What's The Highest Altitude You've Been At...

Mon Feb 20, 2006 7:48 pm

...for a sustained period of time?  Smile

I've been on international flights, last one was in 1994, at around FL360. Most recently I've been at the 20's flying home for summer and winter breaks. I do not recal ever flying in the 4xx flight level.  Sad

As a pilot or a passenger, what was your highest altitude?

Ahhh, another one of those great threads that separates those who have flown the rocket from everyone else.... Big grin

58,000ft LHR - JFK

I have noticed, (slightly more seriously) that some flights around Europe go high, presumably to avoid traffic. Recent flights to Poland and assorted Scandinavian countries have all hit the high 30s. A319s in particular seem to have a particular liking for 39000ft but I have no idea why that might be!

I know I've done MCO-LAX at FL400 and if I'm not mistaken I went up to FL410 on LAX-ATL for a while to avoid some lower turbulence. I might be mistaken though.

LGW-TFS we flew at FL410 most of the way. It was GB Airways' first A320, less that two weeks old at the time!

Last year on AA 66 DFW-ORD we hit FL410 for a good portion of the flight. It kind of surprised me that we got that high.

I've been up to FL410 at least twice. One was CVG-BOS on a DL 767-300 & the other was CLT-SJU on a US 767-200.

April 2005 FL410 DEN-ORD UA 772 What I heard on CH9: Turbulence reported from roughly FL320-360. After we reached 410 a few other aircraft asked for FL400-410. Most stayed around FL380 Only a full WN flight stayed within the choppy air despite clearance to FL380 since he reported he was still kind of heavy at the time.

PICTURE IT: January 1994 on a Thursday afternoon!

I was flying a UA 747-200 ORD-IAD.

After taking off from 4R/22L and getting a great view of Chicago, we head out over Lake Michigan to an ultimate altitude of 41,000'  eyepopping

FL430 AKL-LAX Qantas 744 Dec 2001

2nd: FL390 AKL-HKG Cathay Pacific Jan 2005

All other flights have either been overnight (stay up to look at the flight level in between movies or something) or too short to be able to gain such altitude.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.
