Advice Needed In Planning Flights

Wed Sep 28, 2005 7:01 am

This summer, I'm planning on going to Iowa for a few weeks to visit friends. I will fly from ARN to DSM with connections at AMS and MSP on the way to DSM and MSP and AMS or DTW and AMS on the way back. Now I have some questions  Smile

1.
How much time do I need at MSP for immigration and do I have to claim my luggage and check it in again for my flight to DSM? How much time will I need all together?

I have 3 options:

1. 3 hours at MSP
2. 3 hours and 50 minutes at MSP
3. 6 hours at MSP

My transfer time at AMS is 1 hour and 30 minutes. Will that be enough?

2.
Transfer through MSP or DTW on the return leg?
Since I'm transfering at MSP on the way to DSM, it would be nice to see another airport. I have 4 options:

1. 2 hours at MSP and 50 min at AMS
2. 1 hour and 20 min at DTW and 1 hour and 55 min at AMS
3. 2 hours and 10 min at DTW and 1 hour and 5 min at AMS
4. 1 hour at DTW and 2 hours and 50 min at AMS

Will I have to claim and check my luggage in again at DTW and MSP?

Which of these options would be the best choice?

Also, what aircraft does NW use on AMS-MSP and AMS-DTW? I recall it being the DC-10 on AMS-MSP-AMS and the A330 on AMS-DTW-AMS. Am I correct?

Sorry if these are stupid questions but I'm not a frequent long-haul traveller and I have never been to MSP or DTW before.

3 hours should be OK.....or you can go with 3:50....it's up to you
What you'll do after you go throguh pasport, is you'll grab your bags and "IF" they have been checked through DSM you'll drop them off at a place that says "CONNECTING LUGGAGE" or similar after custom.....IF NOT then you'll grab your bags head through customs and then go to you airline counter and check in as a regular domestic flight

3 hours should be enough if there are no delays

Should be as long as you are checked all the way to the US, and do not need to grab luggage or anything since you won't need to go throguh immigration in Europe

All the option seem ok, although 50 minutes in AMS might be a lil bit short....might as well take the safer one with about 1-2 hours....Haven't been to either airport so I wouldn't know but less than an hour in any US airport is close

No...as long as you are checked in all the way to Europe....just get off the plane at DTW/MSP and hed to the other gate
ROLL TIDE!!!
