How Much More Will You Pay To Use A Closer Airport

Sat Oct 29, 2005 8:51 am

Ok, so there is a thread on what it takes to get you to take a longer drive to get a flights. So, this one is the opposite.

The closest commercial airport to my home town is Oxnard, CA (OXR/KOXR) and is only a 10 minute drive from my parent's house or 3 minutes from my father's business (I timed it). The service is limited to an average of 5-6 Brasilias per day to LAX on United Express/Skywest (down from a heyday of probably 10-12 flights to LAX, flights to SFO, SMF and other places, as well as a short lived HPX service to PHX).

To me, the time, convinience and extra 1000 FF miles (2000 with my elite bonus) is often worth a bit extra. I would say that OXR is worth $80-$100 more to fly. Funny thing is, recently I booked my trip home for Thanksgiving and it was actually cheaper to do OXR than LAX, eventhough I have to transit LAX.

So, what is it worth to you to fly from closer to home?

I will pay a lot more to fly out of TRI versus TYS. I support my local airport.

I would never drive more than 2 hours to save money on a ticket unless it was 400+ bucks.

Well Los Angeles, I guess the closest airport to my house is Burbank at about 35 minutes by car. LAX is only about 40 (without traffic) so I think it would depend on the options available to me.

Coming in from essentially anywhere outside of the US, I'd rather fly nonstop and just stick it out with LAX. I can make it home in about 1h20 taking surface streets during rush hour on a Friday.

But during the holidays if I can get Burbank for something like $100-$150 more for a nonstop flight I'd prefer that. Imagine coming back from Vegas on the 22nd of December and landing at LAX just around 3pm and trying to get back home in time to watch Home Improvement at 5. Not possible.

Now that I am living at Oxford Heathrow is by far a more convenient airport and luckily its the only one I'd ever go to, so I'd probably spend about £100 to fly into here if I had the choice.

Although now that I've been downgraded to a penniless student maybe if I had to go somewhere out of Gatwick and I didn't think I was going to be too tired on the return, I'd spring for Gatwick.

Luton, Stansted, City are all just inconvenient.

Don't really have that sort of option here in ANC . . . it's ANC or bust really . . .

When I lived in DC I occasionally flew out of IAD  yuck  and BWI but would always prefer DCA, even though the costs were always higher, and I knew I'd have to connect somewhere if I was going transcon.

Didn't mind the extra cost because of the convenience . . . you get what you pay for. . . .

Since I live about a 10 minute drive from ATL, I don't really have a closer airport to me. BHM is really the nearest major airport with some of the same destinations that are served from ATL. Unless the fare out of BHM was still way cheaper than flying out of ATL even after factoring in the price of gas, I'd still use ATL. There are still folks in the Atlanta area who drive to BHM in order to fly WN, even with FL having a hub @ ATL. What's crazy is that about a year or so ago, DL had a fare sale going in which it was cheaper to fly from BHM to a number of western cities (via ATL) than it was to fly nonstop to those cities from ATL. And there were folks in the ATL area who took advantange of that. If I lived halfway between ATL and BHM, it would really depend on what airport offered the cheapest fare.

Even if I am leaving from work in midtown Manhattan, NYC, as I live in New Jersey I prefer EWR. That way I don't have to go through NYC to go to LGA or JFK. The make/break as to price would be $30 or more difference cheaper for LGA/JFK vs. EWR.

I am the same distance between IAD and DCA. Since I work at IAD, I try to support it as much as I can. Although I sometimes have no choice but to use DCA when IAD is booked full.

LHR is a quick car/taxi ride away from home, so it will always be my first choice. Am able and happy to pay more to fly from it as it is a whole load of hassle to head to LTN, LGW or worst of all STN from home - and the additional cost wouldn't be worth it.

Also i have more opportunity to take/use FF points from LHR than going low cost from somewhere else

Living in San Francisco, I book tickets with flights originating in either OAK or SFO. SFO is usually my preferred airport, but I am not opposed to flying from OAK either. As for SJC, no no no. I hate it, and its too far from San Francisco.

MUC and ZRH are equidistant (2 hours) from my hometown, so I have quite a big choice of cheap flights with several airlines. So I will not pay more for a closer airport, maybe I will pay more for a particular airline.

It´s about 20miles/30km for me to HAJ (via Motorways for a good portion of the trip).
Any alternative airport with a bigger selection of flights & destinations (incl. other LCC´s) is more than 100 miles further away (HAM, TXL/SXF, DTM).
Taking all that extra trouble into account that comes with much longer driving times to a more distant airport, I really stick to HAJ and am willing to pay good money for that service (though often the flights are rather affordable). Also I can get to quite a number of places with only one transfer.

Having said that, I usually choose my flights upon my personal preferences:
- time of departure (not too early)
- time of arrival at destination
- connection times (if applicable)
- carrier
- costs

In case flights turn out to be too expensive, I rather perfer not to go on that trip at all instead of driving to another airport.
Seems I´m just too lazy.

BTW: "Pleasure flying" (i.e sampling an airport or a carrier) is a totally different thing for which none of the a.m. rules apply !

I live 10 minutes from BOS, but would easily go to MHT or PVD if I could save about $75 or more. I figure that is 1-hour each way out of my way, I'm effectively paying myself $40 an hour or so to do that -- not too bad.

(this is assuming transportation to/from the airport is not an issue -- a taxi to/from BOS would be equivalent to 6+ days of parking at MHT! Then again, one can take the T for only a couple of dollars r/t!)
