What Do You Do When Your Aircraft Is Delayed

Sun Jan 08, 2006 9:04 pm

Currently my aircraft is delayed by 30 minutes. What do you do when your aircraft is late?

I occupied some of the time looking for a free wifi connection which I have now found. Big grin

you wait;

interesting subject you brought up; my flight on Friday night was delayed and I was sitting in the plane and we didn't get off for 2 hours. Trip report to come;

Las Vegas is also good during a delay as it has wifi.

edited to add;

you text all your friends telling them how bored you are;

I wander round duty free smelling and squirting all the perfumes and come out smelling like a prostitutes parlour (or so I've been told, not that I know from personal experience, lol) I also go and get more drink and sport more aircraft. But, saying that, I've only ever been delayed by one hour (touch wood) so still not very long to wait.

During my longest delay ever, about 11 hours on flight DJ863 NCL-PMI in 1997, we drank lots of beer, ate lots of pizza, bought lots of scratchcards and won a modest amount of money. Oh, and watched a noisy Sabre Airways B727-200 take-off, among the many other aircraft.

Happy days!

I've never had a delay of more than an hour and a half, but usually I just put up & shut up once I have found out the reason because I know everything that must be done to get us all off the ground. I also know not to take it out on the staff on that flight because they are delayed from doing their work, and often have to stay back because of it.

If I'm still at the gate, I just walk around. I walked around AAs parts at ORD last summer with nothing to do. Then I fell asleep.

If I'm in the plane/on the apron/before taking off, I either sleep or look out the window.

Not much can be done, and certainly the staff can't do anything about it.

Well, being an immature teenager(I know I know, sorry) I run around the airport with all my friends, cuz all of us on the west coast, connect in DEN before continuing onto STL. Like, we all connect up, and try to get on the same flight, so that the dorm bus doesn't have to make a gazillion trips. Coming back home from Christmas break, on January 3, we had a six hour delay on GoJet, so we did some stupid things like playing soccer on the moving walkway, and we were gunna play cards on it too, we had enough time, it goes slow enough, but ya know, if ya don't have cards, that poses an issue. I know, I was immature, but when you go to a private school, and for once, your free, without a dean watching ur every move, you go absolutely wild lol. It was great!!!!! Big grin

if its during the day at FLL or BDL I would do an extended version of my plane spotting. At FLL I rotate around the terminal a few times when I spot going from D5 around to D6 and back.

If its at night I'd sit tight and wait up for a little...and even then do the best I could to spot a little. (which is why I like delays in the summer, I can still get a hint of daylight at about 8-8:30 sometimes)

It depends

I fly CDG-LHR all the time and delays are a habit so, I just don't even notice it. Wander around terminal 2, eat at East, and en lounge.

Once I was connecting in ATL from LAS to CDG. My LAS-ATL flight was 20 min early and my connecting flight 4h late. I enjoyed the lounge for 7h !!!! They stayed opened till the fight boarded at 1am. Let me tell you that was not much fun as at that time there is not much spotting to do...
Next flights: AF ORY-TLN-ORY; CDG-BOD-CDG; KL CDG-AMS-ADD-AMS-CDG; AF CDG-ATL; DL ATL-MSY-ATL; AF ATL-CDG

If it's weather related, ground handling problem, fueling delay problem I sit by and watch the world go by. The world, that is, being pax freaking out, asking a thousand questions, pax agents answering "we don't have any more info at this time", other pax getting liquored up and throwing up on each other and laughing. That's if the wait is in the terminal. On board it would be pax freaking out, asking a thousand questions, flight attendants answering "we don't have any more info at this time", other pax getting liquored up and throwing up on each other and laughing. In either case, if the A/C went mechanical (of course my company, 'cause I'm too cheap to pay full fare) I ask if I can help.

30 minutes to me barely qualifies as a delay because that is short enough that they can usually catch up in flight. Thats enough time to grab some starbucks make a few phone calls to people I will be out of touch with for the next few weeks. Try a 7-8 hour delay due to fog in the SNN airport. I learned to play pinoucle. Watched a movie on my laptop. Ate. Shopped around duty free. Chatted with friends.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!

The last time I was seriously delayed was in Sacramento in August. I spent most of the time at the airport bar drinking Samual Adams Black Lager. After three 32oz glasses, I was feeling well enough to face any delay!  Wink

I go crazy, miss out on my appointments, rant at the ground crew who don't have anything to do with it.
Then I start flaming my fellow passengers for this flight and afterwards commit suicide.

Alternatively, I just wait until we actually depart.....

When I had to change planes at LAX after a 12 hour flight somewhere in the evening local time, the only thing during the 1 hour delay I could think of was sleeping. In any other case it will be plane spotting, walk around in the terminal, surfing the internet/e-mailing or look around in the shops.

Sit in the lounge drinking the complimentary wine, and nibbling at the food and using the Internet. Also, chat to my lounge companions. If I'm on the plane and we're delayed and haven't left the gate, I chat to the F/As.

All depends on how long the delay is , if it is announced when I am in the QF lounge I stay there and eat and drink until called, if I am at the gate and the delay is long enough I will go outside for a smoke and maybe return to the lounge. If overseas and no QF or partner lounge is available I will just walk around the airport and have a good look around. done this last year at Ams when my Easyjet flight to Glasgow was delayed by 3 hrs . this in my opinion is one of the best airports in the world to get a delay at as there is enought to keep you occupied .
thank god i was not born a bird. this type of flying is much better

Nothing-we're never late. One of the benefits of private aircraft ownership, right up there with going to the airport we want to use-not the one Delta/insert your airline here wants you to use.

Actually check that ...

Since I'm a nervous flier, I dislike delays. They just gives me more time to sit there and obsess over what could go wrong or what might happen.

I prefer to just get in the plane, get up in the air and worry about it then.

I was delayed at ROC once for 7 1/2 hours and that was when each concourses had their own security so there was no food options since the 2 stands they had then closed at 5pm. So after walking up and down Concourse A about 1 Billion times to watch people board US flights, I just sat there. Then on top of that we had an extended flight time of 2 hours instead of a 45 minute flight because we were trying to avoid the storm of NYC. But that is a whole different story. But of course after my experience they made one security check point and added more food places  Angry  Angry .
