Your Return Flights In One Day For Fun?

Sun Dec 18, 2005 2:12 am

Hey!

All I've ever wanted to do is just book a flight out to any place, then catch the next flight back. Just for the thrill of flying.

Now I know a lot of you out there would have done this, so what flight's have you taken in one day and back for fun?

At the moment I'm looking into LGW-AMS with easyjet.

But in the past I've done...

Quoting TupolevTu154 (Thread starter):

I have taken many same-day return flights within Europe, mostly I stayed at the airport for spotting or I visited the city before flying back home.

I had also the luck to be on many flights were I spend the whole time on the cockpit jumpseat, basically I stayed 30 minutes at the destination airport before flying back on the same plane with the same crew, I did it just for the sake of flying and it was perfect to kill time on boring weekends.

The best was a FRA-JFK flight on Singapore Airlines on a Saturday morning with the return flight in the evening of the same day. My girlfriend, two other friends and myself spent a day in Manhattan for shopping and sightseeing and then we went back to the airport to catch the flight back to FRA. Every person who heard about this crazy trip said that we are completely nuts (which is actually very correct Big grin).

Not necessarily just for the fun of flying, but in taking a daytrip to Nashville a couple summers ago to visit some friends I specifically picked the flights: on US Airways, and got 2 new planes: EMB170, ERJ145; and a new airport for me: DCA. Left BDL at 6:40am and got back around 11pm, was a fun trip Smile

Last week I did a quick ML and flew from MSP-MEM-PHX and back in one day. Spent only about an hour at PHX. I've flown into LGW a few times only to spend the day in London and then fly to DUB later that evening for my end destination. This spring I went MSP-SFO for the day. Had a nice day in San Fran and took the red-eye back.

These are day trips I made for spotting and short city visits:

AMS-LHR with KLM and LHR-AMS with Kenya Airways
MST-AMS v.v. with KLM exel
MST-STN v.v. with KLM exel
EIN-AMS v.v. with KLM exel
EIN-HAM v.v. with Metropolis
ANR-AMS v.v. with KLM exel
BRU-LHR v.v. with Virgin Express
DUS-TXL v.v. with Deutsche BA
VLC-CDG v.v. with Vueling
VLC-SVQ v.v. with Vueling
VLC-PMI v.v. with Air Europa

And, although it was for work, I very much enjoyed the numerous day trips out of Valencia on Air Nostrum flights. Also international routes such as BCN-TRN, BCN-NCE, MAD-TLS and MAD-OPO.

Could be tough trying to work them all out...in the past few years I've managed the following, all on BA.

LGW-AMS-LGW
LGW-JER-LGW
LHR-BCN-LHR
LHR-TXL-LHR
SOU-EDI-SOU
LHR-BCN-AGP-BCN-LHR (legs between BCN and AGP on IB)

A friend does multiple day trips over weekends, one his more crazy ones over a long weekend.
Thu: LHR-BCN-AGP-BCN-LHR
Fri: LHR-BCN-AGP-LHR
Sat: LHR-JFK-LHR (arrives early on Sunday)
Sun: LGW-JER-LGW

A bit too hardcore and obssessive for me, one per month was my target for day trips!

LBA-AMS-LBA with JET2
MAN-AMS-LBA with JET2
LBA-BFS-LBA with JET2
LBA-AGP-LBA with JET2
LBA-DUB-LBA with Ryanair
LBA-AMS-LTN-AMS-LBA with JET2/Easyjet

Gotta love those low cost fares!

Quoting PMN (Reply 14):

Just booked another '4 in a day' trip.

LBA-BHD with FlyBE - Should be my first time on a Dash 8!
BHD-MAN with BA - Should be my second time on the Dash 8!
MAN-LHR with BA
LHR-LBA with BMI

All for £104!

A quick question for those of you who've done day trips from the UK to the US... Have you ever had any problems with immigration? Have they ever been suspicious of the reasons you're only there for a few hours?

Done a few myself;

PLH-BRS-PLH.... Bored and wanted to fly on Air Southwest's Dash 8.
PLH-BRS-DUB-BRS-PLH.... Wanted to fly a Ryanair B732.
BHX-DUB-BHX.... Good suggestion by Ben (ex British767) lol!

Also a done few extravagant one way routings instead of flying direct;

BHX-DUB-SNN-LPL-BCN.
BHX-AMS-BCN-MAH
BHX-DUB-BRS-PLH

All for the fun of flying:D But I think if you can try and spend some time in the city you visit, otherwise you'll be missing out.

I've done the Shuttle LGA-BOS-LGA on a day trip. It is very common for some businessman to hop back and forth between NYC and DC/BOS.

I might be trying jetBlue's new E190s on a day trip to Boston soon.

My daytrips, just for fun:

AMS-CGN-AMS KLC
AMS-LHR-AMS KL (multiple times)
AMS-LGW-AMS HV
AMS-STN-AMS KLuk
AMS-ZRH-AMS KL/SR (multiple times)
AMS-MUC-AMS KL
AMS-BCN-AMS KL
AMS-CDG-AMS KL/AF (multiple times)
AMS-BRU-AMS KL/SN (multiple times)

I know somebody who flew AMS-CUR-AMS, departed AMS 23.35 arriving CUR at 04.30, leaving CUR 16.00 arriving AMS 06.00. Just to spend 1 (!) morning in CUR with his family!!

Apart from numerous sameday returns using only 2 or 3 airports (for pleasue and business), there were some outstanding routings for me:

TUS - PHX - LAS - SLC - LAS - PHX - SLC (HP/DL)
TUS - SAN - LAX - TUS - PHX - ABQ - TUS (WN/UA/HP/DL B727)
LAS - SFO -- rental car to RNO -- RNO - LAS
TUS - PHX - ONT -- rental car to SAN -- SAN - LAS - TUS (HP)

And recently on consecutive days:
LGB - LAS - LGB (B6/HPX)
SNA - SFO - SMF - BUR - OAK - LAX - SNA (UAX/WN)
SNA - SJC - LAX - SNA (AA/UAX)

Way too many to list!
The craziest were day trips to LHR, ORY, and CPT.
I was on the plane more than I was on the ground.

For the CPT trip, I flew LAS-EWR on a Wednesday night, connected to MIA, arriving Thursday morning. On Thursday evening I flew MIA-CPT, arriving Friday afternoon. Stayed in CPT and visited a friend for just over 24 hours, and left for MIA on Saturday evening. I arrived in MIA on early Sunday morning, flew MIA-IAH-LAS, and went right to work on the ramp when I got back there to LAS.

ATL-BOS-ATL 5 times on FL and DL (technically 4, as I got stranded overnight in BOS)
ATL-Washington D.C. (IAD and DCA) Six times total on FL (IAD 4 times) and DL (DCA twice)
ATL-LGA-ATL on FL (Got off the plane, checked in for the return flight, got back on.)
ATL-MCO-JFK-ATL on DL (ATL-MCO and MCO-JFK were on a 777, JFK-ATL on a 763)
ATL-MCO-TLH-ATL on DL/OH
ATL-PDX-ATL on DL (Did this three times back in late 2000, back when DL flew the MD-11s to Japan through PDX)
ATL-MSY-ATL on FL (Fun daytrip of drinking and gambling.)

I frequently fly HA LIH-HNL and back in one day for business. Sometimes I will have an all day meeting that requires me to catch the 0630 flight to HNL and return on the 1800 flight back. It happens quite frequently for many business travelers within the state of Hawaii.

I did this yesterday too for fun. Went to HNL to hit the after Christmas sales at the major malls and returned back in time for dinner.

I've done a few of them over the lat 3 1/2 years mainly to take advantage of some low fares that were offered at the time. More recently, I done the same-day return to attend an actual planned function (AI 2005 Show at MKE, Airline Show 2004 & 2005 in BOS, niece's birthday party, meet w/a friend).

My Same Day r/t itineraries:

PHL-PIT-PHL
FL twice in 2002.
I've not yet had a chance to take advantage of WN's PHL-PIT service yet.

PHL-BOS-PHL
FL 2003-2005.
Done this one several times; especially in 2003-2004.

PHL-PVD-PHL
WN 2004-2005.
Done this one twice to attend niece's birthday party.

PHL-MKE-PHL
YX 2005 to attend the fore-mentioned AI 2005 show.

Interesting topic! I've been thinking about taking such flights for a while. Just yesterday when looking through the low fare calender of Norwegian, they were selling Oslo - Algarve - Oslo (OSL-FAO-OSL) for only NOK 376 in total (about $56) That's just ridiculously cheap, considering the length of the flight. And it's even on a saturday! Wouldn't that be the best saturday night entertainment or what!

However, there's a problem, and I therefore have a question for you: The plane is only staying 40 minutes in Algarve before returning. Obviously it must be the same plane on the return flight, so delays are not an issue, but the webpage still complaints about too short time for check in...

So do you know if it is possible at all to take such flights where the return trip is with the very same plane? (or does this vary from airline to airline?)

Has any of you done this? And do you have to leave the plane, or can you just lift your feet when they're cleaning  Smile

Just made DUS-BCN-DUS with LH last week for a mileage run, had fun returning on the same aircraft with the same crew, especially when I told the F/A that I was going back to DUS  Smile Otherwise, I usually take cheap FR flights when I'm in the need to fly, I'm flying CRL-CIA-CRL next week...
