How Soon After 9/11 Did You Travel?

Thu Nov 17, 2005 2:59 am

Hello everyone.

I was just wondering ( as I usualy do when i'm not doing much) how soon after September 11th did you travel to/inside the USA ?. ( not including 9/11 itself)
Myself ?, I flew LHR-JFK in Febuary of 2002, not THAT exactly close but the flight was only about 1/4 full.

I travelled 9/13 from Glasgow to Milan so that I could attend the Monza GP that weekend.

I also travelled the following month to the US (it was GLA -> SFO -> TPA -> GLA) and the flights were mostly full (even though SFO upon arrival was totally dead).

I don't know the exact date anymore, but it was about a week later, I flew AMS-TRN on a KLC F70. My initial plan was to fly to MCO.

3 months later I traveled to my Grandpa in Vermont/USA on LX.
Routing was ZRH-Montreal, I was the first time in my life our family flew not through LHR and not with BA.

Whilst not to/from the US I was on holiday in Barcelon when 9/11 happened and flew home three days later on easyJet. Lots of delays and chaos...

I flew the next morning, 9/12, on a PG flight BKK-PNH.

Airport was eerily quiet and the TV's were obviously full of CNN with repeated footage of the planes flying into the WTC, which was an odd thing to see televised inside an airport.

The NW check-in area was completely sealed off and was a complete ghost area.

I flew WN LAX-RNO on the 21st. It was very quiet on board, and the captain made a few remarks. The flight was pretty empty. Seems like yesterday.

I flew US PFN-MCO-PHL in December of 2001 strongly against my family's wishes. They did NOT want me to fly. I did not feel afraid at all and liked the 1/4 full airplane and less crowds at the airport.

Flew In late November MIA-JFK-MIA UA 767.
Went to ground zero and all its was horrible.

The year before my family and I went to NYC around the same time. DL 727  Wink
Well anyway one day we were going to go take a tour of the stock exchange but it was closed so instead what was just about the only major attraction I have never seen in NYC at that time. So we visited and went up. Wow what are the chances. Just about 10 months later those buildings are no longer standing.

for me it was September 11, 2003. Not for reasons you think. I hadn't flown since 2000, and it was completely unrelated to 9/11...when we moved we flew FLL-ATL on DL after driving our cars down. My last time in ATL (at least until DL ends FLL-BDL nonstop, which I hope will be never becuase I hate ATL!) I would have flown right after 9/11 in a heartbeat because I honestly did not feel scared. And by not flying and filling up the planes, the terrorists won IMHO.

I flew one month after 9/11 on Ryanair, Charleroi to Carcassonne. The flight was full and I wasn't allowed to take any bag on board as carry-on, not even my camera bag (which I found ridiculous, let alone risky for my camera being broken...)

I was escheluded to fly DEN-LGA(United), JFK-VIE(Austrian), VIE-VCE (Tyrolean) on Sept. 14, 2001 on my first trip to Italy. Instead I ended up driving from DEN to NYC for a couple of days... Got close enough to see smoking still rising from Ground Zero. Anyhow, no luck at JFK on the 14th, so I drove to PHL... same situation. Finally on Sept. 16th I made it to Washington, DC... there a nice gentleman from SAS offered to honor our reservation and he booked us on a flight IAD-CPH on SAS of course, and then CPH-VCE on Maersk. It worked out well for us. I also drove by the Pentagon and saw the area where the AA flight crashed. Came back to the US on Sept. 29, 2001 FCO-BCN(Alitalia) and then BCN-JFK(Iberia-flight relatively empty) and JFK-IAD(United Xpress)... the worst of all was driving my car back home to Denver.

December 2001, MIA-CGD. If I'm not mistaken my flight was a couple of days after that a$$hole attempted to blow up an AA but was stopped in flight when he was lighting a match.

I flew Delta flight 709 from ATL to SLC on 9-15-05. It was very surreal. I was sizing up every passenger in the gate area and on the flight for their potential as a terrorist. I could tell most of them were doing the same. The flight was about 1/3 full and of course went of without a hitch.

I was meant to be on Delta leaving from LAX-JFK-SNN-DUB on the 25th of September but my flights were rearranged and I ended up flying LAX-ATL-SNN-DUB instead. It was kinda ok. Flight was pretty full considering all that had gone on a couple of weeks previous. Flew a 757 to ATL and then I got to fly N864DA Delta's Soaring Spirit all the way to DUB.

I flew ATL-SAV the week after just a few days after they allowed flights again. My whole family was worried that something would happen which amused me. I ensured them that a lightly loaded 757 with minimal fuel and a fair amount of soldiers going to Hunter AAF was not going to be highjacked that day.

I flew the first day US airspace was reopened, I believe 15 Sep 2001. Went FLL-ATL-SAN on DL. Quite eery, but the flights were both almost completley full.

GRU-MIA in July 2002 with AA.

Not that close but there was one AA flight to MIA cancelled (767-300) and all passengers were moved to the other flight (777-200) which was obviously full, and "overbooked" by less then 10 people - don't know if that was still a 9/11 effect.

The first time that I actually flew was 11/9/2003 from LGW to GCI (I was poor in those days) although the significance of the date didn't actually occur to me until after I had arrived in Guernsey. The first time I flew to the US was in November of that same year when I flew LGW-RDU for Thanksgiving. Apart from security (on arrival in RDU) being as tight as a duck's arse, nothing much had changed.

December 27, 2001 for me, MCO-ATL-IND. All flights were fully packed. It certainly was a different experience having to say goodbye to my family at security rather than them going down to the gate like they had done for so many years previously.

Early November 2001 (I forget the exact dates) to visit my father who was in Toledo at the time. US & USx (Trans States) ABE-PIT-TOL & TOL-PIT-ABE; 733, ERJ, ERJ, MD-80 (last time I flew on a Mad Dog). On the PIT-ABE flight, the pilot would periodically mention the score of the World Series game being played that Sunday; Arizona won.

Coincidentally, my flight itinerary just before 9/11 was similar; except that the mainline flights were all 733s one of which still had the '89 USAir livery. My return flight to ABE arrived 9/9/01 shortly before midnight.

I was scheduled to fly on 9-11. AS flt from ANC-DLG. Knew about the attacks and the grounding well before I was to fly in the afternoon. It was sunday the 16th of September when I flew back home. Luckily I didnt get caught in the airport mess with all the cancellations.

I flew on 18 Sep 2001 from LHR to SYD on BA then, then again a couple of days later on QF SYD-BNE, returned to the UK 4 weeks later on BA, flight was pretty packed.

Having said that, my partner flew back a week before I did. His domestic sector BNE-SYD had been cancelled (he was reprotected on to a different flight) and he was on QF from SYD-LHR and said it was empty (lucky bugger had 3 seats to himself)

Flew to MCO in march of 2002, again on BA, and the flight was pretty packed, but getting into MCO was nightmarish. Basically TSA treated every single pax like a terrorist, and made us all feel very very UNwelcome.........

At least all the Floridians outside the airport welcomed us with a smile.....

Some friends and I drove from Phoenix to LA and spent a couple days at Disneyland a few weeks after 9/11.

My first airplane ride after 9/11 was in October of 2002...a Mesa CRJ (America West Express) PHX-LAX... full flight, and my first and last CRJ-200 flight.

Slightly OT: I flew about 4 days before 9/11, and out of BOS, too. Drove past the hotel that those #"$%& hijackers stayed in.

I remember how lax security was prior to the whole thing. My wife flew in from Washington on 9/1 or 9/2 and I was able to go right up to the gate (terminal C) to meet her. I could've gone and opened the door to the plane if I had wanted!

Neither "Safer" nor "unsafer".
While raised security measures in general are a good thing, there are a number of occasions where I nowadays think that somebody has been (or still is) overreacting (i.e. overshooting the goal).

Re "Travel after 9/11":
- 9/14 saw my mom and me flying HAJ - LHR - GLA. At LHR the baggage transfer was still closed, so we had to retrieve our luggage and make a new check-in. A lot of US-a/c still were parked at LHR as well as at GLA.

My first post-9/11 flight to the U.S. was in December 2001.

I flew in December 2001 (the day after Richard Reid tried to light his foot on fire on an AA flight) from DUS-FRA-YYC-YLW and all flights were booked solid. The airports were bustling and everyone was enjoying themselves and living their lives. The same as for the return flight in January from YLW-YVR-YYZ-FRA-DUS.

Flew on Nov 23 2001 on United SFO-CDG and returned on Nov 29. Business Class on United on 777. Service was terrific. Fellow passengers sort of quiet. Everyone still a bit on edge, especially flying.

However, I have never had a more pleasant, lovely trip to Paris in my life. EVERYONE in Paris I encountered was pleasant, kind and polite to me and my sister, knowing we were Americans. There was a blessed short amount of time there where a good deal of the world sort of came together in mutual shock and sympathy. Too bad things don't last...
Anyway, the flying part wasn't so bad.

April 2002, EWR-LHR-EWR, BA, 777's both ways for vacation for 10 days. Booked it in late March, and my flight to the UK was just after the Queen's mom died, was in Wales when the funeral took place. It was interesting talking with many people about being in the USA, and in the NYC area (I live about 15 miles from the WTC site) when 9/11 happened, visiting the WTC site 10 days after the attacks, and a few months later.
