Has Anyone Ever Paid More For Flight Because.....

Tue Sep 13, 2005 6:04 am

Has anyone ever paid more for flight because of the aircraft used for the trip. For example lets say trip A cost 200.00 round trip on a 737 and trip B cost 300.00 round trip but on a 757( or bigger ) I would pay the extra money. Am I the only one that feels this way

I would maybe pay £200 for a 737 flight and maybe £250 for a 747/346 trip!

Otherwise I would usualy pay the cheapest, unless it's a MD-11/741/747SP/DC-10/TU-144/Concorde/TU-154/IL-86.....

If it's biz travel I'd imagine you'll get some people who say yes. I wouldn't pay more for a 757 over a 737. A 767 over a 737 is a different story though.

I wouldn't do it if it was for a 737-757 option and not for $100 difference in price. I have paid slightly more (about $10) and went out of my way to fly in a DL MD-88 and 767-400 (both the same day) because I had never flown in these airplanes before.

I have paid more to ride on United Airlines (mileage points) & would probably pay extra money to ride on the 777, only because of the comfort level...

Not for aircraft size, but for different level of comfort/service. For instance, I would be prepared to pay a little more to fly on a mainline jet than on a CRJ (especially for European Business Class flights);or for flying UA 777 rather than their 767 if I was flying F class; or BA 777/744 vs. 767 in C or F.

Otherwise: no

I fly what I think is a lot of miles (120k miles last year) and I have never paid to fly on a certain type of aircraft. I will choose a regular Boeing or Airbus commerical aircraft over a regional jet if there's a choice, though. I hate RJs because they're so uncomfortable.

I usually will price United first because I am a 1K member and want to keep my status. Second factor would be price which is why I tend to fly Southwest more for short domestic trips.

I might consider paying more to fly on an A380 or 787 in the future because both will provide a unique flying experience compared to todays aircraft.

I have. I paid more one time on a IAH-DCA route to go via EWR for 1.) the miles, and 2.) to fly on CO762 and CO777. The flight was actually a rerouting from IAH-ORD to see my ex-gf. Things went to s&$t before the trip so I changed the ticket to go to DC to visit friends--after the cost to change and all I was like f-- it. The original routing was IAH-EWR-MDW for the same reasons--but the ticket was actually the same as N/S IAH-ORD.

I had the opportunity to pay a little more for a slightly more exotic routing this spring when I was booking flights to Japan for me and my class mates. The travel agent offered CPH-LHR-HKG-TPE-NGO (SK, CX, China Airlines) on the outbound leg and NGO-NRT-ORD-CPH (NH, UA, SK and as a UAMP member, I would have gotten killer miles!) on the return leg. It would have cost about €150 more, and I just couldn't do that to my friends... Had I been traveling on my own I would have taken it!

Cheers

...I once paid extra in order to fly Lan's A320 and not Aerocontinente's ancient 727, which was worth it.

On the other hand I once flew Aerocontinente UIO-LIM because it was cheap...it made me realise that we should cherish our live and that is sometimes worth paying more just to feel at ease.

I've flown close to 75K miles this year..and basically I don't mind flying most aircrafts, as long as it's not an RJ plane!!

Of course, flying on AA's 777's a few weeks ago though was the best... biggrin

I chose a slightly more expensive flight ($25 more, DL/Song over WN, CO) for my upcoming LAS-MCO trip, one of the reasons being it was on 757/767 vs 737s. And I even got picky with the DL flights, making sure not to pick ones with RJs. The other reasons were that work was paying for the trip and that since I'm traveling Thanksgiving weekend, I wanted a non-stop red-eye flight to MCO since it *should* be less crowded, both at check-in and on the plane. At the time of booking, the MCO-ATL leg on the way back was scheduled to be a 772, but it got changed to 763 a few days after booking.  Sad oh well...

Many times I've paid a higher fare to fly my preferred carrier(s). Even had a stop over on occasion. The end result of course is plain to see - I'm on my preferred carrier(s), I'm likely upgraded, I am building FF points, I'm familiar with the carrier(s) and what is offered and where to go to get it, etc.

I've also paid a higher fare (and lower fare) to fly international on a carrier that I'd never flown before - just to  checkmark  the block so I could say I flew ABC Airlines once.

I've done that before. I payed more to fly DL just to get on the 764.
Also, sometimes when flying US, i pay more for a ticket to get a different plane. Once there was a fare for $160, it was on a 733, and 734. I payed $185 for the same route, but i got to be on a 757.  Smile

thumbsup  I prefer BA service on the 747 in both J & F over the comparable offerings on the 777. The seat is the same but the cabins on the 747 lend themselves to a much better service; No galley at front of 747 F cabin and small Club World cabins upstairs and on main deck on 747 as opposed to flying youth hostel of the 777 in J. As this affects my choice on solely BA flights there is no price difference although I would pay a premium for upper deck J versus youth hostel J on 777. In the past I have taken later flights to avoid the 777 on the IAD route.

I paid about $100 extra on NW to avoid Airbus aircraft when travelling TRI-MEM-DTW-LGW and return.

Yeap, I paid extra to take the ATr72-500 over the small jetstream 32. Worth it too, the ATR is an amazing aircraft.

It was not too much difference, would pay extra if that was the case.

Yep, just this summer I paid $10 extra to go DEN-SFO-SAN-DEN just to get on the 747-400 DEN-SFO. UA was cheapest for a direct flight, but I wanted to connect and when i saw the 744, i couldnt pass that up. F9 was also about $100 more RT and it had an A318 and id rather fly a 744 and give my money to a legacy.

I often paid slightly more for flying on

- a specific aircraft type that I hadn't been on before
- a specific airline
- via a specific airport
- or any combination of the above

However, usually I try to get the cheapest deal. And of course, collecting FF miles always is tempting to take at least one alliance, if not a specific airline. Also, it might sound trivial, but usually I prefer a mainstream airline over a no-frills airline now, if it is an early morning flight. I don't like eating that early at home, and once I am on the flight I am starving. Of course, you can bring your own food, but I am getting lazy, hehe... Even the domestic flights in North America at least offer food for purchase, and my experience is that it is good food for a fair price.

I would go out my way (within reason) to travel on a BA 744 vs a BA 777 as well if flying J. The J cabin on the T7 is one big cabin and is like a youth hostel, whereas on the 744 it is 2 or 3 small cabins that feel exclusive and relaxing.

Not sure I agree with FBGD on F, though - for night flights, the 744 is good, but on day flights, I find teh T7 F cabin to be cavernous and very pleasant, whereas the curvature of the nosecone feels claustrophobic.

For claustrophobic read privacy  Wink Although the aisle is very narrow on the 747 at 3A/4E. I think on the whole the F cabin on 747 lends itself better to First, the cabin is much quieter than the non-QC2'd 777 and I find the lack of galley at the front preferable.

Having said that, your preference of the 777 in F is understandable, not sure why anyone in their sane mind would take the 777 in BA J over 747 upper deck though!

Absolutely! It is a completely different feel on the upper deck 744 versus the main deck of the 772.

As for me, I paid about $200 more to fly to HKG on an RB211 747-400 as opposed to a PW4056 747-400. Well, that wasn't the only reason though. CX was direct and I wanted to try them out anyway.

I would not pay more for any aircraft I've already flown, or is especially common - i.e. 737 for a 757/767.

I would however pay more for a new type to me, let's say an A340-600 over a 747, or DC9/727 over an A320. Aircraft that are increasingly rare imo are worth changing for, as are for instance a 747 on a really short segment!

I just did that. I had plans to go to MSP this weekend flying nonstop from BDL. When I changed my ticket for next month I chose a flight with a DC-9 and a Canadair RJ CR4 with a stop in IND. On NW if you couldn't guess.

Why? I like DC-9s, I have never flown in an RJ, and have never been to IND.

My flight back right now is nonstop on a rather vanilla Airbus. I may change that flight to.

I can do this because I did not pay for the original ticket.  bigthumbsup

When I spoke to the operator at NW to find me a flight like that I asked her if she got requests like this often. Her reply was very diplomatic, "We have all types of people call us sir." (Crazy is what I think she may have ment to say!)

Yep. When I went to Stockholm for Easter this year, I paid extra to catch the BA flights from LHR that were served by a B767 rather than the Airbii that they also use on that route. And that wasn't because I prefer B over A, it's just that it had been a long time since I'd been on a B767 (last time was HNL-SFO on QF back in '92).

I would definitely pay more for any flight on a 747.

However, when I booked my upcoming flight to JFK, all of the direct flights from my home airport of SDF were on DL CRJs and ERJs. It was actually cheaper for me to connect at FLL and go on a Song 757 from there. It will be my first flight on the 757 and I sooooo can't wait!

I have done that a few times....

When I was flying to London last October I chose BA over NW because of the aircraft, 777. But about a month before departure the aircraft was changed to a 767.

I have changed flight times and paid more to fly on DL 763 instead of a MD-88 or 757.

I try to avoid the DC-9 on NW as much as possible because I have flown it many times and I want to try others like the A319 which I did recently...I could of had a non-stop flight on a NW 757 but chose to have a connecting flight out of BNA so I could fly on a A319. RSW-BNA A319 BNA DTW DC-9

In July I payed about 25 bucks more to fly from AUS-MSP via both DFW and ORD. AA 66 is a triple between DFW-ORD, and I'll gladly choose 2 MD-80s and a triple over just two MD-80s or one MD-80 and a CRJ. Did this round trip (the reservations agent was bewildered until I explained whats going on) and I upgraded on the way back. Man do I love the F class product on AA.

People used to regularly pay more just for this aircraft, in some cases, rather a lot more! But then I suppose Mach 2 was worth it.
