Worst Airports In The US For Spotting

Sat Nov 12, 2005 7:25 am

Hi everyone. I want to see everyone's list of what they think are the worst airports for spotting in the US. This can be based on security/spots/traffic. Thanks!

Here is my list:

These are the only airports I've ever really had trouble in.

Other airports I've heard are hard but not visited:

In October I flew into JFK for a two week vacation to NYC. The moment I stepped off the plane (Comair CRJ, btw) I looked across the terminal out the window and could see a Varig 777 pushing back from its gate. Being the fascinated airplane nut that I am, I immediately busted out the digital and rushed over for a pic. A DL employee musta been watching me because the moment he saw the camera he rushed over and threatened to confiscate the camera if I didn't immediately put it away. I ended up leaving JFK pictureless.  Angry

I went back a week later to see if I could get some spotting done. I was very discreet with the camera this time, having it out long enough to make a quick adjustment to the shot and take the pic. I did manage to find a few good spotting points at the food court in Terminal 1, and in the enclosed walking bridge from the Airtrain to the Jetblue terminal. I also went to the roof of some of the parking garages and got some shots, but before too long a policeman patrolling the airport and stopped me and two other spotters. One of the other guys was only equipped with a pair of binoculars, and questioned the cop why he was bothering us. The cop responded by saying that having cameras, binoculars, and just being on the roof of the carpark, that we looked very suspicious. He said that unless we had a car parked up there, (which none of us did) we should not be up there. I got the impression from this encounter that simply looking at planes at JFK was very much not welcome, and by doing so, you are subject to trouble with the law. As I went home to my grandmother's house that night, I felt as though there should be a huge sign near the airport saying "The act of spotting airplanes at this airport is STRICTLY prohibited. All cameras and/or binoculars will be confiscated on sight. All violators are subject to (insert punishment here).

I can understand the law being ever vigilant in these days of high terrorism, but come on! A pair of binoculars at an airport is suspicious?

I can say this much about JFK. It is probably one of the best, if not THE best, airports in the world to spot a huge variety of airlines and aircraft. However I must offer a warning: While at JFK, spot at your own risk, and don't be surprised if you are confronted by airport employees or police.

I will take this opportunity to share some of my better JFK shots. They are not quality but nonetheless I hope you like them.

The weather was very crummy that day and I had the camera exposure too low, hence the low quality
C'mon Big B, FLY!

You are so RIGHT about ISP!  yes

One horrible airport! You can't see anything! When you actually do see something it is an ugly WN 737!  crazy

ACY is bad as well.
Hey that guy with the private jet can bail us out! Why? HE CAN AFFORD IT!
