Traveling With Sri Lankan Airlines

Tue Jan 24, 2006 10:18 pm

Hello,

I would like to go to Colombo in June. My travel agency proposes me to travel with Sri Lankan Airlines. Is there anyone who has some feedback of this company? Service and safety wise?

Thank you,

Dino

Well you can always check www.aviation-safety.net

However, I do think that they have had any safety related crashes since 1992. That was as Air Lanka.

I've flown UL 6 times so far - 3x on 343, 3x on 332 - and I can say that it was, overall, very good. You should have no problems whatever. It is, without any doubt, the best or second best (after 9W) in the Indian Subcontinent. However, I believe that it has faced quite severe problems recently, for instance due to the tsunami, etc., so I hope that this hasn't adversely affected it.

They are owned by Emirates so I think it should be a good experience.
Have a read of some reviews:
http://www.airlinequality.com

They operate modern aircraft, A340s, A330s, A320s with PTVs in each seat:

= Right on the mark. Hands down, the second best in the Indian sub-continent after 9W. UL is a magnificient airline and much better than semi-parent EK. Trust me, their service is significantly better than almost all European carriers. Finally, any airline that puts a brave face, smiles, and does their job in an extremely difficult national and operating market wins my respect hands down.

Fly them. You won't regret.

Cheers,
A.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's better than EK in terms of EK's new IFE and brilliant seats (unless UL has both now), although EK's older IFE and not-so-good chairs (on its 332 machines) are as good as, or worse than, UL's. I can't remember whether the IFE is the same on UL and is the old system with EK.

= Well, I would  Smile - crew on UL is better than EK. In terms of IFE and upgraded seats, I agree with you - new EK product is better than old EK. But then again, on routing to CMB, I am sure EK does not give the new product. Hence, a comparison with the old.

Great airline, flew them many times when I lived in Colombo. I was upgraded by a purser once upon taking my assigned seat in economy class, probably in a case of 'reverse racism' - if that's the word ("sir, there is much more space for you in the front!"). Their new Airbus fleet certainly has all the modern amenities, particularly in Biz-class

1) I have traveled the LHR-CMB,ZRH-MLE-CMB,ZRH-CMB and the reverse many times with UL. Also done it with EK however I found UL superior in service and comfort. I recommend them to everyone who asks.

2) Safety is not a concern as they fly a new Airbus fleet of A340s and A330s for long haul. They have yet to loose an aircraft in flight. The incidents listed to them were part of collateral damage due to a terrorist attack at CMB. This is obviously a freak event that can happen anywhere in the current times we live in.

3) Sri lankan is merely the new branding of an airline that is almost 50 years old. They were known as Air Ceylon, Air Lanka and now...Sri Lankan. This new identity has been very very successful

4) EK management runs the operation but does not own the majority of the airline. The Sri Lanka gov has the majority stake. The sale of 40% shares to EK was merely a financial deal in privatization of a national airline with a win-win situation for both sides.

Have a nice trip!

Good choice!

I would have also rather gone on UL than EK. Flew UL several times in the past and the are at least as good as EK if not better:

Air Ceylon is a different company and has absolutely nothing to do with SriLankan or AirLanka. AirLanka was founded in 1979 and SriLankan Airlines had it's 25 anniversary in 2004.

Business Class should have been upgraded already a few years ago but if not mistaken, it still contains the same seats as on EK 332. The only difference is, that with EK you have a 2-3-2 abrest and with UL it's only a 2-2-2.
