CO, UA, AA, Or DL To South America?

Fri Oct 14, 2005 2:43 pm

I'm looking to book a summer trip to Brazil and Argentina next June, and I have a few choices for two of us.

The choices:
$1280.70
UA:
PDX-IAD A319
IAD-GRU 763
GRU-GIG MD 11 (on Varig) Arrive: 840 am
or, for $30 cheaper:
PDX-ORD 752
ORD-GRU 763
GRU-GIG 763 Arrive: 1145 am

Return:
EZE-IAD 763
IAD-DEN 777
DEN-PDX A320

DL:
$1250.70
PDX-ATL 763
ATL-GIG 763ER Arrive: 710 am
EZE-ATL 763ER
ATL-PDX 752

CO:
$1,129.20 (not including EZE-GIG transfer!)
PDX-IAH 739
IAH-GIG 764 Arrive: 1055 am
GIG-IAH 764
IAH-PDX 738

AA:
$1154.00
PDX-ORD MD80
ORD-JFK MD80
JFK-GRU 777
GRU-GIG 777 (continuation) Arrive: 1126 am
EZE-DFW 763
DFW-PDX MD80

Which choice looks to be the best? I'm tempted to fly CO because of the 764 and the good service and IFE. UA is also tempting with the chance to fly an MD11. They have IFE, but how good is it on the 763? AA's 777 are really nice, but the 767 lacks IFE and isn't nearly as nice as the 777 or 764. DL looks to be the looser with the lack of IFE and the usual 763.

Also, how much would the EZE-GIG flight be? Where should I look? Expedia returned about $370 for one way, which makes CO a bit pricey.

Thanks,

Also, when does a visa need to be purchased to visit Brazil? Prior to ticket booking?

Why not LA or JJ? They are far ahead in service, than the ones exposed.

I think both JJ and LA were both way more pricey (upwards of $200 more than the other choices).

If it's next June, bear in mind that by then CO will have started its IAH-EZE nonstop service. CO service to EZE is all but a foregone conclusion...DOT approval is tentatively granted, allowing for objections from competing carriers (DL...not gonna happen, as DL is in BK and proposing a JFK-EZE route already served by other carriers and IAH-EZE is a new route). Once this new CO route is launched, expect a fare sale which should reduce prices to EZE on all carriers flying there. CO will be serving the route with a 767-200, which has the wicked mini-cabin from rows 16-18 in Y. If you snag a seat in row 16, bulkhead cutouts allow for extra legroom, and the intimacy of service in that mini-cabin makes it feel like a premium economy experience. If I were you, I would wait until the CO route is formally announced (probably NOV or DEC) and book at the corresponding new route fare sale prices.

Well I have flown AA to South America before and found them to be good and bad. Flew MIA-GIG on 777 which was excellent, good IFE, good service, good all round. But then flew LPB-MIA-JFK on 757 and A300. 757 was alright, service was fine but IFE was not the best and flight was also delayed by 2 hours which meant we missed our JFK connection and were told we would have to wait til the following day for a flight, not impressed! The A300 was ok though but no IFE but it was pretty comportable.

As for EZE-GIG. I flew it with Varig on 737 and it was ok, nothing special, no IFE and not particularly comportable seats, think it was about $250. Also flew GRU-EZE with BA which could be an option for you. You get to fly a 744 with excellent IFE, food and very friendly crew. Not sure of price though, I had a RTW ticket! Hope this helps

I would wait for CO to get final approval from the DOT and then just book PDX-IAH-EZE. It shouldn't be more than two weeks or so before you can purchase your ticket.

It will be the easiest routing (everyone else has a double connection), and IAH is along the direct route. Why would you want to bother flying AA to JFK just so you can go south?

WhiskeyHotel, a direct IAH-EZE flight would probably seal the deal for CO. The only problem is that I'm not sure if I want to wait that long in hope that the route is announced.

It's not hope - it's a fact. However, until the DOT issues the final certificate, CO isn't allowed to sell any tickets as technically, they don't have the route authority yet. Wait it out - you'll be kicking yourself when you're on your second connection, sick of traveling, and you could have made one easy stop in IAH instead.

Yep...final approval is just a short matter of time now. Wait two weeks or so like Cory said and book CO. Their fare sales on new routes are generally pretty spiffy ($888 EWR-PEK comes to mind)

Book UA, minus the 757 and Airbus, you will get PTV on every flight, including the 767, whose PTV is the same as the 777, with about 10 channels or so, about 5-6 movies on a cycle and the others TV programming. Also their service isn't any better or worse than the others and their meals are quite nice.

IFE isn't the cutthroat for flying to S. America. Just did a DFW-SCL-DFW on AA 763 and it was wonderful. Have also take their 772 product to GIG. I'd recommend AA. Let us know what you decide to book.

Had a CO 757 EWR-LIM and a couple of CO 767s GIG-GRU-EWR - absolutely fine, good food friendly service, reasonable IFE (there were a few problems with the IFE, admittedly).

I guess AA, just because they offer more flights to Brazil and Angertina.
But from IAD maybe you can choose UA.

Just my opinion, but for me, all the major american carriers are the same.
Why not LAN?

PDX,

I would definetly choose AA because their 777 is really good and has PTV plus I have always flown them and they have a good service

With respect to the Visa...check out this website http://www.brasilemb.org/consulado/consular1.shtml or you can shoot an email to the follwoing address and they'll prolly explain what you need to do consular@brasilemb.org your nearest consulate is in SFO

I'd pick DL or CO simply because you'd only have to change planes once each way, as opposed to the double stops with AA or UA.

CO and DL seem to provide better connections from PDX to Latin America.

Well the CO flight to EZE has been loaded into the reservation system and it's now the cheapest option! I'll be talking to my sister and then hopefully booking this weekend on CO!
