Most Frivolous/ridiculous Trip You've Done.

Sun Dec 04, 2005 1:29 pm

Two for me:

1. HKG-LHR-HKG to watch England play rugby at Twickenham. Dep Fri night after work, arrive LHR about 6am. Watched the match then got the 8pm flight back to HKG to arrive Sun afternoon ready for work on the Mon. Time on the ground about 14 hours; time in the air about 24. Check-in staff in HKG couldn't stop giggling as they gave me the boarding passes for both legs. Priceless as England beat France! Big grin

2. HKG-BKK-HKG-SFO-ORD-ANC-DFW-LAX-MIA-LHR-AGP-LHR-DXB-LHR-HKG-BKK-HKG for a mate's wedding in Spain. One night stops in SFO, ANC and MIA, and two nights for the wedding in AGP. Used an AONE3 ticket to bump up the miles ( oneworld F class RTW). Great fun chatting with the FAs who all thought I was bonkers...

I think you are bonkers too :p. Why would you go from SFO-ORD-ANC-DFW-LAX-MIA? Just for MR sake, or something else?

Basically MR. When I looked at flying to Spain for the wedding, a J ticket would have been about $45k. Someone mentioned that I could fly F round the world for about the same price (if I bought it in BKK), so I started looking into it and then it just became a challenge to maximise points. Not something I'd do regularly (was supposed to do another one last month, but couldn't fit it in), but was an experience!

Hi,

My most Frivolous trip is nothing like you guy's experiences.

My most Frivolous is returning from San Francisco to London City, flying NWA/KLM via MSP and AMS, just to fly KLM Fokker 50 and to spot at MSP. I could have flown SFO-MSP-LGW for the same money, but, why take the easier road; when the longer road is more scenic.

Didn't work out tho, flight from SFO-MSP was delayed, so would have meant missing connection in MSP; ended up flying SFO-AMS on KLM Md11, then spending 3 hrs in AMS spotting, then collecting the F50 to my "flied on list"

LHR-JFK then immediately JFK-HKG, spent a few hours at HKG then straight back HKG-LHR.

About 36 hours in the air, 12 in Hong Kong.

Did it to take a Cathay Pacific polar test flight - was the first scheduled flight to land at HKG after it opened.

*Edited to add: London-Poznan to pick up my brother-in-law, spent 17 minutes in Poland before hopping on the return leg.

Flew FRA-HKG on CX on Friday noon, arrived in HKG (still Kai Tak back then) on Saturday morning and left for home on Sunday evening.

Then again, the sunday-morning flight FRA-JFK on SQ only to return on the same plane that same day wasn't bad either...

One of my more fun routings was a flight from HAJ to SFO, with the routing being HAJ-CPH-EWR-IAD-ORD-MSP-DEN-SEA-PDX-SFO, with the return flight SFO-DEN-ORD-MIA-FRA-HAJ (rather boring compared to the outbound leg  Wink).

I'll do as much as I can to fly M11's - flew MAN-CDG-HEL-BKK-HKT just to fly HEL-BKK and back on AY M11's when I could've flown direct from LGW-HKT for 60% of the cost!!

In my work as a Paralegal for law firms in NY City for many years, I have had to make same-day airline trips to serve or file documents. Usually this was due to problems when the air courier service screwed up, delays by the clients in their work, items due on short notice, where the attorney didn't want to trust the filing with FedEx (usually where a large filing fee check involved) or where the sooner filed the better. My same day trips have included LGA-DCA-LGA numerous times, EWR-PBI-EWR (down on Eastern, back on TWA, in the early 1980's), and the best with JFK-SFO-JFK.

I just started flying for "free"...

So I decided to go party one night with my friends in Windsor, Ontario.

I flew on YYC - YWG - YXU, then drove to Windsor, got drunk, then next day I was drove to YHM to fly back to YYC.  Smile (About 5000km altogether, so I can party with my friends)

Crazy....

We Love To Fly And It Shows! (pun very much intented)

I booked a flight from SDF-FLL-JFK. I could have had a direct nonstop flight to JFK, but I wanted to go on a 757. But the ERJ going to FLL was busted so I ended up on the direct flight anyway.

Wow, great stories everyone!

My story is a bit pale in comparison, but at least you guys all knew beforehand that you were going to fly. I did not.

My dad is a truck salesman, and he sometimes needs to deliver or fetch trucks from some rather distant locations.

This all happened a few years ago while I was still an apprentice earthmoving mechanic. A good friend of mine from work came through to Pretoria to visit his girlfriend on this specific Friday night and then slept over at our house. My dad woke me up early Saturday morning with the news that I was going to Durban to go get a truck for him. I thought he was joking and rather politely told him to bugger off and let me sleep. Turns out he was serious.

So, with no ticket and no seat booked on any airline, armed only with his credit card and then being told that the person who would be meeting me would be driving a green Camry and what his name was, he then instructed me to get my ass on a plane to Durban and asked my friend to drop me off at JNB International.

There I managed to get a seat on a Comair flight to Durban with minutes to spare. Back then they still operated as Comair and not as British Airways. The flight was on a 727 and breakfast was served, even though it is only a 45 minute flight.

Anyway, in Durban, I went out of the terminal building and saw a green Camry parked a little way down the row of cars parked there. I went up to it and asked the driver if he was by any chance the person I was looking for. Turns out he was.

He then took me to the dealership he worked for and I then spent the rest of the day driving a truck back to Sandton, where my dad worked. He then met me there and took me home. What a way to spend a Saturday, especially with no advance warning.

My girlfriend, two friends and myself made the same trip. We departed FRA at 8:30 AM, arrived at JFK at 11:30 AM, went to Manhattan for shopping and sightseeing and took the 9:00 PM flight back to FRA where we arrived at 10 AM or so on the next day. It was real fun to do a daytrip to the USA.

AMS-STN v.v. via TXL !!! (just to get my double Top-Bonus Air-Berlin miles: 8000 in total and you need 15000 for a free flight !!!)

It was nice, though, to see Amsterdam and Schiphol airport both times while passing at 30000+ feet both on the TXL-STN and STN-TXL stretches ...

No, the whole co-ordination system gradually went to pieces over the course of the first day. Nothing was being sent to the correct gate, and my return flight that evening was stuck on the ground for ages before departing!

Mine are fairly lame:
- I had booked BA J LHR-IAD-LHR in 2004 so I could spend Valentines weekend (flying out Friday, flying back Sunday then off to Uni first thing on Monday) with my girlfriend but cancelled as I had a clash with exams.
-A number of daytrips. I guess they are frivolous but I tend to book a number of BA Club Europe day trips per year, mostly day returns for fun with no reason other than to see a new place.

There was a similar thread on Flyertalk a while back with some comical responses: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=294946

- A guy flew AMS-HKG-AMS on CX in First to pick up a new cellphone.

Had a trip planned to TPA for 5 days - fly to TPA on Wednesday, Lightning season opener, golf school, time with the family, and fly back to New York on Saturday night.

Then a friend who was supposed to move back to England at the end of October changed his plans and was leaving that Saturday - the entire gang planned his leaving drinks that Friday night.

So I changed my B6 flight from Sat. night to Friday night and bought another ticket to go back (SRQ this time) on DL Saturday morning, returning Sunday (actually got a great rate - about $240.)

I wound up flying back to JFK Friday night, getting home about 9, changing clothes and going out (and getting absolutely bombed), back to the apartment at 4 AM, then to EWR (no sleep!), flew to ATL, on to SRQ. Hung out with the family, out to dinner...went to the hotel at 10 PM and was asleep in five minutes. Tiredest I've been since the 40 hour work day/Atlantic City sojurn, but that's another story...  Smile

Back when I lived in Chattanooga, we'd go out to dinner and the inevitable question would arise as to where we should go. Several times we decided to pay the 101st Airborne restaurant a visit. That's all well but the 101st Airborne restaurant is in Nashville, well over a hundred miles away. We'd call down to the FBO to have the C414 pulled out, preflight her and make the short hop to Nashville (about 30 minutes). On the ground there, we'd either take the shuttle or courtesy car for the five minute drive to the restaurant and treat ourselves to some of the best steak (and a fine view of the airport). After the meal we'd make our way back to the FBO, settle up with them and head home. At that time, $200 for a meal was pocket change ($100-125 for the meal and the difference being fuel costs).

2 friends and I went to Cancun for the night. We flew in on the afternoon flight and started partying that evening, ALL night, clubb'n and bar hopp'n. All 3 of us hooked up with these chicks from Montreal, went back to their hotel room (as we didn't bother getting one ourselves) and "broke'm off a lil sumthn sumthn" stayed up the rest of the night and left for the airport. We were on the first flight back to DFW in the morning.

Two trips come to mind.....

The day after Christmas, several years ago. I was stuck in Boston, with only two days off- not enough time to spend with family in California, and my girlfriend was off with her relatives. Woke up early and flew BOS-DCA (USAir Shuttle B727-200), figuring I'd go up the Washington Monument and catch a view of the city. Budget disagreements had the government shut down, meaning no trip up the Monument.... ah well, back on the metro to DCA, this time a UA A320 to ORD, to go up the Sears Tower for my view. Made it to the top, but it was cloudy that afternoon- nothing to see. Rats. Back to ORD, back on UA (DC-10 this time) to SEA, and the Space Needle. Finally got my view, and a well-earned glass of Pinot Noir! Returned to Boston on a Continental redeye, connecting in Cleveland. About 24 hours in all....

The next one was three years ago, I was in Atlanta with several hours to kill before my flight home to Tucson. Noticed Delta had a flight leaving for SNN in a couple of hours- listed for the jumpseat and crossed the pond for a shot of Bushmills and a pint of Guinness! Came back to the 'states the next morning with the same crew that took me to Ireland- they thought I'd pretty much lost my mind.

I'm married now with a 11 month old daughter, so these trips are pretty much in the past..... a fair trade, I'd say!

Simmons airlines, now part of American Eagle, had YS-11's cheap seats from MBS or LAN to ORD. So, I bought a round trip from LAN, flew to ORD, had a couple of beers in the center round lounge(it was a restaurant-bar in the early 80's) and flew back. I never left the airport and was at ORD just under three hours. That was the craziest trip I ever took.

I worked KWI-RMS then DH RMS-BWI I had a bad sinus infection but I didn't want to call in sick while in KWI (Didn't have an individual visa I was on the crew visa and I didn't want to spend Thanksgiving holiday in Kuwait). I almost passed out after landing in RMS because of the effect of the pressure change.

Frivolous.
2 a : lacking in seriousness b : marked by unbecoming levity
http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/frivolous

In that context, it would have to be the 24 hour trip I took to my grandmother's, for the sole purpose of participating in a surprise 80th birthday party for her. Although I placed great importance on it (this was the trip during which I had to get rebooked to PHL from ABE due to weather) it was a very quick trip just for fun!

Nothing for me was THAT crazy, hehe. Just a few day trips

YYZ-YXU-YYZ
YYZ-YOW-YYZ
CGN-PMI-CGN
CGN-FAO-CGN
CGN-KGS-CGN
DUD-CHC-DUD
CGN-FRA-CGN
CGN-HAM-CGN
EDI-BFS-EDI
EDI-DUB-EDI

And a few longer ones with just 2 nights or so at the destination

DUS-YYZ-YEG-YYZ-DUS
BUF-IAD-LHR-EDI-LHR-CGN-LHR-ORD-BUF

In terms of routing

KOA-HNL-LAX-JFK-LHR-HAM was a bit crazy...

Cheers

My best was the other week - LBA-EDI-BRU-LBA in 6 hours for the hell of it to get my first flights onboard ERJs!

I did fly LHR-YYZ-MIA-MCO in 24 hours a few years back, but that was because my YYZ-MCO was oversold so they sent me via Miami in J!

Plenty of day trips too:
