How To Pass 20 Hours At Madrid Airport?

Sun Sep 25, 2005 12:25 am

Hello fellow a.netters,

I saw a post here about somebody asking how to pass 6 hours at LHR.

So here is my version:
I will be arriving in the late evening (after 11 PM) with IB from LPA and departing the next day at 5:20 PM to PMI. That's a lot of time..

What would you recommend? I never been to MAD, but as I heard it's a great airport...

I checked their website, but to be honest I find it quite confusing and I don't gave me so much info...

I planned to sleep at the Airport... Maybe better doing that in the transit airside area than in the public departure hall?
What about cheap food (McDonald's or whatever) offering a great view the next day? Is there a spotting platform? Or any not too expensive airport hotel with great views?

Better stay on airside or landside for the whole day? is it possible to enter and exit air- and landside as much as I want as long I have a boarding pass?
Anyone knows starting from what time one can get an AB-boarding pass in MAD or is there any self-check-in? (no lugguage for me).

I also tought of flying a domestic flight to wherever and back, but I don't think it would be worth the money, as it would cost a minimum of 50 € I suppose...

Maybe for you some of those quetions may sound odd... But I've never been there and I'll hoping to make the best of my time... Any tips would be highly appreciated!

I was a very frequent visitor and traveller in and out of MAD in the past year.

First I will go with food, there is no McDonalds or Burger King in the airport, there are little cafes which offer sandwhics for about 2 euros, there is also some buffet places.

This place:

Is actully a seating area which belongs to a cafeteria, which has sandwhiches and a buffet.

You can get some great spotting views from Concourse A of the tarmac as well as the international planes, if you walk down to Concourse D you can get some good views of aircraft taxiing for take-off or taxiing back from landing.

I would suggest flying to BCN if you where to fly some where, with Vueling, Air Europa, Spanair, and Iberia flying the route you are bound to find a cheap fare.

The longest that I have been at MAD for was 6 hours when my Air Europa flight to RAK was delayed, but the hours passed by fast while I was at Concourse A taking photos of the tarmac and long-haul aircraft!

I hope you have an awsome time at MAD!

MADtoCAE, thanks for the link, it's very helpful!

AlitaliaMD11, thank you for your relply as well. I'm surprised that there is no Burgerfood at an airport like MAD! But 2 Euro sounds a fair price for a sandwich... This is what I pay in Germany too, even if I'm not at the airport.

Walking along the concourses would be that I need to be on the airside of the airport right?
