Have You Ever Had A Diversion?

Mon Feb 27, 2006 9:30 am

Hey all,
My question is, how many of you have been on a flight where you have been diverted. Do you mind it? Does it scare you? My diversions include DL PBI-CVG (diverted to LEX), and US PHL-SEA (can't remember where it diverted to)
All comments welcome.
Happy Flying!
PS-Did a search, couldn't find anything.

HP PHX-RNO, diverted back to PHX due to weather.

WN SEA-RNO, diverted to LAS due to fog.

CO IAH-ORY, diverted to EWR due to mechanical.

The only time we were ever diverted...we were diverted home.  Silly We were flying PHL-DTW on NW & because of thunderstorms, diverted to CMH, which was our final destination anyway.

Hate diversions for if I wanted to be in that city I would have booked my flight there and got off the plane.

Diversions in first class are a bit better but I've had some very lengthy trips where we didn't want to be due all to weather.

RSW to IAH ended up in MSY for 3 hours.
GSO to IAH ended up in MSY for 3 more fun filled hours.
SEA to IAH didn't leave SEA for almost 7 hours.
SNA to IAH ended up on CRP for 5 hours.
TPA to IAH held for an hour then diverted to SAT for gas and go.
Any views shared are strictly my own and do not a represent those of any former employer.

I was diverted once,

WN BWI-ISP diverted tp PVD

The weather was bad, and the flight had more turbulence than I thought an aircraft could or should tolerate. the pilots tried and failed to land twice before giving up and diverting to Providence. I wasn't scared, but i was annoyed. The flight was already over three hours late and i had a long trip to Queens from Islip to look forward to after landing.

PHX-MSP on a NW A320. Diverted to FSD due to weather in MSP. Kind of pissed me off because we missed dinner with some friends at PF Changs b/c we were sitting on the ground in FSD. But, what do you do? Sometimes things happen.

Yes,
in 1982, on a flight from Billings to MSP via Fargo, back to Fargo because of very bad weather (and I was very glad we diverted, because I felt we might have crashed landing at MSP

Also, in 1994, Miami to Buenos Aires, because of fog, diverted to Cordova, chance to meet people on the flight, not a bad experience

Way back in the day, Piedmont 727 CLT-BNA-DEN, diverted to INT (Winston-Salem, NC) due to cabin pressure. We sat on the ground in Winston-Salem for about 3 hours while they fixed the plane, then continued on to Nashville and Denver. Luckily we didn't have to connect in Nashville, it was the same plane to Denver.

I was heaed to Kansas City and diverted to Omaha a couple of years back on a Northwest DC-you-know-what. There was a thunderDunder over MCI so we sat at OMA for an hour, then headed downriver to KC.

I have had two:

The first was JFK to Zurich on a Swissair DC-8 in 1968; we were diverted to an airport in Germany, either Frankfurt or Munich (I was only 8); a few hours later, we were able to fly on to our original destination - a half-hour flight on a DC-8 was quite an experience!

The second was a flight from Zurich to Amsterdam, on board a KLM DC-9-14 in 1970. We were diverted to Rotterdam because of fog and had to take an airport bus to Amsterdam, making for a very tiring journey.

Way back....Dec 21 1981...was diverted from CLE to CAK, due to CLE closing b/c of heavy snow...I was just a kid at the time. However, it was not much better and our a/c became stuck in the snow on the taxiways upon landing into CAK....they pulled a ladder truck up to us to deplane...back in the day....(flying in from FLL)

Several . . . . especially flying around in Alaska . . . .

Outside Alaska, the last was on CO2 from GUM-HNL-IAH. Diverted to ABQ waiting for weather to clear in IAH . . . . three or fours hours on the ground there on a CO DC-10 . . . . back in 97 or 98 . . . don't remember exactly.

Diversion no, but returned to base. GB Airways LGW FAO, got 2/3rds there and it turned around. Hydraulic problems. Pilot said we could land OK, but wouldn't be able to take off again as no-one has the part he thought they needed in FAO. Good excuse for a couple more G+T's anyway.
Breakfast in BHX, lunch in FAO, dinner in TIP, baggage in YYC.

I have been on a few mid-flight diversions. A couple of warning light issues
that required immediate attention.

But most of my diversions were due to weather.

I have been on diverted aircraft trying to land at a fogged-in SAN too many
times. Although, each time we were diverted to LAX and then bused down.

I do know that when SAN is closed, some carriers will divert to PHX or LAS.
You can't really be bused in from there. That would be more of a nightmare
IMO. It's a lot easier to be only a few hours delayed than having to wait
until the fog lifts the next day.

In late 70's. flying UA 727-100 SFO-BOI in January, tried approach in BOI, but went back to RNO due to fog in BOI. Love those inversions!
Got to RNO about 8pm, left early AM. Stayed at Howard-Johnsons ( I guess, I was 7 or 8).
Interesting trip. I still vividly remember the RNO terminal then.

I have never been in diversion, but here in San Diego Fog becomes a problem and I know that airlines have diverted to other surrounding airports and sent people back to San Diego on a bus.

Over 100 flights and I finally got my first diversion this year.

Flight was scheduled from ADL-BNE; but ended up landing at Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) due to a thunderstorm in Brisbane. Sat on the plane for just over 2 hours and then eventually Qantas organised a bus to take us from Sunshine Coast back to Brisbane. Got back to Brisbane at 2:00am.

During the 2 hours on the ground they served a drink with a small snack and a movie was shown.

Diversion wasn't too bad but there is the not knowing what was going to happen factor and how long it everything was going to take.

Just one for me:

US Airways flt. 53 (I'm pretty sure it was 53) CLT-MCI over thanksgiving.. emergency landing in Nashville, TN due to cockpit fire which in turn caused a depressurization.

Only time was flying from DEN-CLT on USairways Flight 120 on June 29, 2001. Before leaving DEN, the captain informed us that it was necessary to make a fuel stop at MCI. I guess our B737-401 (N407US) could not hold enough fuel to get us to CLT... pilot blamed it on a full flight and summer heat. Anyhow, flight landed in MCI, got refueled and within 25 minutes we were back in the air. I did not make my tight connection to PHL, and ended up taking a later flight that night.

US CLT-JAX Circled for about 45 min due to a thunderstorm sitting over the airport. Went to SAV for about 2 hours finally into JAX at about 1:45 A.M. Ironically when we took off from CLT the Captain mentioned the the storms were in the area of SAV.

Yep!

April 2004, flying on a CO 737-500 from EWR to STL. It was the first day of the baseball season, and George W.Bush was in STL with Air Force 1 for the first Cardinals Game to throw the first ball, methinks. So the St Louis airspace was closed, so we circled near St Louis for about 20 minutes, and then had to fly to IND, as we didn't have enough fuel to fly much longer. Filled up and waited for a while on the ground until airspace was clear.

Wasn't scary, just a interesting story to tell!

Last summer:

CO PDX-IAH (diverted to SAT) due to weather issues at IAH (just after Katrina hit; Houston had an unrelated thunderstorm). We sat at a holding apron at SAT for over an hour then flew to IAH. Fortunately, I did not miss my connecting flight to PHL (which was delayed as well).

Me and a friend were off to Lloret de Mar for a boozy weekend.

We expected to be clubbing on Friday night but as we were about land at Gerona, the capt rammed on the engines and we diverted to Barcelona due to fog.

By the time coaches were available and we were returned to Gerona by road, it was early Saturday morning.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Had two diversions and one almost.
The first diversion occurred on a L-1011 I was jump seating on (1977??). We were flying from MIA to LGA when we started losing oil from the #2 engine. The crew shut it down and we went to JFK.
The second diversion occurred on another L-1011 (1982??) flying from ATL to MIA. Right after take-off the airplane jerked abruptly to the right and we went back to ATL. The step aside gearbox on the #3 engine failed during the climb out. I was in the cabin on this one.
The almost occurred on a Northwest DC-10-30 from Rome to DTW in 2002. An idiot had way too much to drink and started being a royal pain. It took a lot of duct tape (honest, I saw it) and 4 very big male passengers to keep him in line and we almost diverted to YUL.
A very large police officer can on at DTW and the idiot left peacefully. There were at least 2 federal charges placed against him.

We were on QF5 from SYD to FRA via SIN and BAH on a B747-300. It was the day Saddam invaded Kuwait, and since the planned route went directly overhead Iraq/Kuwait, we were rerouted further west via Cairo. It was most annoying, because I had a middle seat in the centre block, and after 26 hours had enough - this diversion added another 90 minutes...

MEM-LAX on NW in winter 1996. The guy in the row (seat) in front of me had a grand mal seizure over ELP. We diverted to ABQ to let him off. Funny thing with that was that he had no idea where he was and was barely coherent.. and all the flight attendant would do is ask him "sir, would you like to get off the plane?". Finally the paramedics came and stretchered him off the aircraft.

The worst part? Both he and I were in middle seats. The poor lady sitting next to him in the window was rather beaten up by the time we finally landed in ABQ.
