Could You Survive At Your Airport?

Tue Jan 24, 2006 4:37 am

Recently watching "The Teminal" again for the umpteenth time, got me wondering, would you be able to survive that long at your airport? Me- In MKG, no, there are no shops, and one little cafe, in GRR, maaybe a little while, there is a food court, and a gift shop where you can buy things. What do you think? Would you survive?

Put me a year in AMS and I'd survive perfectly.
My day would look like this:
7 AM: Wake up from some remote area in the waiting lounges above B-pier. They have excellent chairs there, that are almost like flat-beds, and they are not in a Premium Area, which I assume I cannot excess in your "The Terminal" example.
7.15: Take a shower in Terminal 3; that would cost me EUR 12,50 but I would get the towel and shampoo, those might come in handy sometime. (I'd store them somewhere in my free luggage trolley - needless to say I pretend it's my like having an own Mercedes. Well, -ehh- sort of).
8.00: Why not having a champagne breakfast at "Bubbles" in the B pier. OK, it might be slightly over budget, but sipping champagne while reading the morning papers (for free: read and replace them  Smile) is worth the money.
9.00: Check the Internet what's going on that day - check A.net and arrivals/departures - .
10.00: Ok, time for a little morning exercise: start at the end of B pier and walk all the way to the end of the F-pier. It not only takes a while but it's almost half a marathon.
11.00: After my exercise, I need to relax a little. Why not visit the Masterpieces in the Rijksmuseum, for free. When you have nothing to do and nowhere to go you could spent hours watching Rembrandt's paintings.
12.00: Lunchtime, maybe I check the ATM of ABN AMRO bank inside the terminal, when I'm lucky there's some cash left, and I grab I nice baguette at "Boulangerie Paul", B terminal again. While enjoying my baguette I see planes taking off outside. Wait I minute: I happen to live in an airport!
13.00: So, this if life! At the roof of Schiphol airport I catch a breath of fresh air, while enjoying a nice view over the platforms and runways. I can even see Amsterdam on the horizon, if I only could go there...
15.00: Enough fresh air, time to get warm at "Murphy's Irish Pub" at the D-pier. The Guinness tastes great, and I meet some people that invite me to have another beer in the Heineken Grand Café "The Palace". I'd love to, but too much beer gets you into trouble. I'll go shopping instead, gaze at the new gadgets at the Electronics shop. Or just take it easy and read a book or two in one of the bookstores.
18.00: After shopping - and there's a lot to see at AMS - I'm hungry. The "Bubbles" place is a bit over the top, so I'd rather check "Shirasagi Sushi Bar".
19.30: What to do after dinner? I might want to check my luck at Holland Casino - maybe I can win enough money to buy a ticket out, or just for having another shower tomorrow. Anyway, put all my money on Red, closed my eyes. Doubled it. Did it once again. Eyes closed. Red. Walked out as a rich men, with 60 euro's instead of 20.
21.00: After my gain in the Casino, why not having a beer in "The Palace" after all. Just grab another book at one of the book stores ("yeah I promise to return it later!") and watch the evening flights come and go.
23.00: It's time for a evening stroll, probably there is a LCC being pushed back from the B-pier still, or I check the Internet again.
Midnight: tired of another day in a buzzing place, I decide to head back to my flat-bed again (with my trolley off course). For a second I believe a lady just wished me a good night.
But the only thing I hear is... "mind your step"

The constant, neverending monotony of CRJs here in CVG would drive any spotter to suicide in a matter of hours.

not much here at MDT. The gift shop and the two ,or maybe 3 eating places close by 9 or 10pm small airport, probably could not hide from security all night.

HKG: Oh definitely. Lots of shops, excellent choices of food, shower facilities. Lots of heavies to look at.

SFO (assuming I am stuck in Intl terminal): No. Lack of shops, lack of intl flights. Hardly any view of the outside.

LHR (airside): Will probably survive. There are enough shops to keep me entertained. Several game terminals. Spotting (if allowed in airside) would be fun.

DXB, HKG, SIN, any of those and I'd be fine. My luck, I'd get stuck in ACC. I wouldn't want to spend 4 hours there, much less weeks!!

BNA: You'd starve from 8PM to 7AM when EVERYTHING in the terminal is closed, even though there are flight departures until 9 and arrivals until after midnight... oh, and the first departure is around 5 AM...

Plus, the only food is snack bars and ONE actual restaurant OUTSIDE security, so, no chance of getting that...

Here at ISP it would be a long struggle to survive, after mainline Aircraft pulled out of here 5 years ago it would be annoying spotting the same WN planes over and over again and the occasional DL 733.

Unlike the major hubs you all talk about ISP has almost nothing, with limited food courts and no shower facilities let alone a Business Executive club I could squeak on into.

Only one snack bar the entire time and with very limited hiding space I'd be finished for.

I think one could live happily for a very long time at MSP. Needless to say, with the exception of being plagued with a endless stream of McDonalds, ORD likewise could provide a happy home.

8PM to 7AM when EVERYTHING in the terminal is closed,

the restuarant at the A-B concourse opens at 5:00AM on weekdays and serves hot breakfast sandwiches/donuts etc.

I am living in PHX now not BNA, you can totally live in that terminal.

Hmm thinking about it, you wouldn't get a chance to stay so long at EDI. The Police officers with MP5 machine guns would not care for it. LOL
But, if they were not there, you could survive for a little while, depending on how much money you had.
There is a dedicated foodcourt on the second level and that contains a Burger King, a bakery and some other assorted food places.
There is one bar I am aware of. I do not drink, so I've never paid that much attention.

However, seating outside of the departure halls is at a premium. Late at night its fine. Guess thats all you'll need.
I think there are free shower facilities in the upstairs restrooms. Can't be sure, never hung around long enough to need them.

Back in the 1980's and into the early 1990's, I remember that a number of homeless people 'lived' at inside of EWR's terminals public areas prior to the security checkpoints as well as outside the terminals and outlying areas on the airport property. Many were druggies or alcoholics, they smelled bad and made the airline customers and guests very unconfortable. Then in the early 1990's the NYNJPA started to clean out the homeless that were living in all PA facilities including at all 3 airports, the Bus Terminal, around the bridges and so on. At EWR's terminals, they removed all of the seats for wating in the main halls, many of which were taken by the homeless anyway. The monitored the restrooms more to keep them from using them for their hygene needs. They chased them out of the outside hideaways, the busted them for begging or looking for luggage carts to return for the deposit refunds. This worsened after the 1993 WTC bombing. Many were referred to social service agencies. Police were to take a no tolarance policy as to the homeless or loiterers. So I don't think one could live at any USA airport like that man without a country in that movie.

I like your story, I think I could survive in AMS as well  Smile Anyway, it would be quite difficult to go the roof of the terminal, once you are in the clean area.. And furthermore, if you can reside at the B-pier, you can leave the airport, since the B-pier is part of the Schengen area...

But still, remembering it's just a fantasy, it sounds quite nice  Smile

At SYD, you could, so long as you have plenty of money and you can stand having either Krispy Kreme or McDonald's all day ...  Smile

My pick for an airport to be "stuck" in would be AMS, SIN or HKG ...

AMEN!

That and the same DL stuff over and over again! Love it when I get to see the FedEx 727's landing though. I could live in CVG. Nice place to sleep is concourse A, where you catch the bus for concourse C, behind the elevator shaft, it is relatively dark and very quiet. Also spent the night in concoure B once with some friends where the new Starbucks is, because one girl got her drawer stuck in the register (the old Starbucks) and she wouldn't leave it so we all spent the night. We drank beer from Cheers lol and played tag in the concourse. Aahh those crazy nights.

NGO...totally..if I were not in the gate area.

I would just live at the attached hotel.
But I could do my shopping, take a hot spring bath over looking the bay, and eat any type of food I want. I could get free internet too.

There are concerts and art exhibits from time to time in the garden.
Tons of planes from RJs to 744s.
In 5 years I bet I could see RJs to A380s (FEDEX).
Tons of RJs
Tons of 737s and A320s
A couple 757s
Had full of 777s, 767s and a few A310s
2 A340s (LH and EK...from June)
bunch of MD11s (Cargo and from June Finnair)
4 or 5 A330s
4 or so 747s.

And we even get some russian stuff too from time to time.

But if I had to live in the gate area...I would shoot myself. Only a little food court, DFS, Starbucks and the lounges. Not worth it.
Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

I could probably survive at SAT, but only in T1. T2 lacks the proper amenities to make survival possible. T1 has a McDonald's, Popeye's Chicken, some restaurant, a Starbucks, some pizza place, a Blimpie Subs, a deli/coffee shop and a couple of bars. It also has a couple of gift shops, including a Swatch shop...but if it's like The Terminal, where the man lacks any serious cash flow (IIRC he only makes money on occasion by returning the carts before they cut him off?) we'd all be screwed.

You would need to have a robust budget to survive at SYD International: lots of fast food and expensive coffee places. Problem is terminal shuts just after 11pm and does not reopen until 4.30am

JNB would be okay I guess, the domestic terminal has some good shops including a couple of pubs, little boutiques and restaurants, and several banks, within the airport complex is a 5 star hotel so that would make it easy enough, and for spotting we get a good variety of aircraft from GA to 346 and anything in between! Plus with the Mr Delivery service you could call for food from almost any restaurant in the adjacent town if you get tired of the airport food!

St. Louis could work. The end of the C Concourse has the 'upstairs' portion that was used by TWA and the old international arrivals area downstairs that would make for good loft style apartment living.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

Would be fine in either AMS, SIN or HKG, prefere HKG the most to be stuck at. If you'd get bored, you can always use the train, go to the shops, watch people come and go, explore the amazing modern airport etc.

You'd probably get charged for sitting on a seat at SYD airport. So you would have no hope in lasting a long time, you would not have enough funds to suffice a couple of days with all the extra costs SACL slug you with.

Dunno about that movie, but I personally stayed in a little greek airport for about 2 days due to bad weather (long story). Other lebanese nationals were stuck for 3 days due to their passport not letting them out (and olympic not being in a hurry to put them on a plane).
There was absolutely nothing to do in the transit area, and you somehow get used to it. Basically you learn to live like a bum. I could have stayed a couple of days more I guess, as long as I knew that I'll get out some day. It is quite uncomfortable, but when they announced flights to Athens and gates started opening I was so exited at the prospect of going home (and sleeping in a bed) that if I had a tail i'd be wagging it like crazy.
I guess that's the closest I ever got to prison.
There's a man who got stuck at CDG for so long that he now lives there and doesnt want to leave anymore... what a chilling story:

DAL: No. At least not inside security. There just is not a whole lot here. If you include the entire terminal area, then maybe, especially if I could keep my ID badge. Go to the employee workout area, decent food, and sleep in any number of areas of the abandoned concourse.

DFW: Yes. Pay for shower facilities at the Admiral's Club, tons of food, newspapers lying around everywhere to keep up on events, internet access areas, and large empty areas in Terminal E to turn into sleeping quarters  Smile

Here at YWG, any sane person would walk in front of the first aircraft, and get bruised by it. Biggest we get here on a regular basis is NW DC9! Airside, prepare to live on Tim Hortons (do-able, but just). Other than that, SROFA to eat or do.

At YXY we have 1 smallish terminal that closes down around midnight and opens again at 5 or 6 in the morning. We have 1 eating place that opens around breakfast and closes I forget when probably just after supper. And we have 1 gift shop thats open around flight times. So no, I doubt one can survive on that.

BOS (Terminal E) will supply you with a lifelong supply of trashy thrillers, good cups of coffee, and general Tsao's chicken from Wok 'n Roll, but not a whole lot more. It is great for spotting, though. The airside has huge windows. However, I'd WANT to spend a while in CDG (Assuming I had infinite funds), It is a shopping goldmine!

BOS terminal b, good food, some bars and shopping, its doable, but massport sucks so theyd deport me anyways.

BDL- Id snuff it infront of the first jet id see. one dunkin doonuts a snack bar and some other random junk that closes by 10 and opens at 6am. no facalities except of lowsy "newly renovated" bathrooms that look as it if was a 6 year old with a bucket of drywall plaster and some plumbers calk.
Doors open, right hand side, next stop is Springfield.

At YHM, you'd starve... but you MIGHT get Jon Bon Jovi's signature...

I think this has the potential for a great reality show. Maybe we should stat a petition to set the next Survivor in the secure are of a CDG or LHR?
I'd watch that!

Surviving in PIT? HECK YEAH! We have the Airmall, and a bunch of restraunts (not to mention Godiva, unless they moved out, but I doubt it), and there's a post office, two spas, and the works! Big grin

The two airports i can call home;
MAN, i could easily survive here!! Forever!!
CMH, not really there is no decent place to spot, unless you are the other side of security, and even then you are limited. However the limited number of aircraft that appear here would soon make me head home. (altho i have seen Airforce 2, the B757 carrying the VP here.)

I can't be stuck at my airport, cause I work there.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!
