What To Expect In DTW.

Sat Apr 01, 2006 12:38 pm

Hello fellow a.netters I am flying NW flight 427 MCO-DTW and I have about an hour in DTW im connecting but in the same terminal and I was wondering is there only DC-9's in terminal EM or other a/c? Also will this be a good area for spotting. BTW, this is my first flight on NW and to DTW.

Cheers,

Big windows so you can see all there is to see.

All Northwest mainline aircraft are in Concourse A, the DC-9's, A319's, and A320's park on the back side, which doesnt have as much room, and the 757's, 747's, and A330's are all parked on the other side, which also allows you to see Concourses B and C. B and C house the Airlink flights, Continental, and Delta.

DTW is just great IMO! I think you will find an one hour transfer too short in order to enjoy the terminal. Keep in mind that an 1 hour transfer is actually only 30 minutes, since boarding starts about 30 min before departure.
DTW is very clean, easy to find your way around, nice large windows to spot aircraft, a couple of nice shops/restaurants. I have been at DTW a couple of times and for me it's the best airport in the US, followed by MSP.
(airports I've been to -to compare with- in the US: JFK, EWR, CLE, ORD, MDW, MKE, MEM, MSP, DTW, LAX, SFO, IAH, SAN, DFW, MCO, MIA, SEA, IAD, ATL, LAS, PHX, SAT, SDF, FLG, PSP, maybe a few others but this is what I can remember right now.)

They are big windows but they have those annoying little dots on them to help with sun glare. You don't notice them from far away but if you get close and try to take a picture it won't come out that good.

The McNamara terminal is quite nice. Don't waste your time with the train unless you have to go from one end to the other. The moving sidewalks will get you through quick enough.

Ride the tram and note the birds parked...the nines are mostly at the uneven numbered gates on the A. Might see an ARJ parked in there too, usually in the higher numbered gates 45-73.
The heavy metal is on the even numbered gate side.

What time do you get to DTW? IIRC the 747s bound for Asia will be there in the late morning to noon hours. The A330s and DC-10s to Europe will be there in the late afternoon and early evening.

Yup, I agree: Great clean airy aiport, with large window panes. But also agree with:

When I arrive in DTW in June it appears I've got till 9pm till I'm picked up. I arrive just before 9am on UA. Are you able to walk the full length of the airport grounds? Any good outside viewing spots?

It's not that hard to focus the dots out.

Well the NW terminal is completely seperate from where UA parks. NW has its own terminal, that it shares with Delta, Continental, British Airways, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian, and Air France. You could walk to the other terminal, but you wont be able to get inside the NW terminal unless you have a NW, CO, DL, LH, BA, Royal Jordanian, or AF ticket. As far as where UA is, its not a very big area. Spotting from what I have seen is limited to the parking garage near the Midfield (NW) terminal.

There should at least be the late flight to NRT sitting right smack dab in the middle of the A Concourse at that time. IIRC it leaves around 1330 or so.
