Questions About Aeroflot Business Class

Mon Mar 13, 2006 10:26 pm

I've been looking for the cheapest way to get from London to Bangkok in Business Class and it appears that Aeroflot has the most inexpensive airfare, which is £ 802, or € 1,100 (compared with BA, which is € 2,107).

I had a look at their web site and you get portable DVD players and what not on the A320 service from London to Moscow, and the new seats and the rest look great.

However, I can't seem to find anything on the IL96, which serves the Moscow to Bangkok sector. It looks like they don't have the beds like the 767s do, and my question is - what is the business cabin like in the IL96 and what can I expect?

I could take Air France for only € 1,300 but I'd rather do something slightly more exotic and finally fly on a Russian airliner at the same time. I've been to Russia and the customer service ethic is different to where I'm from, so what are the F/As like as well?

Any help would be appreciated!

Trent.

Doesn't look so bad to me! Anyway, no idea about in flight service.

Aircraft are marginal costs with wings.

Judging from the pics it looks OK but it appears to have less recline/seat pitch than Western/Asian carriers.

I would have to see a side view to have a definitive opinion though.

That's what I thought as well... still, I'm only short so it's no big deal!

Those pics are First Class.

Business has 2-4-2 config which is like premium economy, not even lounge access is offered. Go for SU F or AF otherwise.

I'm guessing that's the real business class then?

Certainly is weird...

AFAIK, you're right. Probably explains the very low ticket price.

However the last time I looked at SU was probably more than a year ago when I was looking for cheap BKK tickets. If the situation has changed, I'd be happy to be corrected.

I just called Aeroflot in the UK and the agent advised me that the Business Class cabin on the IL96 is 2-2-2. The first picture would therefore be correct.

When checking online, the flight lists how many seats are available in each class, and the IL96 flights to Bangkok list only Business and Economy.

So perhaps the 2-2-2 used to be First on this aircraft, but it's Business now.

So, what would that strange little 2-4-2 cabin be about?

Dunno, could be the old Business Class? I imagine the changes were implimented because of SkyTeam perhaps... guessing...

Looks like the 2-2-2 is 1st Class (on routes where this still exists) with the next cabin 2-4-2 as Business and then the larger cabin 3-3-3 as Economy.

Take a look at http://www.aeroflot.ru/eng/company.asp?ob_no=741&p_no=2025

There's a seat map of SU's IL96 there:

First class is indeed 2-2-2, biz is 2-4-2, and economy is 3-3-3.

However, out of 11 flights that I made with SU's IL96, I can tell you that SU used the first cabin for biz passengers on three flights, thereby freeing up the biz cabin for economy seats. That's probably the reason why the photographer in Budapest claims that the 2-2-2 is business, since there's obviously no need for a first class between SVO-BUD.

I did make one flight with SU between KHV-SVO when I booked myself on business class because it was supposed to be in the first cabin, but SU made a last minute change and put all biz passengers in the real biz cabin, thereby angering a lot of the passengers.

If you do end up in the business cabin, it's a total waste of money. The seats are only marginally wider than the economy seats, and the seat pitch only slightly better. My wife actually prefers to fly in the economy section, as you can raise the armrests and lie down flat if there are few passengers. But in the biz cabin, you can't do that.

The seats in the first cabin are quite good, but still far below the major European airlines. I did fly in that cabin once, and the seat pitch is so horrible that if the person in front of you reclines his seat, you can't even keep a laptop on your tray table!

Well it appears there is no F to BKK so you should be safe.

Exactly!

Thanks for all the information, people! Much appreciated!

It's so unbelievably cheap that it will be worth it. It's only a little bit more expensive than QF Economy on the same route, so why not really...

Personally I would take SU , how many times will you get the chance to fly on an IL96?

I know... it's pretty much done and dusted that I'll be taking SU. Besides, why fly Economy when you can fly Business for almost the same price?
