UA Or NW Domestic US Mainland - Hawaii

Mon Oct 24, 2005 4:07 am

I have two choices to reach Maui in November.
United B777 from O´Hare or a Northwest B757 from Seattle.

I have never flown these domesticroutes before...so I appreciate any comments reg comfort, inflight concept etc.

1,000,000,000% UA. NW does not have any IFE, so you will be board stiff. Plus, on UA, you will have Channel 9.

six reasons for me to choose United:
- UA has IFE, NW hasn't!
- UA offers a good economy plus product, wich I really like!
- UA has Channel 9!
- You're flying a 777! (wich I prefer)
- UA seats are more comfortable
- If you have to transfer in SEA of ORD: I've better transfer experience with UA than with NW.
(But that last one may not be a reason)
Enjoy Hawaii! I've been there once and really enjoyed it! (I love the USA)
Next flight: AMS - TLV - AMS

Neither . . . . use HA.

That said, given only the choice between UA and NW, go UA. No competition there . . . a 777 vice a 757? UA vice NW?

It's NO competition between UA or NW . . . . like driving a Caddy or a Yugo, your call.

If you've never flown a 777, you're in for a treat. While I love the 757 (sleek little hot rod), I always go wide-body whenever possible.

United's domestic service is quite good - free entertainment & headphones on all flights, BOB actually has quite a bit of food for $5, and as stated, channel 9 is available.

Have a great trip!

I think NW has IFE to Hawaii

E+ is worthless if you aren't a Star Alliance Elite

However, don't pass up a 777 if you don't have to.

If the fares are similar, go with UA.

Do you have an existing Frequent flier program with any US airline?

Horsepuckey to both!

HA would be a much less comfy ride with a lower seat pitch throughout the cabin, and generally uncomfortable seats. A UA 777, even in regular economy is by far the most comfy ride you can find in the U.S. domestic market!

E+ is there for the taking! UA will "offer" it at check in for a small fee, but the gate agents will also hand out the open seats if you ask nicely (and at a convenient time) around boarding! If you are one to pay full fare Y then E+ is the standard seating assignment.

As a Honolulu resident who travels between Hawaii and the Mainland 6-8 times a year, I can tell you that you don't want to fly a narrowbody across the pacific! The 777 naturally feels more open, but you'll really appreciate it when the drink cart is stuck in the aisle but there are still plenty of ways around it for a quick stretch or a trip to the lav.

Since your meal is BOB either way, UA does offer the fre headsets... quite a rarity these days. I am actually surprised those didn't go away during BK. Well, I shouldn't be, they still offer pillows and blankets along with snack mix packs for free.

UA is the largest carrier to Hawaii among the 5 biggest U.S. airlines for a darned good reason. You won't be disappointed when its time to fly! Have fun in the Aloha State!

Jeff

Absolutely right!!! Quoting seatguru.com: "Only on flights from the West Coast to Hawaii is there in-flight entertainment. As there is only one aisle on this very long aircraft, deplaning from seats in the back of the aircraft can take a very long time." about NWA´s 753s.

In my personal opinion, goes for HA!!! I mean, you can fly NWA and UA anytime, to Europe, inside the US, etc. But you can only fly HA to/from Hawaii. I should be a great experience, they rank as the number 1 US airline in on-time performance and last, but certanly not least, who would not love to hear "It´s my pleasure to welcome you on this HA flight to Maui. Aloha!!!"
Explore that option, they fly to Hawaii from LAX, LAS and definitely other cities (I think PDX and SEA also).
Enjoy Hawaii, be sure ot post a trip report!!!

Does the average person know this? Last time I flew UA, IAD-ORD-DFW, when I checked in they offered me E+ for a Fee of $75 dollars. Thats quite steep for simply 4 extra inches of leg room.

I decided the cost of this wasn't worth it.

I then waited until about 90% of the plane had loaded, and politely asked for a seat in E+. I was told that E+ was reserved for their Elite members. So, no upgrade for me. Choosing UA for E+ when you aren't an elite member is a risky proposition at best.

Again, the only reason to choose UA here is the 777. Because the 777 rocks!
