The Plane You Teethed On And The One You'll Die To

Fri Jan 13, 2006 8:05 am

What are the planes that gave you your first inspiration to become an aviation enthusiast. Which planes have you paid close attention to the development of and final production, and which airplane can you speculate will be the last one off the line when you die?

Personally,

My plane that got me interested:

The Delta Lockheed L-1011.

My first Widebody: Delta 767-200

My first "From Dream to Reality" plane: The 777

And finally, the last plane I'll see: The Successor to the 777/A380

The plane that I was riding when I decided I wanted to become an airline pilot was a DC-8. Never became an airline pilot but I was only 5 when I rode that DC-8.

I love the DC-10...probably my favorite plane as a kid.

The 777 will always have a place for me, though...from the rollout ceremony to watching the first flight...love it.

The old UAL 727's. The white paint scheme. What a beautiful bird.

I don't care what direction aviation is going, it has been pretty cool so far. Smile

There are 3 planes that inspired me, all 747s. They are United's 747s in the Saul Bass (white with colored stripes) scheme, PanAm and Lufthansa.

My first widebody was a Continental DC-10-10 out of ONT

My from dream to reality plane is hard to tell, probably the 744 more than anything

I hope the last plane I see is still a 747.

The two planes that lured me into aviation were the 727 and MD-80. I still get giddy when I ear the whine of the 727 around the airport, or look up to see one on final....too bad they are disappearing so quickly.

First widebody: Eastern A300

Dream to reality aircraft were the A320 & 777

And who knows where aviation will go in the future...I just hope I'm around to see it!

Concorde. I remember seeing it in a magazine, featured in a Benson & Hedges advertisement. My parents were very concerned that their 4 year old had a cigarette advertisement taped to the wall next to his bed. The interest grew from there.

Bit less inspiring now that there are none flying. And I think in my teens was more excited about B747

The planes that first inspired me:

The planes that inspired me:

707 - My uncle taught me how to draw it
727 - The first plane that I flew on - and it went into service the day I was born.
747 - I was so excited to see it in second grade I left my classroom to see it fly overhead. (And I was present at the 744 premiere event)

My first widebody: A300B2K

From dream to reality: B757/B767

The last plane I hope to see (although not likely): A true successor to the Concorde.

If it doesn't have props it ain't nuthin.

Convair 440 for sure, Martin 404 a close second.

Had a ride on a Constellation one time in revenue service back around 1967. Good stuff there, but the CV440 really does it for me.

Have to chime in on this one.

First flight was an Eastern DC-8 JFK-HOU (I think) in 1968. I was only 3 at the time so I don't remember much about it.

The one that started it all was an Eastern 727-200 in 1972. EWR-IAH. I was 7 at the time and I remember walking into the cabin and thinking that I was going on some kind of spaceship. It is an image that will be burned into my brain until the day I die. We sat all the way at the back of the plane with the engine right outside the window. We stopped at DUL enroute due to fuel issues and I will never forget hearing that reverse thrust. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

My first widebody was a Delta L-1011 in November 1977. EWR-ATL-IAH. FL#1115. Sat in coach but in front of the #3 engine, so I got to hear that widebody whine on takeoff from inside. I thought that was the coolest thing ever too.
Flew on my first DC-10 on the same trip. National 182. IAH-MSY-TPA enroute to what was them FMY. (Fort Meyers)

Planes I hope to be on before the end? Well, the 777 is a must, and hopefully the A-380, or what ever else the future may hold.

Planes that got me interested? The Hughes Airwest "Flying Bananas" going in and out of Burbank back in the day. For some reason, the idea of an all yellow airplane really struck a chord with this kid. After that, I was hooked.

First remembered flight: UA routing LAX-DEN-FWA in the early eighties. LAX to DEN was a 727, but I don't remember what the DEN-FWA flight was. I would guess it was probably another 727. Someone here probably knows what plane UA used to put on that route.

First widebody? A UA 747 routing LAX-ORD while in utero in the mid seventies. My mother was sure it was a 747 because she said it was a continuation of a flight from Hawaii and Mahi-Mahi was served. Apparently the plane hit severe turbulence and my old man got really airsick. The first widebody I remember was a DL 767 (can't remember which series) routing CVG-LAX. Happy to say I did get to fly the L-1011 once (also DL equipment) from ATL-LAX.

Favorite plane: I would have to say the 757, although I think the 777 is a magnificent machine. It amazes me the 777 can squeeze so much range out of just two engines (and I did got to fly one DFW-LAX on AA in first class. Quite an experience for someone who usually sits towards the back of the bus)...

Thats a good question, because I have been one since I was 2 years old. My parents told when I was 2, I pointed at every airplane and got excited about them, and still do to this day, but much more covertly and without pointing as not to appear like a "weirdo". The plane that I can remember that got me "inspired" was not an airliner, but a bomber. The B-52, still my favorite.

Quoting UAL747 (Thread starter):

F-22 (as late as they are) and the A380.

I plan on dying at a ripe old age of 100 years old in 2080, and the plane will be yet another modification of the B-52, and some hypersonic airliner that can fly at mach 10.

I was waiting for another crinkly to show up! Now I won't be so embarrassed to tell you my first was a Canadair C-4 "Argonaut" (check my handle) of BOAC. I was three years old, and because the captain allowed me to spend what seemed like a very lo-o-o-ong time up in the sharp end, where he pointed out loads of things I can't remember (but I do recall the navigator's maps--heap of 'em).

The result was that the very same plane got me started on this lifelong passion. I think about that captain often, and how he gave me such a crucially formative experience. BTW, thanks to my mother's diary, I can tell you the tail number: G-ALHN. It was named "Argosy". Never underestimate your mother.

Never flew in a Connie (my biggest regret) but did manage eleven memorable flights in Boeing Stratocruisers. Deep down, that old duchess still has my heart--although it sometimes fights for it with the Bristol Britannia, the Sud Caravelle and the Vickers VC10. The eccentric DH Trident was impossible not to like, too.

In case anyone thinks I've just emerged from a primaeval swamp, let me add that the 727 has always been a big favourite, especially the early -100 series. The DC-9, too. Right now I'm trying to cop as many DC-9 flights as I can (guess which airline?) before it fades away...

And the last one: probably an elderly 787 or 380. But if I could choose where I was going to breathe my last, it would be on almost any heavy piston type left around. Since I don't intend that to depart before 2050, it's a tall order...
