The Most Child Friendly Airline Out There...

Sat Jan 21, 2006 12:41 pm

I am fairly new to this forum. However, I know that airlines vary when it comes to long overseas flights when you have a child (or more) of your own seated next to you. I would need, and would be equally grateful of your opinion on this matter. I have three fairly young ones, and we travel to Europe about twice every year.

I have chosen to fly with BA most of the time. Not because of my own needs (even though they're simply just great), but because of how they take care of their young travelers in particular. This airline is simply amazing when it comes to kids.

My kids are excited about their next trip over coming up soon. Me too!!

Any parents out there with similar experiences flying with other airlines that you could recommend? We're just looking for some variation, or flying through another hub (my kids can proclaim to have been to another country that way).  Smile

Thanks in advance for your input.

By the way, we're heading for OSL.

Quite a few years back  Smile I flew DL alone as a kid several times. The FAs were extremely helpful, and always attended to my needs, and of course checked up on me far more often than they did on the adult passengers. In addition, many times they engaged me in quite interesting conversation! I don't know how their service has changed over the last 10 years though.

Ek used to be pretty good, they used to take photo's of kids on board with polaroid camera  Smile

I havn't seen EK do this for a few years now though  Sad

TG is also pretty good, they provide kids with games and toys  Smile

I also remember BA used to be quite good with kids  Smile

AF and KL are both good as well, from my experience as 5 till 10 year old. They gave me these puzzles, special meals, drawings etc. GA's good as well, but you're not going near CGK though  Smile
I'm not sure wheter they're still doing this though (AF,KL)

We have a 2 year old daughter, who we've taken on 5 long haul trips to Asia. The last 3 were with ANA simply because they are so great with our daughter. The number one reason I recommend a Japanese carrier is because the majority of the passengers are of course Japanese, and they treat all kids with the upmost respect, they never complain about a crying kid. We've never been made to feel uncomfortable for anything. On our last flight, during the after dinner sleeptime, the flight attendants even put down a blanket on the floor of the back galley and sat and played with our daughter for a good half an hour... they're the best in my opinion. However not sure of the routes and availability to Europe. But it's worth checking into, I assure you.  Smile Good luck, as it's never easy when traveling with young ones.

Cheers!

I flew DL many times alone while I was a child and the FA's were always very nice, usually bumped me to First Class and got anything I wanted. After the flight my parents/grandparents always had to sign for me and show picture ID to have me released into their custody.

Thanks for everybody's input. I just booked a trip with BA again. Last time we flew with them, they even managed to arrange a "birthday" party for my youngest daughter because it was her real birthday that day. Never will I forget how well the BA crew took care of us. Even the Captain congratulated her over the PA system as we were parking at the gate at LHR. One unspeakable honor! She has a teddy bear and a card signed by all of the crew members in her possession today. These are some of her most treasured memories in life.

I'm simply too happy with BA, and I think they simply deserve my repeat business.

I am sure there are so many good ones out there, but BA simply has impressed the heck out of us!

From my experience as a teenager, having grown up travelling out of HKG by myself or with my younger siblings SQ and CX have been the best on long haul and intra-asia flights.

I have had one memorable experience with QF. This was in 2001 when I was the only UM on the plane. I was travelling from BNE to HKG and they let me see the cockpit (post 9/11). Since QF had no PTVs I asked if I could do anything. I then got to help them hand out drinks and I also just talked in the galley, this was all quite good to pass time  Smile .

Cheers

I would always avoid AA with kids they were awful.

we did fly with BA recently, didnt get any colouring in books etc going (I didnt think to ask and we had our own etc) but coming back we had activity packs and top trump cards for the boys and a little electronic game for my little one.

I would say that the meals for kids were awful, just a veggie pasta...my kids dont eat junk but I do have to say it would have been a favourable option to have some chicken nuggets etc purely as I know they would have grabbed her interest and she would have eaten something. What they served looked like a pile of cat sick to be honest.

I wish all airlines would create a larger WC, trying to change a kid on the small tables in there is a nightmare but trying to put a kid on a potty in the loo on a plane is an even bigger nightmare. I really wonder how disable people really cope in these so maybe one bigger one per plane would be a start....although am I right in thinking the airbusa340 maybe has a larger one?

I always had good service with NW when my boys were younger (they're now 6 and 8). Even gave out little DC-10-40 and DC-9-30 cards on the flights served by those types--made the boys happy!

US allowed the boys to sit in the cockpit...I have a great pic of them in the pilot and co's seats on an A320.

Avoid UA (unless you're on a 777 and need the PTVs)....last time we tried, (kids were still under 5) UA only allowed pre-boarding for First/Premier members.

i see what you're saying but if an airline is child-friendly, the crew will do a good job in keeping the kids quiet and entertained (games, ice cream etc...) so all pax are satisfied. basically every post here has named a different airline as being child-friendly, suggesting that, ultimately, it comes down to the attitude of the crew. from what i've read, airlines such as nh and cx are pretty good at this.

I think the most child friendly airline is CO. I have noticed the FAs go out of their way on many occasions bringing in between snacks and toys to the children. The same with DL. On the old Swiss Air, I saw a FA take a crying infant in her arms and rock him back to sleep while the mother was in the restroom.

The most unfriendly airlines: LH and Aeroflot. Aeroflot takes the cake though.

I have to agree with the person that spoke about ANA. They are awesome!!

I always remember DL being extremely child-friendly. I imagine that things have probably changed quite a bit over the years! Other than that, BA is really good as well.

I'll second that!

All comes back to the fact of childhood innocence (huge cliche!)

When I was a kid, I flew a lot domestic on SK without my parents. They treated me very well. When not serving the other passengers, the FAs used to sit down next to me and make sure that I was alright and stuff. At ARN, they have (I'm guessing it's still there) an area for kids travelling without parents where they showed movies and had a bunch of toys. I rarely spent time in that area though, I used to walk around and look at all the planes  Smile

Back to the original question, I have had good experiences on domestic SK, but haven't tried them internationally.

In the USA, I would say Southwest.

The only thing they lack is a baby-changing table in the lav.

Even the little 50-seat Pinnacle CRJs have a changing table in them!

I no longer fly WN though!

When i was kid ,i use to travel alone from BEY to EZE onboard ME and AF.I have very good memories from both airlines regarding catering ,toys and the genuine smile of the crew. Now as an adult and father for 3 kids , living in Norway,i find SK to be a wonderful airline to deal with kids, they provide toys and goodies with a friendly smile

Isn't that the truth....imagine a thread of the flights with the most obnoxious adults stories...that would be a very long thread.

I would definitely say that America West, aka America Worst, aka Always Waiting is not a child friendly airline. I remember some time ago they sent travel alone kids to a different city other than their intended city. It just so happened that the intended city was SAN. This did not happen just once but twice in a one months period. It was sad. Apparently they didn't have a person waiting for the kids at the transfer city and the kids got on a wrong plane.
