Worst Plane You Ever Flew On?

Sun Mar 26, 2006 6:28 am

Well, not counting the two-seater 150's and the like, what's the worst plane you ever flew on?

I personally flew on an ET 737-200 ADD-EBB and just couldn't wait to get out of the thing. It was rattling and nothing seemed to work in the cabin. Shame coz their 767's are pretty awesome...not to mention the F/A's  wink

Excel Airlines B737-800. NCL-HER. My seat wouldn't recline, the movie sucked, the air hostess was a complete stroppy cow, and I had to endure the same plane again on the HER-NCL leg. Worst 8 hours (4 hours each way) of my life.

JG
First Class passengers are my favourites. They can't get any further forward without an ATPL.

NK , 353 I think it was, ACY-TPA back in Feb 2006.. Plane was old, it was an MD-80 I believe.. Seats were wornout, cut, the panel on the bulkhead to hold the safety cards and what not was held by one screw.. the lavatory was dirty, horrible smell.. overall, just walking into the plane was disturbing

1.) Aero Flight DUS-HER and back. Awful seat pitch, crew was Okay. I would never fly that cramped A320 again.

2.) Alitalia MD Super 80 on MXP-OTP and OTP-MXP. Service was fair, seat pitch way too small for me.

Once in the mid 80s I was flying Frontier v.1.0 from DEN to OAK. The heater while on the ground was non-existant. The interior was beyond worn out, it still had the original 707 style overheads and bins. The flight was full and very late as we were held (in the ice box) for an arriving PeopleExpress 747 full of connecting pax.

Just last year, a UA 737, DEN-PHL. Nothing seemed to work, whether it was the IFE (not even Channel 9!) or the cabin crew. Longest flight of my life. The only "good" thing was I had an overwing window seat.

My vote goes to AN-24 U6 From SVX to CEK, the Plane was old (An-24), old equipment poor seat pitch, crew was ok as usual in U6.

A Frontier v1 737 from DEN-FAT. I loved Frontier but this one apparently had
a problem with the seal around the main entrance door and we had to live with
a very high pitched whistling sound the entire flight.

Second..was a TAP L1011..a charter that originated in the Azores, stopped in
BOS and then continued to SFO. We (my son and I) were on the BOS-SFO
leg. My ex MIL had purchased us tickets to fly out and pick up a car she was giving my son. The flight was 2 hours late, jam packed and we were sitting in
the last row in the center section. I guess it wasn't the plane..I loved L1011s..maybe just the flight.

TAROM IL-18, 1973 Constsnta-Istanbul and vv.

Tatty inside, tepid water and a bar of chocolate for breakfast.

Nonetheless an interesting and very different experience, especially the night take off at the end of a thunderstorm at Istanbul and the low level, high speed, approach over the flat country between the Black Sea and Constanta Airport, so different from the normal IL-18 steep approach.

Back in October 1983 on my first transatlantic flight (JFK-LGW). It was on an ex AA 707 beater operated by a charter airliner (Global International?) in a window seat, on a very full flight, with pitch for legless people, outdated interior, blah food, late getting out of JFK, packed flight, poor service. My return was a charter space seat on a regular TWA L-1011 (IIRC) flight LHR-JFK. That was much better.

Unfortunately I had many horrible trips, mostly due to cramped seat layout.

The worstest was Azzurra Air 737-700 from ACE to MXP.
I was seated in the last row, in the middle seat, between two very big men.
The flight took off at 1.30 am and arrived at 6.30am.
Horrible

Another one was with Tunisair (727-200 MXP-DJE), really cramped!!

Then KLM 743 AMS-LAX.
Seated in the last row again, but with a window seat. The space between the seat and the wall (bigger than in other rows) was very uncomfortable and makes the window not usable if you stay seated. At that time, that section of the aircraft was a smokers one, and I don't smoke (but my mother does.....)

But these are only the highlights.

I can say that all the charter flights originating in Italy are horrible (seats, children and their mummies, talkative people, etc etc) Big grin

Ciao

My worst was a JK ZRH-FUE charter flight, maybe some 15 years ago. Probably technically the airplane was just fine, but I was still a kid and got scared just by looking at the plane.

My dad knew I liked planes, so he asked the F/A if I could visit the cockpit. Permission was granted and I walked up front (as I already did before on a couple of LX B747s where I really enjoyed it). That confirmed my scare: the two pilots were sort of lying in their seats half-asleep, feet on the panels and didn't even say "hi". They were listening to an old FM radio just sitting on top of the panel and the cockpit was even more dirty than the rest of the plane. Just horrible.

For me, that would be either a China Southwest Airlines B737-800 flight from CKG to SHA or an Excel Airways B737-800 (flying for Air Berlin) flight from NUE to HAJ... both were the, by far, least comfortable planes (extremely cramped seats with close to no legroom) I've ever had the dubious pleasure of flying on...

The only other planes that came close to the same type of torture were SAA's A300s or Hapag Lloyds A310s with 3-3-3 configs...  yuck

A toss up between Virgin Atlantic's G-VAEL (Maiden Tolouse) which had a worn out interior, knackered IFE, broken tray table and exposed wires in the seatback...
and a Tuninter 737-200 with a chicken in the cabin.

Seeing as VS gave me 5,000 miles to appoligise for the state of its A340, I guess its Air Chicken!!!

More recently, I wasn't too impressed with the state of DL 767s!

I can't beleive I'm going to even say this, but it was an ATA-chartered L-1011 for the US military, from Misawa AB to Seattle. What was so terrible about it? I was assigned to the very-most forward-right seat on the aircraft, and because the stuffy Colonel wanted an empty seat on both sides, I had my long legs pressed into the right bulkhead and it was COLD. 12 hours stuck in that position, I was lucky I was young and my joints still worked when the aircraft arrived in Seatac.
It only takes five years to go from rumor to standard operating procedure.

I have two:

Rich International DC-8, LHR-JFK, a former Braniff bird. In Braniff service, she was probably a pleasure to fly on, but with RI, the leather seats looked like worn combat boots and there were holes in the panels where the movie screens used to be. Only two or three flight attendants on board, whose primary duty was to coerce the passengers to lower their shades so everyone would go to sleep and not bother them. Meal service consisted of a snack hastily tossed onto our tray tables during descent.

Aeromexico DC-9-14, MID-MEX, first thing New Year's Day. The pilot taxied out, dispensing with any preflight checks. He began the take-off roll with the ailerons in a position that had me envisioning us doing cartwheels across the Merida apron, straightening them out only as we gathered speed. In flight, the cockpit door accidentally opened, revealing a flight attendant sitting on the pilot's lap. On finals at Mexico City, the pilot was way too high and attempted to let the aircraft drop a few hundred feed before abandoning the maneuver and wisely deciding to go around. As a parting gift, I got "Montezuma's revenge" from the food.

Eastern A300 ATL-SFO Dec '84, 4 hour mx after fuel poured out from the right wing tank like a waterfall just prior to pushback. I blame the mechanics who were at war with management during this time and no doubt sabotaged the aircraft.

Ex AA 747-123 -Pan Am 747 Clipper Beacon Light June '84 JFK-FCO 5 hour mx owing to #3 engine problem and T storms. Upon landing at FCO the engines were reversed and #3 let out a huge bang with a sheet of orange flame shooting out.

Small, late to take off, cramped, poor air quality, loud, nothing fits in the storage bins...... the only good part was the flight attendent who kept smiling at me.

2 hours is bad, but there's much worse stuff on smaller aircraft. Some of the flights between JAX and ORD I've been on have been just short of 3 hours. There's also a ATL-DEN route flown by UA on a CR7 that's about 3.5 hours.

Personally I've never really enjoyed flying any of NW's older aircraft, i.e. the DC-9, etc.

I was very uncertain before boarding a TU134A of Aviogenix Back in 1981. This was a weekly holiday charter flight from Nottingham East Midlands to Pula in the then Yugoslavia.

Overall, I was just glad to get on the ground from both legs as the aircraft looked shabby and I was not confident of its service standards. Also noted on boarding that the tyres had seen better days which made me even more alert when landing. Inside it seemed like i was stepping back in time, totally in need of a spruce up.

For me it would be an Air Transat flight from YVR-PVR r/t. The aircraft was a A332 both ways, which on the outside was a beautiful aircraft, but on the inside was a different story. Seat pitch was horrible, and the seating was 9 abreast (3x3x3)! I later found out that TS crams 363 people in there. The seats were also rock solid, and ageing, with lots of stains etc. On the plus side, the aircraft was meticulously clean...

Egypt Air's A300's. The interiors were old, the cabin was filled with cigarette smoke. On all 4 sectors that I flew with MS on A300's, the toilets were indescribably dirty and stinking.

Origin Pacific's ATR's from CHC-ZQN-CHC. What can I say, other than the fact that the planes were rattle-traps?

N350US, otherwise known as "Rivets" the 737.

I flew on her as US Airways Flight 250 ORF-PHL in May 2004. This was one of the bare-metal lap-joint-challenged US Airways 737-300 that was held together with thousands of additional rivets. Hence the "usairways.com" special bare-metal livery. N350US was also the plane that had one of the overhead bins held shut with a Band-Aid bandage! The interior was filthy, smelly and falling apart.

Here's a pic of her sister ship with the same skin problem, N573US:

Both of these tired old birds have since been put out of their misery. Both planes spent their entire lives essentially with the same airline (they were originally built for Piedmont).

In terms of comfort: Both of my Mesa CRJ-900 experiences win this, both in window seats. One was in a bulkhead 1A seat with limited legroom on a miniature LAS red-eye to COS, and the other was in a standard window seat PHX-MSP.
In terms of condition: An HP A320 PHX-MSP in September 2005. The aircraft itself was fine, but the IFE wasn't working and the unique A320 engine sound seemed amplified, probably due to the lack of IFE to listen to. Other than that, I haven't had anything worse than very creaky-sounding overhead bins that sound like they are going to collapse and fall on you... but I've never been on a plane in all-out bad shape so I've been lucky.
