1A is great as it is a little unique. When I flew UA
Express last month I was pre-assigned 1A and had a large laptop bag and a large shopping bag. No problems with taking both on board but the FA
said she'd keep them in the closet, which was basically across from me in the galley. The seat has more legroom than any of the others but as you mention no overhead or underseat space. As it happened the FA
said it'd be best to move back to a pair of seats so I took her up on her offer.

I'd also recommend 12A for anything more than a short hop. I've been able to get this seat on BA
CitiExpress flights a few times with no problems and it has a little extra legroom which iss most welcome but be aware the armrest is a little shorter on the left side.
