Wed Dec 07, 2005 8:21 am

whitch aircraft do you think [to the general public] is most instantly recognizable?
what i mean by that is if somebody was at an airport and looked at the plane thay would instantly know what it was

747 without a doubt.

In the future the A380 will be up there.

Concorde methinks. I think the 747 has less recognition because I've often heard people refer to big planes as "jumbo" even when they don't have an upper deck. Also, when the A380 hits the airports near you, it will be even less obvious to the blissfully ignorant public.

The 747 (all variants) for sure.....without doubt, the A380 from a reasonable distance cannot be mistaken for anything else, but from a distance....could it be mistaken, by lesser aviation enthusiasts, for a 340 ....

747 most likely. From afar the A38 stand a (tiny) chance of being mistake for a one decked ac. The 747 has that unique shape.

I'd also say concorde, but it's a bit small and low - you may have trouble spotting it  Smile

General public confuses a lot of plans with the 747, my 24 year old sister would be a perfect example. I'd go with concorde.

The a380 isnt the prettiest plane in the world but its defineently recognizable, close up you cannot confuse the concorde with anything else except this maybe http://media.nasaexplores.com/lessons/03-049/images/SST2.jpg

i dont think you can confuse the 747 with anything else because of the "hump"

747 in all her variants since it's been around so long, and has been a regular to more parts of the globe longer than most aircraft.

Concorde without a doubt, just more limited in appearance throughout the years.

Pre-747, I would say the 707 since her tail has the distinct antenna pointing forward, and again, were all over the globe.

I think the 747 and Concorde would be neck 'n neck on this one, but I think the Concorde would be more recognizable if only for it's shape and it's reputation on performance.

Based on my family, friends and other people I have discussed aviation/aircraft with both aviation enthusiasts and non...

747

but unfortunately I have come across instances where people call ANY 4 engined aircraft a 747 lol... i.e. A340...

I beg to differ my man. It is "THE" Concorde. It stands out. The only plane with a similar (almost the same) look is the Tu-144. I would say a good majority of people in the US and Western Europe would know it by name when they saw it.

As far as the general public goes, I beg to differ with you once again. A lot more people have actually seen a 747 or even flew on one. Think about how many people have actually seen the Concorde let alone flew on one. I myself have seen it less than 10 times @ JFK, LHR and CDG and I consider myself to be well traveled compared to the 'general public'.

Anyways, that's just my honest opinion.

We arn't talking about who has seen or rode on said aircraft, but who can pick it out. Anyone looking at a concorde will know its not a run of the mill aircraft and after all the news coverage after the AF crash I don't think many wouldn't know it was a concorde.

A lot of people mistake any widebody for a 747.

But how many people actually know the concorde? Very few. I would have to say the 747. Its the short upper deck hump which gives it away. But most people say a 747 is an aircraft with 2 decks. So, some people may confuse an A380 with a 747. (4 engines, 2 decks).

Definitely :

C O N C O R D E

Everybody in the world recognizes immediately the Supersonic with its so particular shape.

For many people, non aviation fans, any "big plane" could be 747.
As an AF flight attendant, I hear that on all my flights, whether we are on board a B777 or even an A332 !!!

Nobody in the world who is seeing a Concorde would say "Look !!! that's the AXXX or B7XXX !!! ", even in the dark.

(Next to exotics like the Concorde/TU-144)
The 747 is the most distinctively designed airliner ever. Its the ultimate in classic airliner design without a doubt. Every detail is done right. Fuselage shape, 4 perfectly spaced engines, tail, the wing design and angle, even the winglets of the 744, all just as beautiful as they are unmistakable.

I think the Concorde is by far the most recognisable aircraft. It has probably gotten the most attention in the media than any other aircraft due to it's speed , design and prestige. It's distinct shape draws attention to even the most non-aviation enthusiast. Some have mentioned the TU 144 here and most people who are not aviation enthusiast would probaly think it is a concorde as they probably have not even heard about the TU144. The 747 with it's hump is also very recognisable again due to the media coverage it has received and the distinction it had for a long time as being the largest airliner. When most people think of a jumbo jet they think of the 747, it has been popular with many large legacy airlines, it serves as airforce 1 most of the time, and have been featured in many movies.

The average person doesn´t know the Tu-144 at all. Paint it in a BA or AF livery and they´ll say it´s a Concorde. Put both planes next to each other with the same livery and they can only guess which one the Concorde is.

But I have to say the An-225 is very easy to recognize, although non-enthusiats don´t know what it is.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

Without any shadow of a doubt, the most recognisable aircraft in the world is Concorde. The only other aircraft I've ever known non aviation minded people recognise instantly is the Harrier jumpjet. BUT.... EVERYBODY...... recognises the most stunning aircraft ever built. Concorde.
