Who Will Be The Next SkyTeam Member

Sat Jan 21, 2006 1:40 pm

Given the recent threads about Star, I would like to get input on who everyone can see joining up with SkyTeam in the coming months.

Personally I can see Virgin coming on as they are already making relationships with NW and DL and I believe CO has some kind of agreement in place as well. This would give Virgin more traffic and the SkyTeam a LHR link from the USA as well.

What is everyone else's thoughts on SkyTeam and there next member?

Believe it or not, I know SkyTeam is trying to add Aeroflot as a member. I don't know where it stands, though.

I have heard rumors of that myself. I had forgot about them. Would be a interesting link for SkyTeam.

Not really a rumor; pretty much fact although it is held up by the idiotic non-completion of SVO-3 due to incompetence, and foot-dragging. DME is a shining polar opposite in this regard.

Copa, TAROM, MEA, China Southern, Aeroflot, and Kenya Airways (and I think I left out one) are all planning to join skyteam. Copa, TAROM, MEA and Kenya will all be associate members, while China Southern and Aeroflot will be full members.

What the hell's the matter with Malaysian? Why won't they decide - one way or the other? There really is a big gaping hole in Skyteam's South-East Asian network that can be filled perfectly.

I've heard something on those lines as well. But I don't understand why they would want to stop MH. It's not like they have someone else in mind.

Bloody Frogs (and I'm allowed to call them that because I am partly one).

I agree , they are in a great location with a fantastic airport with almost limitless expansion capacity - they are far enough away from SEL to be complementary rather than competitive to existing member KE - the only reasons I can think of for AF to object to them are

1/ 34" seat pitch in Y ...perhaps AF are scared that once people experience this they will expect other Skyteam members to match it

2/ Aesthetics -the MH male cabin attendant uniforms are truly hideous ... two slightly different (and hideously clashing ) shades of green ... in fact the more I think about it the more certain I am that this must be the reason .... hey, we are talking the French here  Wink

I've never flown MH, but your description sounds perfectly frightful. Vomit!

I am now convinced that has got to be the reason. And, in that case, I fully support AF.  Wink

Perhaps ot of security reasons...?
I heard some time ago that MH got banned or warned from more than one EU/US airport for arriving short of fuel and declaring emergencies.
Can anyone confirm that?

SU will be a big asset to ST. Entering into Russian Market and using Moscow for east and west connections will definitely benefit ST.
SU has strong code share agreements with almost all of the ST members on flights in and out of Moscow.

SU've been desperately trying to get into the ST, past three years but several issues are holding SU back from it.

Two major issues are:

SVO 3 (which god knows when it will get opened). SVO 1 and SVO 2 are so old, dark and soviet that members of ST are scared to make SVO a hub. SVO 2 is getting a face lift now but adding couple of lights and flats screens will not solve the problem.

Number two is electronic ticketing. SU is not able to handle e-ticketing yet, although is working hard on the system now. Problem is also Russian Tax code does not recognize e-tickets (don't ask me why, I have no idea), although as of 2007 IATA forces all the airlines to switch to e-ticketing, so e-ticketing issue will be solved this year.

Just as the French believe they own the EU, AF probably feels they own the SkyTeam as well.  Angry

Not really sure about that. Russian market - given its size and low purchase power is well covered already. SE Asia/Australia is much more important and MH would be almost pefect choice.

I've heard that Air France is opposing Malaysia Airlines' entry as it wants either SQ or TG to leave Star and join Skyteam instead. MAS was actually poised to join the KLM-NWA World Reliability Group way before Skyteam came into being and I gather KLM is keen to see MAS get on-board as they have successfully operated joint-services using AMS and KUL as hubs for quite a few years now.

About their green uniforms - whilst the girls still look great (as many still feel they wear the original 'kebaya', unlike SQ's westernised (Pierre Cardin) version), the boys really are way overdue a makeover. Plans for a new uniform with the unveiling of their 'Experience Redefined' programme unfortunately seems to have been shelved due to MAS' haemorrhaging accounts.

Anyway - with regards to Virgin joining Skyteam - I'm not so sure about VS in Skyteam since their majority stake holder is now Singapore Airlines!!!

Ok, so basically this guy (AF/SkyTeam) is refusing this hot chick (MH) who is virtually offering him to go to bed with him because he wants either one of these really hot chicks (SQ + TG) who are currently dating other guys (STAR). Meanwhile he is considered as a loser and chances are he might end up jerking-off forever.

Tunisair and Royal Air Maroc are seeking entry into Skyteam as associate members. TU has strong ties with AF and UX.
Next flights : BRU-ZRH-CAI (LX)/ BRU-FCO-TLV (AZ)

Air Europa has agreement with Air France in all its routes from Spain, with OK to PRG, with CO from MAD to EWR and in the near futurefom BCN to EWR.

I think there's, after SU, the first candidate to be another Skyteam member.

And what about TAM?

TAM was invited several times to join SkyTeam but decided to go solo. With its international expansion it will need to join an alliance very soon, and the decision will go to either OW or Sky.

Personally I would love to see TAM in SkyTeam, but TAM's dependence on AA's MIA hub makes it closer to OW...

You've got the point.
AF is trying to get TG into ST and prefers TG to MH.
AFKL and ST's leaders are trying to build a different alliance. Not just simply adding members like Star is doing, but building something coherent and complementary.
Having TG & SQ in the same alliance is ridiculous, they are among the biggest competitors in the region and are supposed to be partners...
It would be like having BA & AF or BA & LH in the same alliance in Europe.

Issues with Air Europa situation....

These are the current UX codeshares on other airlines
UX017/018 Continental Airlines (MAD-EWR)
UX3051/3052 Cubana de Aviación (HAV-SCU)
UX3076-3077 Iberia (MAD-UIO-GYE)
UX3081-3089 Tunisair (MAD-TUN and BCN-TUN)
UX3091-3096 China Eastern (PVD-PEK)
UX3001-3030 Air France (Spain-Paris on Britair and Regional)
UX3101-3199 Continental Airlines (EWR-24 destinations in US)
UX3301/3302 Malev (MAD-BUD)
UX3311-3396 Portugalia (Spain-LIS)
UX3400-3499 Air France (MAD and BCN - CDG, TLS, BOD and LYS)
UX3715-3716 Smart wings (MAD-PRG)

And have reciprocal FF agreement with
CO OnePass
NW World Perks
Aeropostal
Malev
Portugalia
and previous to the merger with KLM Flying Dutchman.. Now Flying Blue Member can earn and redeem on UX flights but Air Europa fidelitas can only redeem on AF-KLM flights

Although they know they'll be in as associate member, they have signed in november a Block-space c/s with Smart Wings for the MAD-PRG (3x weekly). The natural agreement would have been with CSA but they have a similar agreement with IB (CSA metal, IB code).....

That implies CSA moving to the new T4 in MAD because of this agreement (and handling)

Similar case with Tarom, going to T4 because of codeshare and handling

So that complicates a little the "under one roof" strategy in MAD, but it is sure they will enter. The tough part will be for sure the merger of FFP Fidelitas into Flying Blue

I could easily see Air Europa joining in the SkyTeam Alliance.

I also agree that TAM should have joined when SkyTeam offered. Maybe next time they will come to a agreement
