Aircraft Generating Interest At Specific Airports

Mon Mar 27, 2006 5:24 pm

Here's what I mean. If one were at a large international airport, the new 380 would generate interest.

If one were at a mid-sized airport, an unscheduled landing of a 747 would generate interest.

If one were at a regional airport, the two daily 320's might generate interest.

If one were at a smaller regional airport, the daily regional jet might be a big deal.

(I remember when I worked at ACK/ Nantucket, the twice weekly CO 737 was a HUGE deal)!

I am still pretty darn excited! I will be out there April 1st and April 3rd (I believe for the MX) to see these birds on approach here  Smile

At NGO we are moved by any aircraft but when the new 747-oversized-cargo THANG starts coming in. That will be our excitment. I guess right now it would be the MD11s (2 per day) and 744s (only 3 or 4 a day)

At my old CWA...it was a special chartered 767. They flew it in (used whole runway), had to use borrowed ground equipment from MSP or Appleton or something like that, it went to the runway, a tug backed it up to the very edge, and then it took off with enough fuel to get it to MSP. It refueled in MSP and went on to its destination. It is the largest A/C to fly into CWA.

Other than that ... nothing. If we ever got DC9s back I guess the would be exciting.

Here in PHX the most exciting thing is the daily (actually I think it is 5xWeekly) BA 744 flight from LHR, plus unscheduled heavies, 707 variants, and for a while anything in new US colors, although these have become quite common over the past few months so they aren't that exciting anymore. Also of interest are the scheduled Hawaiian and Delta 767s that come through, but they aren't that exciting. Cargo heavies are common and nothing to get too excited about, although a FedEx MD-11 is still a neat sight.

Guess only thing that is exciting at MIA is going to be the A380 for first few months and AN-124s are always nice. Thats about it, we seen just about everything else daily, even DC-3s and AN-12s.

I think that this Air Livonia AN-28 @ FOR qualifies. Some 8900 km from its home base!!!

Global Peace's 747SP generated tons of interest when it landed (and stayed for about 6 months) at YQT last year. On approach, it flew directly over my parents house, and even though they're used to the noise, it startled them, and when they saw what it was (and how low it was) they were sure it was going to crash. They had a heck of a time deplaning the crew, as YQT has zero facilities to accomodate the 747. THe airstairs were apparently 8 feet too short.

here at BWI...The daily BA 763 is always a treat. Also, some A300s from FedEx and UPS, Icelandair 757 with winglets, a DC-10 or MD-11 from World Airways...

basically anything that gives a nice break from the parade of WNs

Here at SDF We get the occasional unscheduled widebody passenger aircraft. Normally the largest pax plane we see is a DL MD80. The only widebodies we ever get are UPS and FedEx. Even rarer: the once in a blue moon visit of a C-5 or An-124.

This was also a big deal here at MDT. The plane was here for some time being painted, I believe. I remember passing by the airport on the Pa Turnpike, and seeing this big white tail sticking up over the buildings. That was surely a cool sight to see.
Also, last January, when Penn State was in the Orange Bowl, we had a parade of charters in and out all day. Besides the WN charters, there was a couple of 727's from Pan Am (Boston Maine). But the most exciting had to be the UA 767! So excitiing in fact, that UA had to send a mx guy from Dulles, with a tow bar, because MDT didn't have one to push back a 767!
Of course, there was also Air Force One, a couple of times, during the election. Awesome to see the E4 doing touch and go!

My glass is neither 1/2 empty nor 1/2 full, rather, the glass itself is twice as big as it should be.
