How Do You Pass Time In Flight?

Tue Mar 21, 2006 5:00 am

What do you do during flights (long or short)? I usually bring a ton of magazines, a good book, my computer (with DVD's and a power adapter). I listen to "9" on United. I look at the beautiful earth. I write in my journal.

If I am not alone, I play backgammon with my partner.

* Sample the fine cuisine on board
* Drink. Copiously. Especially champagne.
* Watch a movie or TV show
* Listen to music
* Read the inflight magazine, check out the duty free catalogue
* Use the bathroom (see point 2)
* Look out the window at the passing scenery
* Chat to the Flight Attendants as much as possible after service
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

On United I listen to 'Chan 9', otherwise on long flights it always gets to the stage where I just fidget. I wish I could sleep like other people.

Usually I just read and listen to either Channel 9 on UA or music on my Shuffle. I don't know why, but I don't like to clutter up the tray-table with stuff, whether it's my laptop or not.

And if I'm fortunate enought to get (close to) a window seat, my face is plastered to the plastic for the duration of the flight, lol.

Depends on the carrier

On VS I eat like a pig, sleep like a baby, watch as many movies as possible. and hope to get a head massage.

on carriers without PVT, I use my ipod and a book and pray for the flight to be over soon

You know, that would be more fun if you remove he last word  biggrin

I normally bring my ipod with me and listen to music. I also love movies on ultra long haul flights. I drink maybe a couple of beers coz I hate having to excuse myself to use the bathroom every half an hour which is normally what ends up happening anyways.

Last but not least, I just crooss my fingers when I first board the flight hoping to sit next to some cute blonde.....who knows, mile high club isn't that hard to join  biggrin

Well first I have my meal, usually simultaneously watching the PTV. Takes about a half hour. After that I either read or play Su Doku (includibly addictive!!!)

As I don't usually fly on flights with PTV's, I...
*Watch the movie being shown.
*Look out the window and try to get good pictures for an a.net trip report  Smile
*Try (and fail) to sleep
*Use my laptop for its 45 minutes of battery life (sometimes less)
*Do my homework
*Read, read, read
That's about all I can do. Regardless, flying is the greatest thing in the world.

Listen to my iPod and read - usually bring a couple of magazines and a book. If I'm in an exit row seat (or the rare occasions I've flown business class), watch a movie or play games on my laptop, at least until the battery dies if there's no power port.

If I'm on B6 I'll watch TV if something's on - flying back from TPA Sunday I watched the second half of "Caddyshack", one of the greatest movies ever made...  Silly

Quoting BradWray (Reply 14):
-Spot the female talent

Oh, yeah, if there is any. I have incredibly bad luck in this regard, it never fails - any hot girl on the plane will be seated at least 10 rows away from me, while I get to enjoy the company of some bickering senior citizens...

CO....pre-departure beverage

After 10,000' a beverage and some sort of snack/meal

Laptop, onboard movie, magazine......anything to avoid the bordem that is flying with the obnoxious passenger next to you! Where are all the fun outgoing people on airplanes?

Not on the flights I'm on!  Silly

I'd love to sit next to a fun, outgoing person or two, but all I ever seem to get seated next to are complaining AARP members and families that are too busy arguing about what they're going to do (or not do) when they get to Florida to have a conversation with anyone else. Oh, and the iPod or LiveTV helps drown out the crying babies.

(90% of my flying is to Florida, does it show?  Silly )

On long haul, take a sleeping tab after the meal then flake out. The only way to travel, if you're not in business or first class.

I wait for meal service, and after that dig out my laptop and play solitaire. For the record I have horrible luck with that game on planes for some reason. I also listen to my iPod for the entire flight (when use of electronics is allowed, except during meals), try to get to the bathroom once (even if I don't need to use it for some reason - probably a plane thing!), and people watch to an extent. If the plane has audio IFE I'll listen to that for a while to save iPod batteries. If there's a movie I'll watch it if I'm interested; otherwise I ignore it. I also look through the airline magazine. For my last flight I bought a sudoku book to work on and that went well. Next month I'll have PTV for the first time (on Frontier) but I still have to decide whether to watch TV or watch the moving map!

For me on domestic flights (my domestic flights so far havn't been longer then 1 hour 5 mins) I stare out the window and read the in-flight mag. International flights, read the in-flight mag, look out the window and listen to the IFE

Flying in cramped coach class: Hoping that the flight will be over soon.
Flying longhaul in Biz: Sipping some Champagne, dining, relaxing, gazing out of the window onto either Greenland or some Polar lights.
No real need for massive PTV/IFE; usually I´m happy with a simple moving map.

Some of my favorites:

Bring a US road atlas (such as Rand McNally), which is small enough to fit in my briefcase but has enough geographic detail to be able to follow along with where we are if the weather's good.

Use my video iPod...download some TV shows or movies, and it's convenient IFE for every flight!

If I'm heading to a conference at which I'm going to lecture (I usually am), I do my PowerPoint slides on the plane. Those of us who live in Madison joke we can give 2 lectures at every conference, since it takes us 2 flights to get anywhere!

Oh, and on Midwest: eat fabulous food and chocolate chip cookies, stretch out and feel sorry for the poor dudes having to fly anyone else.

 Big grin

I used to read, listen to audiobooks on my PDA, star out the window like a zombie or watch the IFE. But now that I've found this wonderful place called A.NET, I'll be spending hours taking pictures and documenting everything for a trip report. Except when I do fly for work, it's about a 2 hour flight on either WS or AC, so not too much to report there. Liftoff, overpriced snack, landed.

Never thought of that, but seeing as I drive for a living, I really wouldn't get much use from the map. Good idea though.

Continually updating our position fix using nav radios instead of using the Garmin GPS. That way if the Garmin goes out, I can plot our position almost immediately on the Jepp charts.

Sleep, stretch, eat, IFE - thank god SQ has the best for this category. It's 14" PTV in F along with the the huge array of movies & game selections available on the Wisemen AVOD kept me busy for SIN-LHR and back.

Usually I think I'll get something to read in the Airport, and nothing piques my interest, and since I try to pack very very light, I don't bring anything with me. If I have my laptop, the battery will die halfway through any movie. So, I usually end up sitting there, trying to sleep, which I can't. Luckily most my flights are an 1:45 long.

I sit there wishing it was over (er, the flight, that is.)

- If it's a loooong international flight, I watch the same movies over and over again. I can't really sleep on planes.
- If it's shorter and there's no IFE, I sit there fidgeting waiting for landing.
- If it's a short hop (almost always Boston <> NY) then I look out the window. A nice smooth flight at 10,000' on a nice summer or winter day and I'll be glued to the window.
