Do U Enjoy Being At The Airport For Many Hours?

Thu Nov 10, 2005 2:15 am

Hello all

I couldn't find a post about this topic so I thought this would be interesting to get comments from all of you people. When you make a flight connections and they are usually minimum of 4hrs layover or longer how do you entertain yourself at the airport waiting for another flight? I remember my trip to Japan I flew on AC from yyz to ord then 2.5hrs waiting at the airport board JL to NRT then took a bus to Haneda and waited for 5hrs to fly to Okinawa Naha. I was witha group of friend and all we did was sitting at the departure lounge waiting for our late night flight to Okinawa. It gets worse waiting at NRT for our flight to SFO on JL then on AC to YYZ. At NRT we had to wait at least 6hrs for our connecting flight after arriving from Okinawa.

In portugal I had to take the last flight out of Terceira Azores to Lisbon so
I had to sit at the airport all night long from 11:30pm to 8:00am to make my connecting flight to LHR on TAP the next day. I guess I should have stayed at the airport for several hours to kill time?

Don't get me wrong I love being at the airport for certain hours but when it comes to Overnight stay at the airport or chilling for 4-6hrs during the day is no fun unless you have money to spend on something at the airport to entertain yourself hehe  Smile  bouncy

I don't mind if I am in a business lounge!

Otherwise, I find it quite boring. Especially in the hell hole that is Dublin!

Trent.
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

I don't usually mind. Especially when I have lounge access.

Don't mind it, depending on the airport. I had a 10 hour layover a few months back, at LAX. I hung out mostly in the TBIT. Free wireless, great views, good food... Can't complain too much. Now, if I was stuck in an airport like.... ICT, No thanks!

I used to love being at the airport for hours with or without lounge access...
But then I have became cabin crew and I do try to stay as far away from airport as I can when not working...  Smile
Still love flying tough, even on my days off. Big grin

Depends entirely on the airport. SIN, KUL, AMS, BEY, ICN, HKG, SFO, NGO ... YES!!! ... MEX, DEL, CCU, VIE, CDG-1, ATL, MUC ... get me out of here!

I don't enjoy it , unless I'm in a lounge(which I can only get in when I'm with my dad, which isn't often) or unless I'm near BDs domestic Gates, I just walk to the end of the pier and there's a great view of one of the runways.

I got stuck in prague airport pre-checkin for 12 hours which wasn't particularly fun after experiencing prague culture/beer for the past week.

It all depends on what airport it is. I was stuck at Rome's Fiumicino-Leonardo da Vinci for 6 1/2 hours in September because my flight to JFK was delayed due to a late arriving aircraft. Being a company employee, I'm not entitled to any access to the Admirals Club or any other VIP lounge, so I spent the time reading and watching planes take off and land. The planespotting at FCO was pretty good, and the time went by quickly. Even saw an Italian Air Force 707 (or KC-135?) take off. Reminded me of the good old days when 707s and DC-8s were the kings of the skies.

If I were you I'd plan my trips better so as to achieve better connections. Unlike some, I hate sitting around at airports, having spent so much time on the ground during my duty trips in the airline business.

I had 3 hours to kill at HAM and it was great with the observation decks.

But an airport like LGA isn't so fun.

NRT has a lot to do and see. HNL is tropical and you can usually see fighter jet training in the skies if you look for it.

But someplace like SRQ, not so exciting...  Wink

Depends on the airport. SEA DEN SLC etc I could would rather not stay at for any amount of time, even with lounge access. I have spent the night in those as well...

I like to spend time in foreign airports or international hub airports. It can be interesting just to listen to the different languages and view the habits of people from around the world.

A few years ago I was inside LHR from about 9:30 PM until ~7 am. As a foolish graduate student, I thought saving the money on a hotel room was worth toughing it out. I had no pounds and was therefore unable to even buy anything from a vending machine. Never again. Didn't sleep a wink as they were vacuuming and cleaning. Awful night.

when I planned my trip to Terceira I booked my flight online late because i was checking for cheaper fares each week so when I found one, it was available for last flight out of TER to LIS to LHR. Stayed for several days in LHR then flew home to YYZ. I don't have access to any lounges accept regular lounge for all passengers wait for their boarding time.

Greetings to All and Sundry,
I enjoy being at an airport waiting for a connecting flight. I usually go to a book store to read a few magazines such as Airways or Flight International. I then try to look for a view of the runway or at least the apron. If the view is good, I can easily loose track of time. I also enjoy watching people go about their activities. The duty free shops usually have interesting things to look at. However, as posted before, it also depends on the airport your lay-over occurs.

Greetings to All

Slept behind the NW gate in concourse A. Fun stuff, especially with the cargo a/c taking off every other hour all night long. Oh well... I got bumped up to 1st because the gate agent (she was young...and cute  bigthumbsup  ) felt sorry for me.
This isn't where I parked my car...

I did that at IAD in August on my way down to Africa. However, I landed after midnight and had to be in line at 6:00 AM, so it was a bit better then your situation. And there was a place open 24 hours and I also found the vents in the back corners of the terminal to be comfortable enough to sleep some too.

With all that said, I would want to do it again, if I could help it.

I love looking at the aircraft, here there and everywhere. I could stay at any airport for quite some time. But even that gets tiring after a while....which is why I always have my skateboard with me.  thumbsup

Really depends on the airport and how security is set up.

SLC no thanks for long waits.

ATL I would sit there all day. Same with ORD,DFW,SFO,LAX,LAS and DIA.

Some good spotting and the ability to walk around without security is huge!!

I'm like most people.. it depends on the airport. If it is a MAJOR superhub like DFW, ATL, ORD, etc.. where you only see 1 or 2 airlines continuously flying in and out.. I'm ready to go..

But if it is a small hub or non-hub airport where there are a variety of aircraft and liveries flying around, it's all good. I like RDU for that reason. However, I do wish someone would tell airlines to put a top level observation deck for those passengers that do have long layovers so they can actually see the plane movement and not have to run between jetways to look.. I've had that happen a lot of times at RDU, PVD, MIA, MSY.. and other places

Not when I'm working at one, no  Smile

When I'm merely passing through, I don't mind a bit of spotting/people watching. If I'm headed somewhere, then I get there in a hurry..on the way back, no reason not to relax at the Chili's Too in ATL  Smile

Depending what there is to do at the airport. For example if there alot of stores or good spots to see aircrafts especially those which you do not see regularly. I was at GRU in Brazil for about 6 hrs before my flight because my friend had a earlier flight and we had to travel far to get to the airport. There were a number of stores and a good view of planes taking off and landing. I met some other people there who were travelling to NY for the first time and we had a good chat . Otherwise I sat and admired nice girls passing by.

I had to spend 9 hrs at LGW when I was flying UM back in '97. Funny thing was, TWA did not have any holding pens for UMs at LGW, so I was put on the floor behind a transfer desk, and I was not allowed to wander off. One of the ladies took me to burger king halfway through, but I had to pay for it myself... Man, did that suck!

Nowadays I don't mind being stuck at airports. As long as there are windows, and it's not dark outside!

Cheers

I love spending lots of time at the airports I travel to. It gives me a chance to explore and maybe see some aircraft or airlines I've never seen before. As long as they serve coffee and have a smoking area I'm a happy camper.

I might have a 6 hrs 45 min layover at CDG next summer. I will arrive to terminal 2C and depart from terminal 2D. Is there anything to do at those terminals and can I get to the other terminals without passing through security?

Hey Guys,

I dont really like having to wait around and longest was a 7 hour transit at KIX,
but I dont mind because like most of the people that are on here I have an interest which helps pass the time. Imagine if you didn't have an interest in aviation at all. Now that would be a nightmare!

Sorry. So sorry. If it's daytime it won't be too bad. If it's night and you're forced to pay attention to the inside of the airport... well... I recommend a good book.

I've really only been there a handful of times, but I think it's pretty dreadful. That said, I think most airports are pretty bad (ZRH, MUC, PDX, SIN are the only major airports I've enjoyed) so I may not be a very good judge.
