I've only been on DC-10s with American & Western. Never been on an Tristar in my life, which is a pity because I've always appreciated her fine lines. So I guess I'm partial to the DC-10 then. Regards.

From a passenger seat comfort point of view I don't really even know how to compare them. IIRC they were both configured 9 abreast in economy so any difference in comfort would be down to the airline, not the manufacturer.

However I understand that the placement of the L1011's number 2 engine at the back of the fuselage created some noise and vibration problems in the early L1011s, which I believe led to the installation of the frisbee fairings.

I'd personally rather fly on an L1011 any day. DC-10's had their share of mechanical problems back in the day and the engineering on the L1011 is just too cool.

L1011. Haven't flown on the DC-10. The L1011 is better looking anyways

That's a tough one! Both are beautiful birds, and I love them! I have been on both types (DC10 with LH, DE, NW, UA, and L1011 with AC and TS). Can't really think of a difference in comfort. I suppose it mostly depends on airlines, i.e. seat pitch, what kind of seats, etc. I'd prefer the L1011 at the moment, but only for teh reason that I had more flights on the DC10, and the L1011 is a bit more rare now...
Funnily, never been on the MD11  Sad

DC10 - only because my first transatlantic flight was on the Laker Skytrain from LGW-JFK.

The fare was only £59 (about $102) It never appeared on my credit card statement so it turned out to be a free flight!

For the most part when the DC-10 and L-1011 started service they were eight across seating. (UA, AA, DL, TW) . Some of the airlines like Laker and World had ten across seating. The nine across seating didn't become the norm until the mid 80's.
Now back to the question, the PA L-1011 was my all time favorite, with the DL L-1011 right behind (eight across seating). When they became nine across both just became another uncomfortable plane.

No comparison. Ever seen a 1011 drop an engine? Loose ALL hydraulic control? Have a cargo door blow off and collapse the deck? The 1011 has more secondary back up systems and can anyone cite an incident where the design of the 1011 itself was to blame?

10's are noisy. They sound like a wood chipper taking off. The cabin flex's so much on take off that it's not unusual for overheads to pop open. I've seen mid-ship bulkheads bang against the walls on T.O. And why do they always seem to fly uphill?

Mechanics have called them "Death's a Comin" and DC-10 Deathliner. That should be a clue.

Just my unbiased opinion.

Tom! Good to see you!  wave

The Tristar by far is my choice! I flew it often because my dad worked for EAL and it was quiet, comfortable and so nice! I sat in my car near one of TW Tristars at IGM this past winter for hours, sad to see it in that shape but still a great bird.

Having worked on both aircraft as cabin crew, I can honestly say that I prefer the DC10 over the L1011 any day. The over head bins on the L10 were atrocius and dangerous in design. The lav set up (we got our ac from ANA) was bad too with 5 lavs in the back and none up in the mid cabin. So the line up to use the LOO after the meal service was sometimes 20 deep. When we recieved the DC10s from AA...it was a step up at least from a flight attendant perspective. Our regular passengers seem to like the change also.

I flew a DC10 (Airtours) from Manchester to Orlando, (Northwest) DC10 from M/St.Pauls to LA and L1011 (Eastern) from JFK to Orlando. It's definately L1011 for me and technology wise it was a winner too.

ive flown the L1011 with TS and TW and the DC10 with NW. I personally like the L1011 way better. I think it was a better layout, more quiet (Not that it was), and its waaaay sexier. I also think the elevator in the L1011 is cool.

I only flew LH DC10s. Never been on a Tristar. But I loved the DC10 so think the Tristar didn`t have chance anyway...
Regarding the elevator: Condor had those as well on their DC10s. Funny idea.

Definitely agree with you. My experience on Delta and TWA Tristars beats any DC-10 I ever flew on. I was on a TWA Tristar with a feathered engine and an unexpected landing in Kansas City, which I know can be pretty common, but she handled like a dream. Wouldn't have even noticed anything if the Captain hadn't made an announcement. Sorry to see the old girl out of the aviation picture.

I've been on a couple DL L-1011s and many NW DC-10s, and to me the difference has more to do with the airline, and even the route, than the plane manufacturer. The interiors are similar, as I recall. The Delta flights were quite a while ago and I don't remember much of the details.

Don't you feel guilty about that? I mean, the flight was so cheap to begin with, yet you didn't take action when you saw that the fare was never charged?

I can only guess what you are referring to as an elevator are the galley lifts? All the long bodied L-1011's were built with the galley below the main cabin floor. This feature was an option on the DC-10. The lifts were the only access to the galley when the aircraft was in flight. Having the galley off the main cabin floor freed up space for additional seats and allow the galley attendants to do their work without being interrupted by the passengers.

I have flown on both the L1011 and the DC10. My first flight was on an AC L1011. Since than I have always loved the L1011's and they are definitely my favorite by far.

I have to be honest though, I have no reason not to like to DC10 as the 2 flights I had were fantastic. Both times the flights were with Wardair, who's in flight service was always a step above most airlines. With that said I still love the L1011.

I've flown both, the DC-10-30 for the last time in 1996 and my one and only flight on a Tristar was on new year's day 2004 on a TS -150 model (C-FTNG).

Its hard to compare passenger comfort, because the DC-10s in CP service was extremely comfortable and had spacious seating even in Y. IIRC the seating was for around 235 pax which was quite low compared to other operators. There were huge windows and the aircraft was not all that noisy (other than at takeoff). Even at the rear of the aircraft it was not all that noisy.

The TS L1011 on the other hand was on its last legs (to be retired a few months later) and was over 30 years old at the time - I purposley booked that flight MCO-YYZ because I knew it would be the one and only chance to fly on a Tristar. The aircraft was packed with 360+ seats, and 10 abreast seating (as opposed to the usual 9 across). Although the seats were narrow, there was still fairly good seat pitch, which was very surprising. This was an early model that did not have the centre overhead bins installed, which was not much of a problem for vacation flights such as those flown by TS. This gave the cabin an incredibly spacious feeling. The lavs also seemed huge, espescially compared to the A330-300 that we flew down to MCO on. However, the rear of the cabin was very noisy, you could hear the centre engine very clearly.

Still though, I like the buzzsaw sound of the GE CF-6 series engines at takeoff thrust better than the noise of the RB211s on the L1011. It may be a silly evaluating category, but that makes the DC-10 the favourite for me  Smile

Unfortunately never been on a Tri-Star, always wanted to though. Been on a DC-10 in 1998 when I was 8 so I dont remember an awful lot as I wasnt into aircraft as much then, I even got our DC-10 mixed up with a tri-star! Shows how much I knew!

The bird Ive been luck enough to travel on.

But looks wise I think I prefer the L1011, it was a tough decision but the L1011 has such a unique shape.
