Memorable Airline Slogans

Tue Dec 20, 2005 2:04 am

Over the years, there have been hundreds of ad campaigns with catchy slogans (or "tag lines" as they are called in the advertising business) and most fall by the wayside after a short time. But some have endured and even become part of the lexicon. Prime example "The friendly skies of United." I often hear people use the term friendly skies even when they fly another carrier. Just tossing out a couple other of my favorites:
BA - World's Favourite Airline
EA - Wings of Man (although I had a much lower opinion of the airline)
CO - Proud Bird with the Golden Tail (referring to their older liveries)

What are some of your favorites?

This was done a while back - but it's always good to update.

How about..

Air Europe - It's Nice to Fly With Friends

BA (1970s?) - We'll take good care of you. Fly the Flag.

TWA - You're Gonna Like Us. TWA

While TWA's "You're gonna like us" was catchy, I also liked their later "The most comfortable way to fly" campaign of the mid to late '90s. It conveyed class and professionalism, even though financially the airline was in a lot of trouble.

I think Delta's "We love to fly and it shows" was one of the best and well-known of all time.

Maybe it wasn't that memorable after all!  Smile

United had their "Rising" tag line for a year or two... I don't think it was well received but I didn't mind it. I've heard of worse.

American Airlines was "Something Special in the Air".

I always thought Eastern had a great slogan in "We have to earn our wings every day". I also liked AA's old slogan, "(From the sunrise in the east to the sunset in the west) We're American Airlines, doing what we do best".

I liked this one:

Thai: Smooth as silk

The one from Indian Ailrines: "50 years of flying".....this seems incomplete. I would have it this way:

"50 years of flying you like cargo"

WN - Just plane smart
CO - Work hard. Fly right.
HP - What we serve is you (older slogan)
HP - Get on Board.

A few of my favs. I also like AA's Something special in the air (all sorts of puns could go with that).

In this world, Singapore girl, you're the only way to fly.

Or something to that effect. Not really a slogan maybe - but it's on their stupid ads.

Utterly disgusting.

I loved that ad campain for "The most comfortable way to fly," which featured the Radio City Rockettes kicking their legs over the back of each coach seat! Nobody did it with as much glam as TWA, even in the dark days.

Here are some I remember from 1987/1988.

EA - "We've Got Your Ticket"

CO - "Working to be your choice" (after a bumpy merger with PE)

1990/1991

EA - "There's No Stopping us now" (after the strike)

NZ used to have

"Nobody does it better" - (using that godawful Carly Simon song from one of the Bond movies) in the late'70s not surprisingly this was pulled after their DC-10 crash in Antarctica

"the Ritz of the skies" early '80s ( I think ) with a cute little logo of an NZ 742 with a top hat perched above the flight deck and a cane tucked under the right wing

Well if it's time for another round, let me add my input.

British Caledonian: 'We never forget that you have a choice'

Taken up briefly by Air Europe who advertised after BCal's merger with BA, 'You still have a choice'.

And IB's excellent slogan "only the aircraft gets more attention than you" which judging by these pictures

If the planes are allowed to get that dirty, then it accurately reflects IB's standards today!

Swissair (the original) also had some excellent slogans advertised during the early 1970's. I cannot remember the exact words but they were something along the lines, "only Swissair could meet the high standards demanded by the Swiss" followed by pictures of passengers complaining that they had arrived 2 minutes late, their coffee was 2 degrees too cold/too hot, the seat was 2 inches too tight, and something with a picture of a packet of powdered milk next to a coffee saying that they would only serve powdered milk on their aircraft when cows produced it.
MOL on SRB's latest attack at BA: "It's like a little Chihuahua barking at a dying Labrador. Nobody cares."

bmi - 'civil aviation' & 'flying through the air'

On the Visa card they use 'The sky's no limit'

Although I miss the old diamond livery I do like the current colours and the way they use typically British scenes such as a mini speeding down a road, a boat beached or a union jack flying in the wind.
