Business Class On LH/TG/UA

I was wondering what people thought of the business class product on the following airlines (long haul)
All on their 747 or perhaps LH’s 346.

I am planning on taking a round world trip on these and notice none have flat beds (yet)

Does anyone know when (or if) these will be introduced?

Also what are the following like:
-seat/ comfort
-overall service

Anyone with experience would be good? – thanks so much in advance  Smile

Both LH and TG have flat beds and have for a while... and the ones on the thai A346 look rather nice... they've got big banners drapped down poles all over Melbourne Airport pushing it big time.

Dunno about UA and LH was along time ago (and I sworn I would not fly them again and never have since) but recently I had a stint at TG in J :

Very nice indeed, BKK lounge even had a massage parlor  Smile
-seat/ comfort
On par with other Biz class, all electric and plenty of space.
Amenity kit is roughly what you get on most carriers, no razor of course Sad
Mmmmmmm ! Thai food is among the best in the world and very well presented too, nice cutlery and nice tablecloths with the Thai logo embroidered (on my desk as I write this  Smile )
-overall service
Excellent, F/A's caring and genuinely interested in your well-being.
Non-functional on the a/c I has (333) so no comment there.

Used LH recently enough, long haul and European.

Dont think they had full flat beds in business, certainly my 747 aircraft did not, and in one case my seat would not recline at all. Have to say it really annoyed the hell out of the F/A's that the seat was faulty, whereas if it were on EI they would probably just shrug, - and three months hence you would possibly see it still unrepaired.

Nothing special.

OK, not up to standards of far eastern carriers in terms of presentation, but enough of it.

Staff on board
Professional, did not vanish either after meal service.
Dont fuss over you but you hardly expected that, did you?
Probably would be very good in a crisis.

Uninspired, and at FRA, hot, busy and crowded, but staff very pleasant indeed. Not as good as BA lounges. Not suprisingly, a great deal of the reading material is in German (on planes too), so if you do not have an airside view, bring a book.

Amenity Kit
Just another useless thing to find a home for.

Rating overall - below MH, SQ, CX, EK, above KL, around perhaps below BA, AF in business class.

I didnt think LH has flat beds on most 747s even yet? Id imagine on the 346's mainly.... And I didnt think any TG aircraft had flat beds, but I may be wrong? do all aircraft have them? The seat maps look the same as 5 years ago when they had normal lounge style chairs

When i mean flat bed, I mean like BA's or QF's new ones... I know UA doesnt I dont think... or will they be introducing them?

LH - PrivateBed on 333/346/some 343/some 744

Never tried the LH bed, but I hate the slippery slope seats with passion. LH 776/777 SIN-FRA 744 at least has this new seat if you're connecting from Oz. Also BKK-MUC has it.

Old seat is nothing great, but not too bad. Tight pitch, go for aisle seat. IFE is very basic, service is a hit or miss, food is usually good on longhaul. Amenity kit can be described as a trash bag - it even looks like one. LH Business Class lounges are a disgrace, always crowded and no food whatsoever. Except shower waitlist to be about 27 people in the morning.

TG - New Royal Silk flat bed on '7443' config, flying BKK-FRA-BKK on TG 920/1/2/3. A340-500 (MXP, JFK) and A340-600 (MEL, AKL, ZRH, NRT) have these seats as well.

'7442' has older seats like LH old C. Acceptable. Mainly flying to LHR, CDG, MUC, SYD.

'7441' and '7431' have ancient and very uncomfortable seats with no IFE or any other gadgets. Pitch is a joke at 40-42". These can be found on secondary routes such as FCO/MAD, KIX/LAX, ATH, PEK and unfortunately on a number of Australian services.

BKK-ARN/CPH operate with this config, your RTW D-class ticket would get you a Royal First Class seat however (either old 18-seat, 60" pitch, 160" recline or newer 14-seat flat bed with PTV). I'd recommend this as the most comfortable C out of your options. Service is also F without caviar or Dom.

TG lounges are very nice, especially the one near pier 3 at BKK. Amenity kit is quite nice as well in my opinion, miles better than LH. Food and service on TG is top notch. 7443 has a nice AVOD IFE, 7442 has a basic PTV, 7441 has 1970s mainscreen in all cabins.

UA - Perhaps the best "old" business class seat out there in my opinion. Lots of pitch on the upper deck of 744s as well. Service can be great (NRT based crews mostly) to downright terrible. Basic PTV such as old LH/TG. Food was ok but not any culinary treat really. UA lounges stink in my opinion, NRT RCC is a nice lounge though, but even that lacks food.

In case you get an a/c with the private bed on LH (all facing forward, supposed to be 2 m long), you also will have a new IFE with AVOD, games, Internet access ("SkyNet").
I didn´t use all of it last week flying MUC - LAX on a A343, but quite a number of C-pax were sleeping through good portions of that daylight flight (I prefer not to sleep on those flights). To my taste, FA´s lacked a little bit of attention; other carriers refill your glass of water and champagne faster and more often than LH did on THAT flight. OTOH food was very good.
Compared to KL last year, KL´s staff showed a bit more attention (based on a limited number of experiences).

Lounge at MUC: Had too little connecting time to use it.
Amenity kit: Contained a tiny case of Nivea cream (a moisturing cream) plus the usual stuff in a bag.

In case I get new experiences on my return flight (on a B744 to FRA), I´ll post it here.

So basically my best options so far are

TG Syd-BKK on 7442 (average seat) (I cant get over they have bus class long haul with a 42’ pitch still on 7441!!!)

Then I have to take LH… so LH BKK to MUC to LHR (A346, hopefully flatbeds)

Then LH to SFO or YYZ via FRA (744 average bus seats)

And then UA std bus seats back to Sydney.

It’s a very good fare Ive found so I cant really complain about lack fo flat beds – coz if it was a full business clas Star Alliance or One world fare, itd be a good 50% more – and no guarantee of flat beds except on SQ sectors on Star, and on QF and BA on One world which is almost double the price!

So are all TG flights out of Sydney the 7442? I don’t want to be on a 7441!!!

Anyone have any further info  Smile
