Sun Sep 25, 2005 10:05 pm

Hi All,
i would like to start this topic because I would like to ask what is your favourite airport to fly in Central and Eastern Europe. The countries I am talking about are Czech Republic and east of it.

Personally, for it is is Prague and Ostrava (OSR).

Thanks for sharing..

I used to like Prague but that was when it was undiscovered and bedore BMIbaby and Easyjet and all the no-frills jumped in.

I like Belgrade. Much undiscovered by many and only available from the UK with frills, on BA or JAT.

Poznan - Lawica (POZ). It's small but has beautiful new terminal and offers very high quality.

I flew into Pisner in Czech Republic on a Let 410 of Air Skoda (yep that's was the airlines name - no pun intended). Obviously a Czech airforce base as lots of Migs sitting in hard bunkers.

A tractor met us and coupled up the aircraft and set off at least 75kph which was a hoot.

Went through the VIP channel and only a short coach ride away from the world famous brewery. Stunning scenery AND a tour of the brewery - a great day had by one and all  Smile

My other favorite airport was Riga. A brandnew terminal building, everything looks nice and is quite quick and efficient.

My favorite is Bratislava, very short ways. The terminal is not a beauty but everything is very quick and efficient.

Tallinn is very nice but you get the feeling in another few years it won't be able to cope with the increased demand.

As for the worst well it has to be the Etiuda terminal at Warsaw. Hell on earth.

Yes, RIX is very nice. VNO is ok. LJU is small but nice. WAW is hell, but should be very nice when the new terminal opens. Perhaps the worst I've seen is VSG.

I kinda like WAW ---

but I'd give my vote for MSQ.

Impressive soviet terminal now mostly deserted. An annual capacity of 5.8M passengers and an annual throughput of less than 500K.

So long as you aren't intimidated by the entry guards, quite a plesant experience!

Anyone remember Budapest Ferihegy Terminal 1? Perfect for any "iron curtain" nostaligists....a real good example of socialist architecture from the 1960s.

I think its only used now for freight operations.

I would also wanna try to fly to some smaller airport in Romania, such as Cluj, Sibiu and Timisoara.

T1 at BUD is supposed to be the LCC-terminal now (but was a cargo terminal in recent years).

KTW has a very modern airport while KRK´s spectators terrace offer good views of the apron - but movements at both airports are a little bit limited.

Oh yes. when I first went to work in Hungary in the early/mid 90s I used to fly in and out of T1. As you say, a marvellous example of socialist architecture, inside and out. Really felt like you were still in the Eastern Bloc.

My understanding too was that it would become the LCC terminal.

For me, the best is LHBP / BUD.  Smile But for spotting, I think PRG is the best one!

Nice to hear something nice about Belgrade.

Unfortunately, Belgrade is still a mess. International terminal is still under construction. Anyway, the city should be discovered by Western tourists and their number is growing every year.

Budapest is nice.

I think that Ferihegy 1 was opened this month.

OTP definitely because of the 100 plus flights I have had to and from that airport, perhaps two were delayed ! Also the luggages arrive very quickly and one doesn't need to walk miles from the plane to the luggage belts area.

They have extension plans and are about to finish works on the second runway taxiing lane. I think this is a future potential hub between Europe and ME.

The extension is already planned and additional 9 gates together with extended terminal building and a new pier should be operational by fall 2007 (or was it 2008).

Quite liked DBV. You can get a nice approach over the old city and with the mountains on one side a visual approach from the north round onto Rwy 30 can be fun.

what about DME? I think this is the nicest and most modern airport in Eastern Europe. At least it's the most western in the east, if you know what I mean.

Another one came to my mind: TIV

Back in the early 1980´s it was quite a bit of a thrill to make a 180-degree turn within the Bay of Kotor in order to align with the runway. My logs show that it was a DC-9 of Inex Adria Airways. When we arrived at the airport for our return flight early morning, the airport was still locked. Some custodian had to open the building for us; the DC-9 flew in a bit later on a positioning flight (from DBV, IIRC).

So this one is in the category "favourite for experience" ...

Been to the following:

SVO, RIX, WAW, SXF, PRG, BUD and would rate as follows:

1 - RIX (nice and small so very convenient)
2 - PRG (messy arrivals area, but enjoyed departures and friendly staff)
don't throw away tomorrow !
