Neatest Window View. Which Aircraft?

Fri Nov 18, 2005 1:33 am

Yesterday i got the chance to fly home from CPH with a SAS Dash 8 and as i was seated in seat 14F with a view of both the right hand side engine and landing gear i have to say that it was a pretty cool feeling to see the prop spin up on take off and see the wheel spin at that rate during take off...you really seem to get the feel of speed in the Dash 8 more than in any typical jetliner. You really understand the speed and acceleration better in that plane and with that view i think.

The landing was pretty neat too, to see the wheel go from zero to the equivalent of 100-130kts (or whatever the landing speed is of a Dash 8). To me this was a very nice experience and i hope to get more flights on the Dash 8..it was a very nice airplane in many aspects...actually even more roomy as it comes to legroom than SAS' MD's.

What's your take? Which aircraft did you enjoy the best landing/take off view from and from which seat?

I liked the DHC8 too. Although the only high wing planes I've flown have been that and the C172, I'd say high wings give the best view.

I was on a DASH-8 flight a few weeks ago on United Express flight from DEN - JAC and I must say it was a very nice flight. A little slow with an almost 2 hour flight there, but on the way back a nice hour and 15 min flight. An awesome aircraft to view the mountains of the Rockies from. Very enjoyable!

-The bubble windows on the Sea King that allow you to look not only outwards but downwards and upwards. I'd be intrugued if anyone has a picture.

-Concorde - seeing a small bit of delta wing just down below where I was sitting and dark blue indigo sky above.

-Window seats in nose of 747 where the window curves round so get a quasi forward view. 2A and 2K seem to be very good for this.

-Any seat that has two or more windows.

First choice - cockpit window on any aircraft - but that is getting a bit harder
for mere mortals like myself these days

Second choice - the partially forward facing window at the front of the
Boeing 747 . Was lucky enough to have 2A from AKL-BNE
last year - the view was cool . It is quite weird when taxiing
because you are ahead of the nose gear so quite often end
up swinging over the edge of runway/taxiway - it's pretty
neat to think that you are ahead of the cockpit crew too

Sitting in 8A on the T7 of United this summer was awesome. One could see right into the engines of the big bugger. Fantastic.

Breaking through the clouds and watching the supremely powerful engine spin was wonderful

Hi!

The neatest window view? Fokker F-27!!!! Big, wide, beautifull and specially if you take the one ( like I did... ) that sees the engine and also the undercarriage!!!! I had that luck when I flew an NLM from DUS to AMS in September 1981, PH-KFD!!!! Fantastic, just fantastic!

By far the best F/D window has got to be the tristar. Almost floor to ceiling and a fantastic view from the first observers seat (over the captains left shoulder)

CV990 and Mika must have been reading my mind. I still remember an Indian Airlines Fokker F-27 flight I took in 1967 - watching the landing gear lower while still floating over exotic scenery is something not to be forgotten, especially from the large oval windows of the Fokker. The whining of those Rolls-Royce Darts kind of helped as well....

I always thought the Avro RJ/Bae 146s views were sweet....
