2005 Airline Story Of The Year

Tue Dec 20, 2005 4:22 am

What would be your vote for the top airline story of 2005?

Some ideas:
1. AF YYZ crash and all 309 survivors?
2. Dual bankruptcy filings of DL on NW on the same date?
3. Ther merger of HP and US?

What are your thoughts?

Quoting BigGSFO (Thread starter):
1. AF YYZ crash and all 309 survivors?

The fact that all passengers and crew evac'd in under 3 minutes, without the use of all emergency exits, is testament to the excellent training and flawless execution by the crew.
Ok, wait for the RJ to pass, cleared to push tail south Mike, and you're cleared to spin #2 in the push.

I'm basing this list on relevance of each to the whole industry and its potential place in history. I'd say here are the top 5:

1: HP/US merger (I don't think two airlines of such size have ever combined equally - AA/TW was moreso a takeover)
2. DL/NW BK same day annoucements - wierd how two giants would annouce such as thing on the same day.
3a. All the crashes around the world that seemed to come within two weeks of each other - the ones in Kenya, Greece, and South America - highlights the danger of foreign travel (by which, I mean, the less industrialized nations' airlines that utilize older out of date aircraft).
3b. WN at Midway - WN's first fatality, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they took a serious look at their operating practices and made some noticable changes.
4. NW mx strike - created a very sizeable dent in NW's operation for awhile
5. The AF YYZ crash - I don't think it's number one, simply because even though it does highlight a remarkable performance by the crew and the airplane design to get everyone out safely, the long term effects of the story are minor.

Let the debate begin

2005 truly was not a good year for NW.

2k5 was not a good year for commercial aviation in general. The highlight of the year IMHO; The first flight of the Airbus A380.

How about B6's emergency landing at LAX(?) after circling around several times with its nosegear stuck sideways?

Looks like I'll need to rethink my top 5.......

1. AF crash and everybody survives!
2. A380 first flight.
3. B6 emergency landing live on TV (+ everybody survived)
4. Dual backruptcy by DL and NW.
5. HP/US merger- hope it turn out good!
