Best Way To Hungary From New York

Tue Mar 21, 2006 6:52 am

I am travelling to Hungary this summer sometime in mid July, and I have absolutely no idea how we should get there. We will be leaving from JFK as we will be on holiday there from our home in PHX, but we are getting there on FF miles and that leg doesn't matter. The options that I have found are

JFK-BUD on Malev 767
JFK-LHR-BUD on British Airways
JFK-BUD on Delta 767
JFK-Warsaw-BUD on LOT 767 and ERJ 170
JFK-ROME-BUD on Alitalia
JFK-FRA-BUD on LH

I would like a decent IFE system, but I am curious to try out new airlines. What would the direct Malev flight be like? Currently I am leaning towards BA because we would get FF miles.

If you want interesting IFE, go BA. None of the other airlines have PTVs in coach, except for AZ if you are on a 777-- and at EWR/JFK, they get subbed ALL THE TIME.

It's a lot of miles to miss out on...

This is just me: I would try MA because it is the local carrier of the country you are visiting, it offers non-stop service and therefore you will be able to devote more time to Hungary.

DL has, for your information, a discounted fare JFK-BUD available. That should definitely interest you.

Another alternative is to choose your carrier according to your frequent flyer program.

If good IFE is a must have for you, then BA is probably your best choice.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

I for sure would choose the carriers that provides the greater amount of miles to my frequent flyer program...in your case I'd go for BA, which by the way has also a great service!

You could always go CO to Gwatwick from EWR and pick up a cheap easyjet flight to BUD. Or you could even try CO to Bristol and change to Easyjet there,

I've flown MA trans-atlantic at least 10 times. The only incentive is the fare, I just bought YYZ - BUD for $750cdn, which is at least $300 cheaper than anything else I could find for that period. MA also has some early bird specials to JFK starting in May.

MA's 2 B762ERs are almost 12 years old and haven't been refurbished at all. Service occasionally comes with a typical Hungarian attitude, seat pitch is good compared to other 767s, food is above standard, drink all you want and its free, IFE is very poor if it works at all.

DL flights start in May, I believe 3x/w. If your not on a budget go with BA.

I agree, go BA if you aren't in a budget. If you are, MA is fine, I've flown them a few times both long and short-haul. Good airline, I like them, but not the best. Interesting to hear DL is starting it...it's been a while since I've flown transatlantic on DL, but I remember them being a good, solid airline...not great but not poor. Out of all those, I'd say first go BA, last go AZ.

Quoting Airbus3801 (Thread starter):

BA is THE way to go across the Atlantic to Hungary. All the others, especially LH, run old equipment. The BA T7's are fantastic and the IFE is unparalleled.

Malev ain't too bad either. The 767's are nice and comfy, especially since its tough to get a lousy seat. The food is excellent BUD-JFK, but marginal JFK-BUD. Another plus is that most of the Malev FA are hotties which helps to make the hours pass by pleasantly.  Smile

Avoid LH at all costs. Back when I was doing the east coast -BUD monthly back in '99-2000, I flew all the carriers over. KLM was great because you could get on the DC-10's, although the middle seat on a row of 5 sucked royally.

BA is king on this route!

Agreed! However, I personally find most European airlines, ESPECIALLY compared to USA airline, to have hot flight FA's. And, on top of that, throw in the fact that they are Eastern European...While Slovakia may have the hottest women I have ever seen, Hungary isn't far behind, and I have been all over Hungary several times to verify it!  Wink

Being from Namibia, but spending the last 4 years in college in the USA and half of high school before that in the USA, and being that Namibia has very close ties to Germany, I have flown LH many a time to many a corner of the world (Africa, Europe, USA). I have enjoyed them. Maybe I just lucked out, but I would by no means say, based on my opinions, to avoid them at all costs. While I agree BA is better, LH is not the plague in my opinion.

SW733, sorry I was confusing. I really mean to say avoid LH on that route, as opposed to ALL routes.. They are OK SFO-FRA-BUD, but they generally use older equipment. However some new aircraft are starting to arrive so its getting better.

BTW, hello to a neighbor from Southern Africa. Botswana is the place I called home for many years.

Cheers

I flew LH YYZ-FRA-BUD B744/A321.

YYZ-FRA was the worst long-haul flight I've ever been on. The B744 seemed a lot more cramped than other B744s. The food was unidentifiable and tasteless, the IFE was turned off for 3 hrs during the night, so were all the lights so I ended up staring at the seat back in front of me.

FRA-BUD totally the opposite. Comfy leather seats, good food, no IFE but it was only a 1.5hr flight. The LH A321 Captain on the way back BUD-FRA was so cool. He kept talking on the PA about the A321 and the scenery over Budapest has we were climbing. The landing in FRA was unbelievable smooth, The only reason I knew we touched down was the deployment of the spoilers.
