AC, BA Or Zoom To LHR From YVR

Sat Jan 07, 2006 5:49 pm

I am travelling to London for some project work in late January for a few weeks. I am looking at my options for carriers. Looking at just price BA is the most expensive at $876.00 return in Y class (i am traveling in Y class), AC is second being $790.00 return and Zoom is the cheapest at $649 return, however they fly into LGW not LHR. Who offers the best seat, service, meal, entertainment and overall value on this route? I am thinking AC might be the way to go, but then Zoom has had fairly positive reviews. I've heard BA World Traveller 32" seat pitch is not as a good as AC at 34". Any thoughts, comments, advice is welcome!

For entertainment, BA I think has PTV's in Y. AC's 343's don't. However they usually have a quite good mainscreen selection.
Can't compare them to ba, 'cause I never flew BA longhaul, but AC's economy seats on the 333 and 343 are VERY comfy. good seat pitch and, most important, a very good seat design that keeps you really comfortable... I'd go for AC, but then, can't really compare the different options..

Over the past 25 years, I have done this route more times than I care to remember on both AC and BA - I've never flown with Zoom. I prefer BA because of their in-flight entertainment - not only do you have PTV but you also have a number of channels to choose from. I don't tend to like AC's selection of films because, inevitably on a flight as long as the one from YVR and LHR, there'll be a mediocre Canadian film and I don't think they pace the entertainment well. As I find it impossible to either read or sleep on flights, I find having constant and varied in flight entertainment to be a great bonus. Additionally, I generally find BA's catering and general level of service to be better than AC's. AC's flight attendants, with some notable exceptions, tend to be a rather lazy lot. Personally, I don't find much difference between BA's 32 seat pitch and AC's 34. Consequently, if I can afford it, I fly BA.

I'd go with BA. Good service, okay seats and a lot of tv to choose from. Plus its a 747  Smile

You're gonna get a lot of bias based on where each member comes from.  Wink

I have always found BA to be a very civil airline, with a sterling reputation. Every flight on which I have flown has always been the same .... good on-time departure record, clean aircraft, professional flight attendants. In-flight service has always been leading edge. And that goes back to the old BOAC days when flying on a VC-10 from ANU to JFK, or LHR to NAI!

While, AC is no less safe, and also has a "diabolical" internal drive to be on time, we seem to be hit and miss on flight attendant friendliness. But I would have thought the YVR based f/a's would be friendlier than the ones we encounter from time to time out of YUL. Catering is subjective, but I feel AC has the edge on comfort. As far as IFE, it depends on whether you encounter an aircraft with the new AVOD PTVs, as they are being installed as we speak.

But if I were choosing .... I'd go with Zoom, just for the "adventure" factor alone. LGW is fine if you are not looking for connections. And hey, its probably an airline you have never flown, possibly an aircraft type you have never flown and certainly a safety card you don't have!  Smile
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

Deleted post, missed that you are flying from YVR and not YYZ

I would suggest Zoom. I flew them in Sept/Oct 2005 YYZ-GLA return in their Premium Economy. Outstanding service, approx. 36" pitch, leather seats, dedicated front cabin, complementary amenities kit, complementary wine, etc, etc, etc.

Only drawback is that it is on an older B763, but I like those aircraft so it didn't bother me. IFE was consisted of your standard 3 movies and then filler TV shows. But if you have a computer or travelling with someone, the time goes by quickly.

Well worth the extra $110 and would not hesitate to make them my first choice when flying across the Pond again.

Sorry no trip report as I didn't take too many details and only have pictures of the flight deck (C-GZMM).

Contact me if you would like further details.
