Do You Like Military Aircraft?

Sun Mar 12, 2006 10:29 pm

Its no point asking if someone here likes Civilian aircraft! The only fat of being an A.net member says it all. However, when I tell people I like airplanes they take it fro granted its military and I have to answer...umm no I like Civilian aircraft.

Whilst I absolutely love Civilian aircraft I hate Military kill machines...one reason I'm not too much keen on Airshows!
And you are you only a fan of civilian aircraft or also military?

I love ALL airplanes. Props, jets, civilian or military, if it has wings and an engine then I'm happy. I get the same joy out of watching F-18's ripping across the sky at the speed of sound as I do watching a 747 takeoff.

I personally don't care much for helicopters, though. I like my machines to have wings.

Have to agree with Jeffry747, if it doesn't have wings it doesn't interest me. But I am a fan of the larger planes....all that mass gracefully floating off into the air, then traveling at 500-600 mph......awesome ! A 747 at rotation is tops ! But military or civilian doesn't matter...

Sure, I do not mind these larger military aircraft:

I like smaller military aircraft though. Just that I do not spot them very often.

Funny, I asked the the same question on this forum some months ago
Who Doesn't Like Military Aircrafts? (by Alphafloor Nov 21 2005 in Aviation Polls & Prefs)

And no, I don't like military aircrafts. I do attend meetings and watch them politely but I just can't like them as I like airliners.

i actually cant stand them.. and I am starting to get annoyed aswell with people beginning to post pictures of these fighter jets. Since when is Airliners picture of the day supposed to be of a fighter jet...
Airliners.net in the name tells me that this website is for AIRLINERS! I just really want people to stop posting pictures of those ugly fighter jets and keep the AIRLINERS cominn!
Thanks

I have no interest in fighter planes. I realize that they are some of the most incredible technological machines in the world, but they do not have the same appeal to me. I find commercial airplanes much more fascinating.

I have also wondered sometimes why there are military planes on the Pic of the day when the site is called Airliners.Net and not Airplanes.Net. I can't say that it bothers me, but I am kind of curious

I would take a good old AC B767 over a Canadian Air force (yes we do actually have one) CF18 any day.

Not all military planes are involved with killing folks. Sounds like someone is a hippie!  biggrin

I like them all. My wife makes fun of me that I can just sit there and watch planes of all types fly by. My house is on the back side of Dobbins AFB so we see many military aircraft every day. The most common ones that we see almost every day include...

C-130 Hercules (Manufactered here)
F/A-18 Hornet
C-5 Galaxy
C-17 Globemaster
F/A-22 Raptor (Manufactured here)
E-2 Hawkeye
C-9 Nightingale
F-16 Thunderbird
F-15 Eagle
UH-60 Blackhawk
UH-1 Huey
AH-1 Cobra

and sometimes we get the big Russian AN birds ferrying something in plus a FedEx MD-11 now and then. And at least a few times a year we get Air Force One ferrying Dubya down here for a speech.

Was never one of my favorites...but how about some of the old ones...F-104, F-105, Super Sabres, T-33??? We had a friend who was stationed here way back in the 60s and he used to fly the T-birds and would regularly get into serious hot water when he'd fly real low over our house and dip his wings! His commanding officer was NOT a happy camper!!

I love em all! Any fighter jet is good to me! ever since i got to sit in an F-16 cockpit at an air show, i fell in love with them, and thus my love for aircraft began. I also love the military support aircraft, C-5, C-17, c-130.. when i used to live in Amman, Jordan, the US/jordanian air forces had C-17's and C-130's fly a lot over my house.. its just amazing to watch them fly by.. usually at slow speeds because they would be landing. The noise of the engines is simply amazing! And from the roof of my apartment building, i had a fairly good view of the airport they were landing at. Very impressive.

I also love military helicopters, namely the apache, comanche, cobra, eurocopter tiger, and the black hawk. The fact that the apache can strike 16 targets at one go is insane!

Regards
Okees

P.S the movie TopGun got me nuts about the F-14

I am not a fan of military aircraft. I work close to the Arizona Air Guard and military craft fly over all day. What makes my work place enjoyable is that I can see airliners landing at Tucson International Airport.

Commercial airliners all the way. In my opinion, something more impressive about them.

When the US NAvy was still here, we'd get a lot of P-3 and C-130 flying around. Now we only get the occasional C-130, usually support aircraft for one of the royalty from the Middle East who own a hotel here (can't remember what country). During hurricane season we see a few more P-3s as they fly hurrican hunter missions in and around the area.
Saw my first C-5 when I was about 13; I was out camping with a Girl Guide group on a point of land opposite the runway, and at about 6.30am this huge bird took off over our heads....long, large, loud and low. Very impressive.

I really miss the good old days...

With respect, airliners can be boring and are getting more so, there is no variety at airports anymore. Of course, it will be my job to change that, so no worries.  Wink

I'm not a military buff (my expertise is in transport systems), but I do respect that fact that if it weren't for the military, we would not have a commercial aviation industry as it stands today. If you have a problem with people dying, that is in no way an aircraft's fault. People kill people, don't scapegoat.

FYI and FWIW, the next generation Concorde exists in its infancy, i.e technology is pretty new, under military contracts. Not informing yourself is negligent; assuming you know better, whereas Concorde is your only example, is ignorant. I advise against waiting for Boeing/Airbus to show an interest, their view of the future is both too narrow and too wide.
