Which Carriers 1st To Fail Due To Bird Flu?

Mon Jan 16, 2006 9:15 pm

With more bird flu cases in Turkey, Israel & now Indonesia, air travel as we know it may slow significantly in certain parts of the world. Who will be effecteted most?

Which airlines will fail 1st?

Will airlines stop flying to huge airports, in Europe, Asia & USA & either find alternatives or not fly at all into crtain countries?

What's everyone's view on the future if bird flu gets a lot worse?

Take a look at the SARS crises several years ago for what happened there. Many flights from Europe and North America to certain countries in Asia, as well as within Asia were badly hurt with some minor airline failures. Many a 747 flew with a tiny fraction of the regular numbers of pax and many airlines took huge financial hits with most surviving.
It is a little too early to determine what will happen to airlines from this 'bird flu' as it would have to mutate into a form that is easliy transmissable from person to person. Currently it seems to be mostly from those whom have close contacts with live chickens but who knows when it will make that leap and the risk increases.

None. It's ridiculous hype just like SARS and West Nile.

Sorry, you're all such genius's !!!

Any airline worth their salt, would have contigency plans in place NOW.

Unfortunately, it's spreading. ( in Turkey people are hiding their chickens so they won't be destroyed !!! ) World Health Org stated worried about lack of action in turkey. Some baorders have ben closed, but to our knowledge, no airports closed, flights cancelled or flights not allowed into a country like UK or USA.

Alll it takes is one person, (with strain which can transfer from person to person) to fly into say New York & within 24 hours every city in USA will have some sufferers, mostly the young & the old.

We not doom sayers, but just amazed at lack on action by authorities in turkey, Isreal, Indonesia (remember 2 of these are 3rd world countries)

Don't think that any airline will go bankrupt as long as H5N1 will not be transmitted from human to human. Airtravel will not drop significantly as long as there is not inter-human transmission.

Rather see it from the positive side:
finally we will see a welcome change from the usual: "Chicken or Pasta?"

Dig in, guys!

Well, NZ will shut its borders quick-sharp if it starts human-human transfer so maybe Air NZ will pack up and go home early on.

CX suffered a good bit during SARS, but they survived. I'm sure they can do the same if Avian Flu shows up
