Thai Airways Or Royal Brunei?

Fri Jan 13, 2006 12:12 pm

I'm traveling to the Philippines next month from AKL and the cheapest options are BI and TG.
TG gives me the almost not to resist possibility to fly the A346 and collect miles on my star FFP and have the option to do a few days Bangkok. BKK-MNL will be a 777.
If I fly Royal Brunei I fly the boring 763ER to Brunei and the 320 to MNL but save 200 NZ$ and have the possibility to stay a few days in Brunei which I think can be interesting. No miles coming my way.

Any feedback to help me making a decision?

With BI being only 200 NZD (= 140 USD) cheaper than TG, the difference in accomodation costs "Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) vs. Bangkok (Krung Thep)" will eat up this initial advantage pretty fast ...

Bangkok´s weather will still be okay in February, as monsoon season is still two months away (temp´s will be in the "hot" region anyhow ...).
In case you´ve never been to either city, Bangkok will offer more places to visit. Plus it will be one of your last chances to use "old" Don Muang Airport.

With these things to consider, I definitely would go for TG via BKK.

The choice isnt easy. You wont have many chances to fly on Royal Brunei.
On the other hand flying the 346 and getting miles is still worth the difference in price. AKL - BKK - MNL must bring in a nice mileage.

Staying in BKK also is a bit more interesting than in Bandar Seri Begawan (code is BWN).

I had a flight with Royal Brunei (BI) from BKK to BWN and onwards to BKI. I loved it as it was just freaking exotic. they darkend the plane before take of and started a prayer on the IFE. with a very dark, hollow voice: allahu akbar, allahu akbar, etc... there was one line saying " give us a good journey and if we dont reach our destination it was fate..."

well, I would go for TG, as I have already been on BI and never on a 346. But its up to you. Have a great trip!

Quoting Macc (Reply 2):
Bandar Seri Begawan (code is BWN).

"Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB)

I wasn´t referring to the IATA-code but to the usual abbreviation of Bandar Seri Begawan - and didn´t notice that BSB is Brasilia´s IATA code ...  Smile

Cheers for the feedback! Still hard to make a choice though.

I'm interested but our company's employees don't get any staff travel benefits. Not even from our own customers. I checked that last week. Sometimes some of the airlines we service have promo's for agents but not when I'm going.

I've flown on Royal Brunei once, LHR-DXB and will never fly them again.

They are for want of a better word, shyte.

B763's, with awful interiors, no alcohol served onboard (although you can drink your own), awful food, crap movies, and every so often an arrow flashing up on the tv monitors (no PTV's) showing the way to Mecca !!!. I was so bored I spent most of the 7 hour flight looking out of the window.

Wouldn't touch them again.

OK, I'm pleased to say I choose TG. They fly daily which makes me able to stay in the Philippines as long as possible.

Thank you all for your feedback!
