First Airport With Jetways?

Mon Oct 24, 2005 8:50 pm

Which was the first airport in the world to use jetways?

Thanks in advance.

No idea, but I have seen pictures of jetways being used at AMS as early as 1971.

Btw the design was exactly the same design they still have today.

I think there are airports which had them much earlier than 1971. Zurich was for sure not amongst the first airports at all, but got the first jetways in 1976.

I believe it was UA at LAX . . . . seems I saw a picture in a book by Cleary on the history of UA . . . . and that was the caption.

Most probably. However, those jetways at AMS could have been installed before 1971 as well.

TWA Terminal 5 at JFK was the first airport terminal designed with jetways.

Do you know when that was? - just out of interest....

The first airport installing "glass" jetways was fairly recently at CGN (just a few years ago).

Here's a postcard from circa 1962 at ORD showing a UA B720 connected to a "Jet-Away":

The "2DK" signifies the postcard was printed in 1962

HAJ´s T3 (or "C") opened with 8 glass-jetways before Expo2000.
IIRC by that time gates 4 and 5 at T1 ("A") already had glass-jetways as replacement of older, solid models.

Maybe so, but it wasn't the first one to have them. I think United at SFO was using them in 1960-- by 1961 for sure.
