Your First Intercontinental Flight?

Wed Oct 05, 2005 8:10 am

My first intercontinental flight was back in 1978, when my family flew from Helsinki, Finland to Vancouver, Canada. It was a Finnair's non stop charter flight on DC-8, it took about 10h if I remember right.

I flew a lot prior to 2002, but never intercontinental. First such flight was CO EWR-GLA, September of 2002 on a 757-200 in BusinessFirst.

I hope Alitalia survives.

My first intercontinental flight was in July 1988 when I went with my high school German class to Germany for the summer. We flew an LTU L-1011 from LAX to Duesseldorf.

"My" first intercontinental flight was somewhere in early 1982, when my EXPECTING mom made a flight to NYC (not that I remember it though. It's the only flight she made during her pragnancy). Big grin
Does that count? No?

Well, presumably my first intercontinental flight was in 1986 (I was four) FRA-JFK. In 1990 I took that flight alone for the first time.  worried  Everything went well.

October 1983. JFK-LGW, on a charter airline (Global International Airlines I think) 707 (ex-AA). Terrible flight, fully booked, window seat, seat pitch for midgets, poor food, can't recall of any IFE, didn't sleep at all.
Return flight was much better. Charter space on a TWA 747 LHR-JFK. Not full, much better seat pitch, food & IFE ok, a much better experience than flight over.

1974 with Icelantic/Loftleidir. Luxemburg-Reykjavik-Washington (or NYC?) on B-707. It was the cheapest trans atlantic flight in those days (I am not anymore sure if it was to Washington or New York, was a very young teen and not yet into aviation).

June 1991, I was 2 and a half. DFW-LGW. AA DC-10-30. The only thing I remember is sitting on the left side of the plane (in a window of course) and being thirsty because I ate fritos. Its funny the stuff you remember.
Cheers,

FRA - BLA (Barcelona/Venezuela) in 1991
On the scheduled return BLA - SDQ - MUC - FRA the a/c went tech on the leg to SDQ and became AOG @ SDQ for 20 hours. A temp sensor for one engine had to be flown in from the U.S. before we could continue our flight. We (370 pax) got accomodated for one night in a number of hastily rented hotels in the area of Boca Chica (of course w/o our luggage). Once the flight resumed, the planned stop at MUC was omitted (favourable for me).

to date: 50 sectors flown intercontinental

IBERIA 6400/6401 MEX-MAD-MEX
I remember that the airplane left really late (about two hours late), Confused no apologies, hissyfit  service sucked and the aircraft was OLD... and in a bad shape... But I was happy because I love flying (I was 4teen... silly  )

MEX-SDQ-MAD and return, on an IB DC-8 in 1969 (or so I was told, I was only 3 at the time).

The first intercontinental flight that i remember is that same flight, only in 1973.

LGW-BOS
Northwest Orient B747

I thought that flight would never end as I had never flown for longer than about 2 hours before, but I loved being able to watch movies and listen to music in flight, even if it was on those crappy old fashioned headsets! Thinking of that flight always makes me think of a song called 'Man Size Love' by a band called Klymaxx - I think I must have heard it at least 5 times on that flight!

If it can be considered as intercontinental, mine was BCN-TFS on a charter A320 back in 1998 I think.
