the question was about airport observation decks, and I don't believe that St. Maarten has any observation deck at all!

These are my favorites:

1 - BUD (cheap entry and low "fence")
2 - AMS (FREE entry (up to now) but sun could be in a wrong position)
3 - MAN (excellent viewing area with Concorde)
4 - FRA (great deck, but too large: you will miss something)
5 - ZRH (excellent decks, both at the "old" and "new" terminals)
don't throw away tomorrow !

From my experiences, the viewing deck at DUS is the best,

My favourite spotting decks has to be

AMS = fantastic , very big observation area.

DUS = Very close to the taxiway , even better if they used runway 23.

NRT = There may be fence covered but there are holes for you to stick your camera through. T1 observation deck is my favourite.
Airliners is the wings of my life.
