Is EgyptAir Safe?

Wed Mar 22, 2006 7:05 am

I was just wondering what peoples views were regarding EgyptAir. I am not looking to start a flame war, so please try and be mature about it.

Anyway, the question: Is EgyptAir a safe airline? And would you be willing to fly with them? EgyptAir have a history of fatal accidents over a period of many years.

I flew on EgyptAir back in 2004. It was onboard a 737-500 from Larnaca (Cyprus) to Cairo (Egypt). During take-off, the emergency exit handle cover fell off and frightened the passenger sat next to the emergency exit as she was holding it, in fear that the door may open.. (I was sat behind her) Anyway, once we reached about 10000ft, a flight attendant came and fixed the cover back in place. Given the fact that the cover was attached to the handle, any significant force on the cover may have pulled back the door handle, and thus, opened the exit door. (This is taking into account that the aircraft had not reached a sufficient altitude for the door to be jammed by the pressure)

After thinking about that again today, and when taking the number of accidents into account, it makes me wonder; Is EgyptAir a safe airline in your opinion?

Note: I am not trying to bash EgyptAir. I am simply questioning their safety reputation as an airline and asking for feedback from a.net users.

Thanks.

I flew them last year from JFK-CAI on their 777, and it was a pretty good ride, even though I was in the first class. I'd fly them again if I can, and I will this summer on their A340 from CAI-DXB.

The answer is simple: YES
If they would be unsafe, they would not be allowed to fly into certain european cities what they do.
I flew them two years ago to Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh and all flights were very nice. There was no indication whatsoever that they might be unsafe, the cabin was in spotless condition, the pilots made a competent impression (and also very smooth landings) and the cabin crew seemed well trained.
In terms of maintenance, while taxiing in Cairo, I saw their maintenance facility and I guess if they would employ incompetent technicians, they would be forced to shut it down, so no worries there.
In my opinion it is a good airline and they made a good impression to me, I would fly them again without hesitation.

cheers,

Fatal accidents over a LONG period. Only 2 fatal ones within 15 years, one of which was most probably suicide by FO, which you cant blame on the airline.
Their previous record surely wanst the best, but they improved remarkably.
No problems to fly with them I think.

You don't leave any choice but to begin a flame war, your tread is like asking"is flying safe?".So be mature and think twice before starting your treads and involucrating an airline nominated to be a Star alliance member!
With all my respect

I know that MS have said they would like to join Star - I have not seen anything that actually confirms that they have been nominated. Also I am not quite sure what you meant by 'involucrating' ?

I only respond when it's really unfair to not do so.
It's kind of immature to chose one airline from many and title it with unsafe fame just to begin a thread.Egyptair is a worldwide remunerated airline ,they fly a modern fleet and follow international safety regulations

Seriously, who cares if some covers fall off? Exit opeinig handles require a lot more than a flying plastic cover.

I've flown on Orient Thai, Wings Air (crashed 4 hours later), Mandala Airlines (crashed 2 weeks later), Lion Airlines, Phuket Air, Air Asia (horrible condition of their 737s, especially Thai Air Asia) etc etc.

If Egypt Air sounds unsafe to you, perhaps it's better to stay on the ground altogether.  Embarrassment

Let's see:

1 suicide
1 hijaking
1 pilot error

I'll fly with them  Smile

Generally speaking, flying is much safer than most other types of transportation. If you're going to visit Egypt, I'm quite sure that the biggest risk will be in the taxi on Cairo's roads; you're much more likely to end up dead in a taxi or a bus on the streets of Egypt than on the airplane to Egypt, and that's no matter if you fly Egyptair or Lufthansa.

Now, having said that, I'm kind of reluctant to fly with Egyptair after how they treated the incident with the supposed suicide crash. I mean, even if all indications pointed to a suicide, Egyptair refused to entertain even the possibility that a suicide could be the cause of the crash. And that kind of attitude makes me a little bit worried.

But again, even with such an attitude, I believe that the greatest risk is in the taxi from the airport in Cairo.

I've seen many threads on airliners.net where somebody asks a question about the safety of some airline. Almost every day there is some new thread criticizing Ryanair, and other airlines as well. If you're going to police this forum and criticize everybody asking safety questions about all airlines, good luck to you! You'll have plenty of work to do.

Well it's not acceptable to criticise airlines safety without any logical prove.I understand critics about service and catering but safety is a very sensible issue. If one day i fly X airline and the emergency exit handle cover felt off ,i wont make a title in the newspapers questioning the safety of that airline ,i must give a serious and dangerous safety irregularities to justify such serious questioning

RichM didn't criticize Egyptair; he was asking what opinion other readers have about the airline and quoted one incident where he was an eye witness. I've seen other posts with far more serious safety bashing on airliners.net.

Neither did RichM. He only brought it up in a forum where people are discussing such issue the whole time.

The only reason why I'd be nervous flying EgyptAir is because of the pilot who killed himself along with all the pax several years ago...But you can't blame EgyptAir for that I guess....

Here is the NTSB report, make of it what you will:

In my opinion its pretty damn clear that it was suicide, no matter how much anyone tries to cover it up.

I guess you are talking about the Aeroflot A310 which crashed because the captain´s kids were allowed to sit in the cockpit and play around with the controlles. A detailed report can be found here

Egypt Air is a safe Airline, they have a modern fleet & high trained pilots.

Most of their Boeing 737-500 are sold & due to be out of fleet within the next few months by receiving the new Boeing 737-800.

Good Luck Egypt Air  Smile

Well, my point was that flying on an OX 747-100 or LNI MD-82 is much safer than walking on the street or taking a taxi in Bangkok or Jakarta respectively.

As an aviation guy it was one of my highlights to fly on that OX 747-100. And some of you guys wonder if MS is safe. Each to his own I guess.
