How Did You Choose Your Preferred Airline?

Fri Dec 16, 2005 12:47 pm

With so many carriers in the world today, how did you decide on a preferred carrier? Or do you have more than one?

was it based on:
Location
Prices
Frequencies
Aircraft
Service
Carrier Websites

I'm still debating on AA and UA. I logged my first miles with AA and want to try UA and get some miles in their FF program. Then choose based on service who I like better. But I lean more to UA because they operate more heavies out of ORD, I love UA's terminal(T3 is just a mess right now), and their aircraft's new livery. But, it seemed like AA had more frequencies to places i wanted to go in the future, mainly to the U.K. This is a hard one.

ok your turn!!  Smile

All of those you listed above, as well as the actual frequent flyer program itself.

Location-I'm in ATL so Delta is a good choice for non-stops.

Prices-DL matches Citrus on most flights where they both fly. I know I'm usually going to get screwed anyways because I travel for business and get changeable tickets because of my schedule changes.

Frequencies-DL has tons of non-stops many times a day to many places. Big item here for me. AirTran has less flights and any other carrier is going to make me connect somewhere that is nowhere near where I need to go.

Aircraft-Doesn't matter to me what I fly as long as it gets there in one piece. Heavy or small I don't really care. They all do the same thing.

Service-DL treats me right. AirTran was fine the time I flew them but they just don't go everywhere I need to go. Perhaps it is because I'm a Gold Medallion but they have never treated me bad.

Carrier Websites-Not a huge deal to me as long as I can see my trips and pick seats.

Add into these the FF program.

My first flight that I can remember was on NZ, so NZ has become my favourite carrier. Use to do all my flights on NZ intill October

- network (routes, destinations)
- schedule (number of daily departures)
- service both on the ground and in the air
- reliability/ safety
- "value for money" (actually a function of the parameters mentioned above)

I chose Qantas...

* Value for money. All you need to do is book smart for pricing similar to the LCCs

* Good Frequent Flyer programme. Contrary to reports, I've found it simple to book award flights (SYD-LAX).

* Great service... full service domestic and excellent service international. The F/As have been nothing but brilliant.

* Excellent network - they fly anywhere I want to go within Australia. The fact that they're a part of OneWorld (comprising some of my other favourite airlines) is just a double bonus

* Decent lounges - always Internet service, lots of booze and a good food selection

I have flown other Australian domestic airlines (Ansett, Jetstar) and I still prefer the QF experience. Internationally, they're definitely up there with the best.

Trent.
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

NW for me for several reasons:

-Most of the time, NW is the cheapest
-Largest carrier at my airport (GRR), thus most destinations, frequencies, and connecting opportunities (3 hubs plus 4 p2p destinations)
-Skyteam member (3 US airlines to earn/redeem miles on rather than 2 in Star Alliance or 1 in oneworld)
-Good FF program
-Lots of frequencies out of GRR with DC-9s (I can't get enough of 'em!) and an occasional 752 (mostly during spring break)

I also have FF programs with UA and AA, but I have yet to fly on either (although that is bound to change)

My favourite airline is Air France.

I flew a couple of times with them (long-haul, short-haul, in Business Class, in Economy Class, on the jumpseat  Wink) and I always liked the excellent service, the food, etc. They have many daily flights from several German airports to CDG and from there to destinations all around the world and they offer Biz and Eco Class flights for good fares.

Unfortunately does their FFP suck, I am silver member until the end of 2006 but then I will change to another Skyteam FFP. FlyingPoo FlyingBlue is almost as bad as Shithansa's Miles&Less is.

I always tried to fly with different airlines - just for the experience. But once the Frequent Flyer Programmes kicked in, I try to travel on Star Alliance, and if that is too expensive, not suitable, or full, I try to get on OneWorld carriers, and finally on SkyTeam. However, Star brings me to almost everywhere, so I am happy flying with them.
Out of Star my favourites are NZ, SQ and UA. I LOVE CX and BA as well, so never sorry "having to fly" OneWorld...

Well, US Airways was the first airline I went on when I had begun getting interested in Aviation and I really liked US so I guess thats how I got my preferred airline, also influenced my preferred aircraft (A333)

MSP is the airport nearest to my home. Up until two years ago, I chose NW because of price, convenience, and destinations. Since then, AA is preferred because of their prices, frequencies, and destinations.

I travel to London more often now and I prefer LHR over LGW. AA flies to LHR and NW only goes to LGW. Codesharing NW on KLM to LHR is a lot more expensive than AA. NW has also done away with their MSP-LGW flights.

I also travel to AUS more often and AA beats NW on price and timing whenever I need to go. Although NW has MSP-AUS nonstop, they seem to really nail you for that convenience. I don't mind changing planes at ORD, STL, or DFW.

Given that fact I live so close to MSP, its always been NW. But, after my last trip abroad I flew CO and they will now get my business over NW. Way better service and more comfortable a ride. Besides, I have some other issues with NW that has made me disgruntled.

Living in the NYC area, I'm sort of spoiled for choice, so I have no preferred airline. I have FF accounts on OW (AsiaMiles) and Skyteam (OnePass) though, so that will usually influence it. I usually end up flying BA or CX longhaul and CO within the US.

I am loyal to UA. It started out when I lived in SEA and UA was by far the best network carrier. They were the only airline that could fly you anywhere in the country. Flying AA or NW would necessitate taking codeshare flights on AS. While I like AS, they don't have the best first class cabin and I can get fed up with 737s.

I maintain my loyalty to UA because I have earned status which is a nice perk. Also Star Alliance has a good international reach.

Well I fly AA most of the time. Main reason is because I live in MIA. But there fleet is good and service is good, and prices are not bad. But if I lived in SFO I sure I would fly UA or ATL it would be DL and maybe some F9. AA is just the easiest airline to use from MIA. And accumulating miles on one airline is nice. Sure when I travel to NYC or Chicago I could chose a few different airlines but I stay with AA.

Trial and error. I flew them first and decided I enjoyed flying with them, however I have a preferred alliance rather than a preferred airline in particular

Ever since I can remember I have always flown Qantas. Location helps and I am a fan or receiving service on flights. Since being a part of their Frequent Flyer Program it creates more of an incentive to keep on flying them. I do however, look forward to flying other carriers to try their product. Even though I am loyal to QF, if a chance arrives, I will fly another airline.

I'm trying to decide between US Airways and the NW/CO/DL trio currently. I have the US Debit card from Bank of America, and am earning (very few) miles, but earning them nonetheless. I, for some reason, love PHL, and am not sure if I want to bid it adieu. But on the same token, CO has good service, NW has -9ers and DTW (beautiful and convenient), and DL has ATL and domestic widebody flights. Totally stuck.
In regards to the bank cards, I can't get the DL Amex, but I can get the CO Debit card anytime, if I switch my bank to Chase. Would it be worth getting the CO card to use the mileage on the Skyteam trio?

I chose QX because they just have this wonderful atmosphere you
just don't see these days.
The teamwork is remarkable, and despite the complaint here and there,
they always please. But believe me this was not based on the meals!
Basically everything you listed above lead up to why I chose the best airline!

I was a member of the Gold Wing with Ansett when they where in service ,as I felt they where the better airline at the time. But when they collapsed I changed over to Qantas as they have a better network out of Darwin than Virgin and service is far superior to them as well. fare wise it makes no difference as both charge about the same , so it is all down to service levels Virgin have none you want you pay , and if you are lucky they may have what you want.Qf choice of 2 courses at main meal times served by a profesional crew that suits me fine.
thank god i was not born a bird. this type of flying is much better

my preference is Air Canada because my dad worked for the company as a pilot. My loyalty is with AC all the way. I've always enjoy flying with them.
I don't care what other people say about negatives thing on AC.

I care about FF Programs first and foremost.
I'm dedicated to AA this year after getting Gold with the Gold Challenge (read up on another forum if you need to know what it is) and since I want at least base elite with some airline if at all possible.

Continental for
- Inflight service (multiple beverage services on just about any flight longer than 2 hours, meals at mealtimes, IFE)
- Fleet (All Boeing, though I am getting a bit tired of 738s)
- Customer service on the ground
- Followup Customer Care (any time I've written a letter I've received a prompt and personal response, usually including a telephone call)
- Location/Routes (living in Cleveland now as a "mini-Hub" for CO makes things convenient)

UA because
1) my dad was a Skywest pilot
2) UA was the only airline whose UM program did not start at age 15, but now I'm almost 15 anyways, but I'll still stick with UA Big grin
3) DEN is a great middle point when I fly STL-LAS (six or so times a year)
4) I can usually fly out of STL on a regional aircraft, and commuters are my absolute fav!
5) UA is usually the cheapest when I fly to and from smaller airports(PWM, GEG, etc)
6) When I fly home to Thailand, I usually take TG, so I can rack up MP miles on my UA account
7) I get bumped up to Economy Plus a lot, so that is always cool Big grin
8) The customer service agents generally follow up on complaints pretty well, but I'm still waiting for compensation for when we made two emergency landings with fire trucks and all that jazz, we were delayed for eight hours, and I missed all my connections, and then all the flights that I was rebooked on

But no matter what, I love to fly UA, and even though once I turn 15(this month!) I can fly whatever airline without having to be a UM, I think I will still fly UA, unless another airline is like, $200 cheaper or something. Big grin
