If You Were A Navy Pilot, Your Callsign Would Be..

Tue Jan 31, 2006 12:38 pm

If anyone in here was or is a naval aviator, what would be or what is your callsign? I'm in the process of trying to think of a good one since I'm gonna be one eventually. Have some fun and think of some good ones!

Its not exactly your choice. You will be given one! A callsign isn't just something you make up and decide, "hey I think I'll call myself XXXX." You will get it when (and you will) do something stupid, if your name goes with something, or if you look like someone/something. Usually its something that the "owner" absolutely hates. That's what makes it stick. If you go around saying "hey, I love my callsign, everybody call me this" nobody will do it and they will find something you hate.

If you are going to flight school, you will have many other things to worry about other than a callsign.

I know. It's supposed to be a fun post. Most people don't ever get to experience it, so i figured why not just have some fun and make one up for yourself. No need to get uptight.  Smile

"Itinerant"

I think that would be pretty cool.

"globetrotter" would be ok too.

Come ON!!!!!! Nobody here is a Navy/ex-Navy pilot?!?!?!?!
I was talking to a Navy Pilot a few days ago - he said that there are a few gooses and maybe and ice but no maverick. He also mentioned "merlon" and "cruise(r)".

Just trying to tell you how it is. In other words, just trying to give you the "gouge".

FYI: Any and all callsigns from TOPGUN are permanently banned from Naval Aviation.

I heard one the other day that was quite funny. His was "Tosser" because he was extremely drunk and walked in to a gay bar in New Orleans. He tried to order a salad  banghead

I would probably be stuck with Pringles if they ever found out about the only time I threw up while flying...

I was sick as it were, and my instructor gave me some Pringles chips before we flew...about half way through I said I wasnt feeling well, and ended up puking out the window...and for those of you who dont know, tghe slipstream on a Cessna 172 will take whatever you toss out of the front left seat, and place it all over the back seat....or whoever is sitting there at the time (i.e. my uncle.)

Ever since then my family calls me Pringles as a joke, and no, I dont like it.

Haha, at least people don't call you Jer Bear. I can see it now. I'm flying an F-18 or whatever planes they'll have in a few years with a big care bear painted on my helmet and people calling me Jer Bear.

Just to make sure you are seated in reality but everyone goes into PNS thinking they'll be a F/A-18 pilot. You will most likely be assigned to another aircraft, or shudder to think, a helicopter. Your abilities, test scores, etc. all factor into your placement but also what openings are available as your class comes through flight school. Good luck getting your wings.

Like FtrGuy said, it's often a play on your name-
"Comet" Haley
Stu "Pid"

Or something distinctive about you, like "Bags" if your eyes always seem to be droopy. "Bullet" if you're completely bald, etc etc.

Or simply something that rhymes with your name-
"Smiley" Reilly.

All of these were from guys I've known over the years..half of them didn't mind it, half of them hated it...but it stuck. I guarantee you won't get to pick your own. That kind of defeats the entire purpose. I don't think I've ever seen anyone carrying around a Top Gun handle, that movie is best left for a few laughs in the ready room.

Spell it right. It's all one word TOPGUN. The movie screwed it up and now it has stuck with the masses.

You are right on. It seems that the people that go to Pensacola thinking they're a badass and brag on how they are going to get F-18's, are the ones who are now flying helicopters (which is not a bad thing). Go to Pensacola with an open mind and while its OK to admit that you want to fly jets, be mentally prepared to fly something else.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING. You might have jet grades, but the week you select they might not have jet slots. There were 35 pilots in my API class. There were only 3 of us that got Hornets after winging.

Funny Callsign: I knew a guy who was pretty tall and had a huge head of red hair. His callsign was "Torch."  hot  I've also heard of guys who let an engine overheat called "Torch" as well.

One of my closest friends became a helo pilot because of slots while one of his Academy classmates got an 18 slot in the previous group that went through PNS. He was a bit grumbly about it at first but soon realized he was still flying something which most of us can only dream about. Flying is always better than being a SWO if you ask me.  duck

Any day of the week.

This helo/maritime/turboprop/jets dilema is what kept me up at night during my ROTC years in college..guys who wanted Hornets who were classes ahead of me were going there and getting helos or P-3's. Eventually only a few people in each college class were getting NA orders anyways, so it became a 1 in 1000 chance of even going fighters. Not that I'm picky, I just...don't like helos.

Hence why I'm not in that pipeline anymore, the ANG actually gives you a much better system of choosing what you're going to fly- you just have to hope you get picked up by said squadron though.

FYI: ALL the callsigns used in the movie were real except one.... "Maverick." "Hollywood" was the callsign given to NKX's Public Affairs Officer --who babysat the movie stars (and everybody else) during filming. Kelly McGillis' character wasn't originally in the script, but was written in after the producers met the inspiration for her character... a civilian analyst w/callsign: "Legs."

You did good. Out of 52 SNA's (Student Naval Aviators) in my starting class, only 5 ever received their Wings-of-Gold.

You're cracking me up!

I spoke with my Navy friend last night and his callsign is Wookie, like Chewbacca in Star Wars, since he is overly hairy. He flies helos and the call signs aren't as a big deal as jet pilots but they still have them.

Nothing at all. I'm happily married but an upgrade if I ever take UA out of LHR would be nice if you could arrange that.

DeltaGuy's callsign would be "Cleveland Steamer" for reasons of a bad experience with an ex. LOL

Lets see if I get this straight. What would my callsign be if I were a Navy pilot? Hmm, I could see it across the helmet now "AFFLUNKER." As in "Air Force (Flight School)Flunker." Thats about the only way I would be in Naval Flight School. Who wants to land on a carrier anyway? F-16 band Dos Gringos sung it best, No crosswind, you never have to flare, 4 wires-how can you miss?

My favorite was a pilot named Sleepy(the 7 dwarves), because he fell asleep and crashed his BMW through a fence.
