IMHO, LAX because you can go to the restaurant or TBIT food court for full panoramic views of the airport. All arrivals can be seen by walking on roadway.

Well I've never had encounters with cops at SJC so I can say they are extremely spotter friendly I get a few brushes of cops at AUS but they are just wondering why I keep using binoculars and a camera... Also DFW is spotter friendly at founders plaza but most the pilots arent they just keep staring away from the people... So yeah... 3 major places I usually spot at SJC has the best IMO.

Miami, was a good one i saw, and lots of large aircraft, but there is that renissance hoel at heathrow which must be amazing, and if runway 23 is up fedex hill at YYZ is pretty good, with extra security though i would stay away from US airports.

In the states LAX and LAS I would think. Both get you right up close to the action and the police don't feel the need to harass you for no reason.

I think LHR has to be by far the best spotting airport! You cant bloody stand on the sidewalk without being shooed off!

With that being said, YYZ is extremely spotter-friendly.

But, when you think about it, this topic is kinda misleading because there is surely some hick farm in south-western US that has not been used for a few years and you can basically walk on the runway, so those ones would be the most spotter-friendly!  wink

Cheers

Yes but places like LAX which kind of promote spotting at places like Imperial Hill with the benches and free binoculars looking at the airport. Also In and Out cops never bother you.... other places I would say to remain away.

I would agree with the MFE overflow parking lot. I got a great picture of the sun setting over an American MD-80. (My wife erased it!!!!!!!!!!!) Good close ups of TWA, Northwest Airlink, Allegiant and some charters out of gate 3. You could sometimes get a nice close up of a Continental 757 at gate 1 at night. My wife and children went on a trip in June and after they pushed back and turned, My 3 year old looked out the window and could see me waving no more than 75 to 100 feet away. I went there for years until I moved last July.

Now I have found some great places in SAT. My backyard is one of them. They are low enough after take-off that my wife can read the names of the airlines on the sides of the plane. (She does not know much about aircraft either.)

My brother took me to Lee Rd. at IAH last summer also. It was great.

MSP has an observation deck. You pretty much only get a view of the runway on the northside. It is nice when it is not crowded. It gets pretty warm in the summer.

DFW has places all over. Grapevine Mills Mall is nice, your wife can shop and you can spot.

How is DCA? I was in the washington area recently, there is a park that faces the airport, so a lot of planes departing, and lot of people had lawn chairs watching the aircraft. when i was there though, the airport seemed to shut down for about 20 minutes, a chopper came, circled the airport twice and then traffic resumed. wished i had a radio on me..

I would have to agree with GVA and ZRH - the Swiss are soooo friendly to spotters and the ZRH airport tour which stops at the intersection of two of the runways was awesome (especially with a SWR MD11 rotating right in front of you on a bright sunny August day!)!!!

Other airports with observation facilities where I've had no problems incl:
BKK, SIN, KUL, AKL, MAN, BHX

Airports where I have had run ins with the authorities incl:
ACE, CDG (the french photography problem!), VIE and SFO but I think SFO, VIE and ACE were more to do with where I was stood more than anything

MIA is very spotter friendly. The airlines are very diverse, the action is nearly non-stop and the area to the NW of the airport with the holes in the fence encourage photography. FLL is very spotter friendly, too!

I'd say LHR. It's the only airport outside Iceland that I have tried to spot.  Smile

My RKV is also pretty good, no runway is blocked, it's very easy to spot here.

Only if you hang around the fences where they have signes which say you shouldn't be in this area. The beach is fine and police doesn't care at all.

I would think about Zurich and Amsterdam first. Both have awesome spotting location and facilities. LHR is quite nice too, mainly for its traffic.

I find LAX to be really nice as well with the Imperial Hill and the In N Out Burger location.

I have yet to go to Manchester. I've heard excellent comments about spotting at this airport.

Cheers,

Alex

Still there, in Terminal 1 (the older part) one floor above the check-in area. It's at the southern end of the terminal buildings overlooking gates which are mostly used by Thai Airways. Good photos are possible of planes taxiing to runway 21R, or landing on it.
By the way, the Royal Thai Air Force Museum on the eastern side of Don Muang is very interesting too. A huge collection of aircraft, and admission is free.

There are no viewing opportunities at LHR, not official ones anyway. There are plenty around the perimeter, but you can be asked to move from most of them.

I was there yesterday for the Venezuelan AF A319. I stayed on the T2 car park, 4th level. Though its unofficial, I was not chased off until the EL AL B777 was due to leave. More to do with EL AL security.

Does anyone know anything about the BAA starting a scheme so spotters / photographers will be given recognition and authority to be on BAA property? This was mentioned to me by a security guard at LHR yesterday.
Its about the airlines and the planes they fly
