Extremely Ignorant MD-80 Question

Sun Dec 25, 2005 10:55 am

I know this is probabaly one of the stupidest questions in A.net history,
however, you are the only people I can ask without looking like a total idiot.

A few of my friends got into a fight about how to pronounce MD-80.
Is it

MDdash80
or just
MD80?

I would love to be the one to set the record straight,
but I am not sure anymore myself!

I just say MD80, and everyone else I know does do.
Is it weird I have a RemoveBeforeFlight pitot cover on my car rear view mirror?

I just say MD80

That's exactly what I thought it was, so I will go with that.
Thanks!

usually if there's a dash, it's not pronounced.

Same goes for like 737-600....I usually ignore the dash and just say "Seven-thirty-seven six hundred".

but for the series numbers like DC-9-50....depends, lol. "DC Nine Fifty" can sound like "DC950" .... but "Nine-dash-fifty" puts a better separation.

So.......

To each their own.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

Don't pronounce the dash. And impress all your friends with your geekiness and call it the Maddog.

I once tried to say MadDog to a AA pilot and he seemed glad, that I told the plane MadDog instead of MD80.

Still between friends and family I call it the MD80.

I don't think it's a stupid question at all. I always wonder how people pronounced aircraft names. For the MD80, I usually say MD80 or Super80. I almost never say the dash for any a/c (except the Dash 8 Wink).

Does anyone knows where this nickname comes from? For JumboJet & the so called Whale Jet, it's obvious but what about the Maddog?

Only time I've ever heard "dash" used in the pronounciation of an aircraft name are on these bad boys:

Last year, I asked an AA CSA if flight 2195 was an MD80 or 738. She said, "We have Super 80's. We don't have any MD80's."  bitelip
