BA & QF Economy 747 Seat

Tue Jan 17, 2006 10:53 pm

Hello.

I'm flying LHR - SYD - LHR next month with British Airways on the way out and Qantas coming back. I have been on seatguru.com and have booked myself seat 70K for the return journey. I couldn't pick one for the outward BA flight as the website told me the designated number of seats available for allocation before check-in had been used up, so I'll just have to wait until 24 hours before the flight and check-in online and hope I can still pick a good one.

I can see my seat on this pic:

The PTV looks annoyingly positioned!

Not sure which to pick on the BA flight though (if I have much of a choice):

I'm aware the cabin has been refurbished since but assume (perhaps wrongly) the seat layout remains pretty much the same.

50K looks like a good seat but the rows of 2 behind that look crap, some appear not to have a window view and look too far from the wall, difficult for sleeping.

Anyone have any suggestions for a particularly good (or bad) seat for either of these flights? I wouldn't normally bother posting but it is LONG flight!

Expect a full trip report!

No, the seating layout has not changed, still 3-4-3 layout.

I'm afraid I can't help you much on seating sujestions though, other than take a look at www.seatguru.com

I did exactly the same trip a few months ago. Out on BA seat 48K had no probs with it. Much preferred the Qantas service though

Interesting thread as I'm also flying to Australia but not until October and November. I'm doing MAN-LHR-BKK-SYD-MEL-SIN-LHR-MAN with the LHR-BKK and MEL-SIN-LHR sectors being with QF and the BKK-SYD sector with BA.

I've flown BA long haul before and was just interested in the comment in the last reply saying he much preferred the Qantas service. In what way did it differ to that of BA? Is the QF IFE on demand? And will I be using the old BKK Don Muang airport or will the new one be open then?

Regards

If you take aisle seats 73B or 73J on the Qantas 747-400 at the back there is a good chance 73A or 73K will not be occupied unless the flight is full. On the Qantas seat map on the Qantas site you will see a note that states shows 73A and 73K are normally allocated last. Only if full flight.

I have sat in 73J three times on flights across Australia. I like being able to get up and stand (you will actually be at Door5Right!) or able to get up and walk abouit during the flight. To my mind this is preferable on a long-haul flight.

I think you'll find seat 70K is also a long way from the window. This might make it more difficult to sleep but you get tons of extra space. I flew in this seat on CX which has essentially the same seats. Firstly you can use the space underneath 69K for your carry on stuff without losing any leg space ( as 70K is actually the seat behind 69J, which is als why there is no PTV in the back of 69K )so you don't have to keep getting stuff out of the overheads. As you are away from the window you can look out of 3 or 4 of them so you get a better view. Also I found i could turn my whole body 90 degrees and sit with my knees facing the window which made a refreshing change as they say. Sleeping isn't such a problem as the adjustable headrests support your head very well.
Overall, apart from exit row seats, I think the window seat in the first row of 2 at the rear of the 747 is best for a long trip as you've got a lot more personal space. I expect the BA seats in this spot are the same.

Thanks everyone! Any comments on the IFE? I'm particularly interested in the skymap, as this combined with looking out the window is far more entertaining than any film!
