AF Or BA To ORD?

Tue Nov 15, 2005 6:27 pm

I asked a question regarding this in the AF vs. BA vs. KL vs. LH thread but I didn't get any answers so I try again in a new topic.

I'm travelling ARN-ORD next summer and I have two options.
AF through CDG or BA through LHR. The fares are about the same.

There are some positive and negative things about both airlines.

BA

+Have had good experiences on them
+Good flight times
+Possibility to choose my seat at the check-in kiosks
+Good transfer times
+4 different aircraft types (A320, B747, B777, B767)
+Have transfered at LHR before
+I will get to go on the 777 and 767

-Have flown them before
-A little tired of the 747

+Haven't flown them before
+I get to go on the A340 and the A318, which I haven't flown before
+Fun to see a new airport (CDG)

-Don't know the quality of IFE and food
-Bad transfer times on my way home (45 min or 6 hrs 45 min)
-Not sure if I can choose my seat at check-in

I would really like to try AF but I'm not sure if I'll make it to my next flight in 45 min and 6 hrs 45 min is a very long time to wait.

Is the AF IFE on the A340 as good as BA's? Are the movies with French sound or French subtitles?

What would you choose?

Thankful for answers!

Come on guys, I really need some opinions!

I have read a bunch of trip reports but haven't gotten so many useful things out of them. Please just share some of your experiences. Good or bad doesn't matter, just let me know your thoughts on both airlines  Smile

Well....according to your listed Pros and Cons, it seems to me that you should take BA.

And if you are wondering....45 mins is not enough time.

Yeah, I'll most likely go with BA on this one. The transfer times for AF suck and I'm sure I'll get a chance to fly them later on in life.

Sorry if I have been a pain in the a**, but after all, this is the place to get info about the big decisions in life  Wink

45 mins is not enough time.

45 minutes are enough for a transfer within Terminal 2, they would not sell you the flight combination when the 45 minutes are not enough. If it is close, AF staff picks you up at the arrival gate and escorts you to the gate of the next flight.

As for the original question, both are very good airlines in my opinion!

Not sure if I can choose my seat at check-in

You can do that with their Internet check-in option.

About the 45 minutes transfer. What is the scheduled duration of the ARN-CDG flight? They always schedule CPH-CDG as 2 hours, but it's usually no more than 75-90 minutes.

Unless you flight departs/arrives in the rush hour, you will have more than 45 minutes to transfer. The two times I have transferred in CDG T2 from C to D, it took less than twenty minutes from gate to gate. The second time was indeed very crowded...
Last flight: SAW-CPH on H9 on 02/11/09 - Next Flights: 23/12/09 CPH-AAL on QI, 30/12/09 CPH-LHR on SK, 19/01/10 CPH-CDG-

My flight from ORD arrives at CDG at 8:50 (2C) and the flight to ARN leaves at 9:35 (2D). The CDG-ARN flight is scheduled to be 2 hrs 45 min.

Depending on the rush in CDG, the flight shouldn't take more than two hours. But i can take a while to get to the gate  Smile

But the transfer time should be enough. I have never flown BA, so I can not compare it to AF, but you have nothing to worry about regarding the food. AF serves the best food I have had in the skies.

Their IFE is OK, English all the way, but it is not on-demand on the A340's. As far as I remember, they have 10 movies or so to choose between, and some TV shows.
