Your First Flight?

Thu Mar 23, 2006 4:47 pm

Tomorrow the 24th marks the five-year anniversary of my first flight. I'm wondering, what was your first flight? How old were you, and how was the flight (like a mini-trip report)?

Mine: MG420 (Not entirely sure of the number, but it sounds familiar and this is the flight number of that route today), KMSP-MMPR, Boeing 727-200. March 24, 2001. Age 13, almost 14. Seat between 4A and 8A. Departed mid-morning from the old Humphrey Terminal at MSP. That was a bizzarre terminal, and the waiting areas were practically windowless. I was pretty excited but also nervous. Actually, my biggest fear concerned my ears popping! I didn't quite understand how pressurization works, so I thought the problem would be way worse than it was. As we left we taxiied past the new Humphrey terminal which was a couple of weeks from opening. We took off from 12L or 12R. One thing that was kind of uncomfortable was that some sort of strap got sealed in the left front doorway, making some annoying sounds. However, the door sealed around it, or else the strap was only partially through, because the FA decided it wasn't a major issue after looking at it. On board service was beverages and hot sandwiches. We landed in PVR from the Northeast. That approach was very interesting as we passed the mountain range on the outside of Puerto Vallarta. We landed roughly around 1 PM, walked down airstairs to a waiting bus to take us to the terminal. It was around 85 degrees, much warmer than MSP which was below freezing.

MAN-JFK in 1972 on a BOAC Super VC10. Can't remember a lot about it apart from the spectacular take off on 06. At that time BOAC had a sky club or something like that for kids and you could get your book signed by the captain along with the details of the flight.

Back in 1989, after having a summer job while I was still living in Poland, I saved months for this specila flight.

It was LOT4s Antonov-24 flying from WAW to GDN. As soon as i've seen TU5 appearing on the route in LOT's timetable, two months later a flight WAW-GDN followad making it my first JET flight.

Got both LO 788 frames already, next LO E95 and 734 BRU-WAW-BRU

I do know it was on a Garuda flight from AMS to SIN (and to CGK ofcourse).
My parents said I was waving to all the people and didn't suffer of the turbulence like other babies did and that the F/As brought me to the gally to "talk" with me.. what ever haha

I cant remember my first flight because I was only 1 ! lol ! I have however asked my mother about it and she said that we were on the now defunk Eastern Airlines, we were going to Orlando, Florida. She told me I cried basically the whole way there, at the time she didnt know why, however as i've got older, and continued to fly I realize that I have bad ears, and that was probably the reason why I was crying ! Till this day I have to buy "earplanes" to protect my ears

Idlewild to Miami, 1954, airline name not remembered. I only have one memory of the trip. On the return flight I saw somebody drop a lit cigarette in the aisle and step on it. For the rest of the flight I was in a state of panic because I was sure the heat from the cigarette would ignite the fuel and we would explode. It's a miracle that we survived. Big grin

That would be LHR-AGP in the summer of 1966 (I think) in a BEA Vanguard. I was about four years old.

Late 60's, Lake Central Airlines, my first ever flight was on the venerable DC-3, from Wheeling WV to DCA, with a stop in Morgantown WV along the way.

The trip also included a National Electra from DCA to ORF, then a United Viscount up to PIT with a stop in Baltimore along the way, and another DC-3 for the short hop down to Wheeling.

Two days, 4 flights, for my first time flying!

December of 1987, LHR-MLA with Air Malta. I was 11 months old so don't remember much about the flight; it was a present from my Grandfather who took our entire family over to Malta for Christmas and New Year. I have been told that the aircraft had 4 engines, so can be fairly sure that it was a 707 that I flew on.

My first flight was with my 6th grade, end of the year class trip to the state capitol, Sacramento. We flew from LAX to SMF on a Western 737-200, and back that same evening on a PSA MD-80. That was on May 12, 1983, and was the only time I flew those two, great airlines!

It was either in December, 1988 or January, 1989. I was only a few months old. I know it was on DL and was on a LGA-FLL route and I was seated in Y.
Is there any way that if I called DL they would somehow be able to track down the flight date and number of a flight this long ago?

My first flight was some time around the mid 1970s - Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Hannover; I don't remember much about it (must have been somewhere around 3 or 4 years old back then), but my parents still do - because the plane had an engine shut down in flight...

I assume we are talking commercial flights.
At age 26 in 1980. UA 747 or DC-10 EWR-LAX. Left in early evening, landed in the evening at LAX. My first real distant vacation on my own and flying. Spent 2 weeks driving around California in the LA area, to the mountains to Sequia and Yellowstone NP's, to San Francisco, then drove the PCH back to LA.

I was 8 months old in 1983. With TWA, we did COS-DEN-JFK-MAD. I believe the DEN-JFK route was flown with a L1011. The JFK-MAD was done with a 747. I've seen the pictures and have deciphered that much.

My first flight was in 2000 and I was 16 years old. I flew Airtran from Chicago Midway to Atlanta. I was soo nervous. I was flying down to help my aunt drive back from her last year of college. It was a last minute, one way ticket that cost $95.

The flight was really delayed. It was coming in from MSP and continuing on to ATL. The gate changed two times and I was scared the entire time because I was not sure I was at the right gate. FINALLY the plane arrived and boarding commenced. I sat in my seat (window), which I found highly uncomfortable. We pushed backed and was ready for take-off. The THRILL, excitement that went through me when we took off was/is indescribable. It felt like I was on air. We got in the air and I tried to let my seat back, but I did not know how.  Sad Instead of asking the flight attendant, or the guy next me, I just slouched in my seat. I was up for the beverage service, but immediately afterwards I fell asleep (slouched in my seat). When I woke up, my pop can magically disappeared and my tray table was in the upright position. I was AMAZED. lol ...We arrived in ATL in FOG. Thought that was awesome, though I was, again, nervous.

After pulling into the gate at 1:30 AM I learned the train service in the airport was done for the night so I had to walk the entire length of the airport. WHEW! Halfway to the entrance, my aunt actually met up with me. Yes, the days when family could wait or visit with you at the gate.

So yeah, my first trip! MDW-ATL on AirTran in December 2000 at 16 years old.  Smile

My first flight was in December of 1989 on a chartered CO DC10 from SEA to HNL to watch the Washington State Cougars in the Aloha Bowl. Even though that was a looooong time ago I do remeber getting to watch Sesame Street on the big screen and sleeping on the floor next to the emergency exit. I don't think they'd let a kid do that anymore.

Spring 1990 (I was 11) with BD, BHX-CPH-BHX on, I think, a 737. I remember we sat near the back of the a/c on both sectors and the look of absolute fear in my mother's face nearly put me off flying for life.

BD made a special fuss of my sister and I on the return leg - as first-time flyers we were invited onto the flightdeck during cruise to meet the Captain and F/O where I was presented with a model plane and was able to watch as we made landfall over Hull. I can't for the life of me remember what we talked about, but I was on the flightdeck for a good 5-10 minutes before returning to my seat as the seatbelt signs were switched on. There's something that wouldn't happen today!!

I recall the experience as being a mix of nerves and excitement, but despite that, I didn't fly again for another 10 years!

The first commercial flight I remember was on AA flying NY (airport?) to Tulsa alone with my mother and I was four years old.... Sat about three rows from the flight deck on the right side of the a/c (Constellation? DC-?..... this was the mid 50s). It made a big impression on me. First of all I remember the F/A asking me if I was nervous and if I had ever flown before. I told her the truth. I had never flown on a plane where my father wasn't the pilot ( Smile)..... She took me to see the Captain who told me all about his kids and gave me an AA ring. I had it for years. I also remember being fascinated by the little bottles they served the cream for the coffee in. The F/A must have told all the other passengers, because everyone started passing their cream up the aisle for me to drink..... what a weird memory. But a very nice one. Also I was very impressed by getting a steak for dinner! On an airplane!

Hello everyone!

My first flight was on a F-27-200 with Icelandair. They were old even then.

It was sometime in the early 80s, when I was just a really young kid. I was at least 4 years old, so it must have been in 1983 or 1984. I flew with my grandfather from AEY to REK on the F-27 in the spring and I remember how noisy the F-27 was when taking off and how the smell of the exhaust was all over the airport when we arrived there and how it sparked a visceral anticipation when the motors of the F-27 started. I don't remember more specifics, so it isn't much of a trip report, just the smell, the noise and the anticipation that something incredible was about to happen.

And something incredible did happen - I flew for the first time in my life and ever since, I've admired and desired flying
